View Full Version : Most Overrated Sport

I gotta say baseball is the most grossly over rated sport. The world series is worth watching but seriously, do we need 162 regular season games? At least in the playoffs every pitch means something. Baseball isnt' really much of a team game. It's a guy throwing a ball and a guy hitting it back, and a bunch of other guys trying to catch the ball. Where's the teamwork?

I'd also say, since it's on ESPN, bowling and the spelling bee are terrible sports. They're not even sports. Same goes with Texas Holdem. I am interested in what you guys think are over rated sports.

I used to feel that way about baseball but I have been appreciating it a lot more recently cause I have been watching it all the time.

It definitely comes nowhere near football in terms of awesomeness, but it's sexy in its own way.

Loose Cannon
06-14-2006, 03:49 PM
lol, how does baseball have no teamwork?

Defense is all about teamwork. You couldn't throw a guy out at the plate from right field if there was no right fielder, catcher or maybe cut off man, could you? That would be teamwork right?

You couldn't hit and run if there was no hitter and runner on base, could you? Teamwork?

The pitcher and catcher work together through the entire game.

Come on

ct2k

no teamwork? Thats nearly as ludicrous when someone i know said it was a game without tactics!

Anyway, Ice Hockey, its fun to watch the fights, but seriously i spend all the game like WHERE DA PUCK BRU?!

Yeah. I'm seriously sick of this fad. It's fun to play, but I don't need it taking up two hours of ESPN, two more hours of ESPN2, and two more hours on FOX Sports per day that could be devoted to things that require actual physical exertion.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous to say there's no teamwork in Baseball. The guys on base can get 4 guys out in one play, which could ultimately (and most probably) decide a game. It's all about quick thinking, timing, skill and communication.

I would have to go with NBA basketball. It gets so much coverage, but the games are about 1/4 as intense as college games. Like Icon said, there is no heart anymore.

As for baseball, I wouldn't say it is overrated at all, because I don't rate it highly, if that makes sense. Baseball, to me, is like a constant of the summer. I mean I go to maybe five games per summer, but it is always there and it is so easy to follow. The reason I mean it's not overrated, it's not hyped up as much as other sports. You go to a baseball game and it is a casual night, you go to any other sport and it takes your whole night. So basically, I think baseball is big because it is always there when you want something to do, it is incredibly easy to follow without spending your life reading about it, and basically just because it is a pasttime.

I don't really get your points about baseball BCWWF, but I do agree I don't personally hype baseball up so I don't really think its overrated.

I love football personally, every game counts so much because there is only a 16 game season. Much more intense for me.

I don't really think sports can be overrated, some people will like it while others won't you know, so if someone doesn't think too highly of the NBA from square one, how can it be overrated?

I just mean that I don't think baseball is overrated at all because it isn't shoved in your face like the NFL is. A baseball game doesn't dictate what you do all day, it is just there. There are a lot of shows on it, but if you miss a game or a Baseball Tonight, you don't really miss much. I just look at baseball more as a constant of life rather than a big, overhyped sporting event.

I hate it when people badmouth AFL they always crap on thats its not world wide and noone outside australia follows it. Who gives a shit.

I have no problem with people liking AFL solely. Ok soccer isn't your cup of tea, fair enough. What I DO have a problem with are the following people:

- Those that follow AFL and constantly bag the shit out of soccer for no reason. By this I mean Kevin Sheedy and co who just hang shit on the sport. Why? What the fuck has soccer done to you? They claim it will never catch AFL, well if it never will then why keep harping on about it?

- Those that bag soccer and have jumped on the bandwagon to cash in on the popularity (Footy Show). I know Eddie McGuire is a big Celtic fan, but the rest of them - what the fuck? These people are like Kevin Sheedy with blatant attacks on the game for NO reason, yet go to fucking Germany to do a show! Do you see SBS take their Sunday afternoon The World Game panel to the G for the AFL Grand Final? No!

- Those that CONSTANTLY compare AFL to soccer, be it deliberately or accidently. By that I mean pricks who go "ohhh 50 metres!" whenever someone is fouled, or calling the referees umpires or whatever. IT'S A DIFFERENT FUCKING SPORT, GET OVER IT IT IS NOT AFL. IF YOU DONT LIKE THE NAMES AND RULES OF THIS SPORT DONT FUCKING WATCH IT!

I will say it again, I have NO problem with people who like AFL and don't like soccer but never bag it. But if wankers want to hang shit on soccer unnecessarily then be prepared for AFL to cop it and for dickheads wanting to be smartarses to cop it like Sam Newman did in Germany. And speaking to a few of my AFL + soccer-loving mates ALL of them agree with me that the AFL and AFL people are full of shit in this situation and they should just leave soccer alone.

I was a big footy fan as a kid because I got more exposure to than I did to soccer, and my old man used to like going to AFL instead of soccer. But once I started going to soccer live, I grew more and more interested and my interest in AFL dropped off significantly. Since becoming more and more involved in my club I have seen first hand the blatant racism and prejudice against soccer by not only media and AFL but also the general public. So as a result I have grown very against AFL.

I'm more than happy to have a healthy debate about this subject but I'm not going to answer back in this thread to bullshit posts intended to shit stir (which is what I will 1000% cop back from Y2C).

By the way the above isn't directed at you P.C it's more of a general post.

It's one thing to have new supporters to the game, but it's another to have bandwagon. Nah you see it everywhere. I'm surprised you don't hear it much from the area you come from but yeah here I heard it heaps in the qualifiers against Uruguay in 2001 and 2005 and the Greece game last month. I am of course like every other sports fan. I dont like it when opposition suppporters give my team shit and usaully I dont get too angry when they do it (except sometimes for Geelong and Essendon fans) but I do get angry when Melbourne supporters try and give us Hawks shit (I say try because usally they have shitty points like you have just pointed out). Why you may ask why I get angry at Melbourne Supporters.

Its because Melbourne have been the only club in Australian professional sport history (and may as well the world for all I know) to have been weak, idiotic and soft enough to VOTE THEIR OWN CLUB OUT OF EXISTENCE. Yes Melbourne are that soft. And don’t bitch about money troubles or whatever because Hawthorn and clubs like Fitzroy had it way worse and even then their supporters didn’t give up on their original club. And yes I know it was called the Melbourne Hawks but it was still not your original club.

Not that NFL football isn't good, but it's so hyped that a person cannot consider it the most overated sport.

Massive ROFL

A majority of the Melbourne members didn't even get to vote on that fateful night, as they were locked out of the venue. It's a true story and if you don't believe me then read Joe Gutnick's book.

The only people who voted for the merger were Ian Ridley & all his cronies - if the members really believed that they wanted to merge then they wouldn't have kicked his arse out the door - and those who knew that it would have been a take over anyways. It would have been MFC + Dunstall & Crawford and we would have kept 95% of the jumper.

It wasnt just Ian Ridley and his cronies I have seen the numbers and the votes for pro merger where into thier thousands as where the anti-merger. It included a large number of the members. I can understand that a MINORITY may have been locked out but the sheer numbers involved in the vote suggested a large number.

And yeah the merger would have been more melbourne based than Hawthorn The jumper was preety much MFC but the base of the club was going to Glenfeirre (oh yeah does the demons have a training ground yet) and the team was going to be 50/50 not just crawf and Dunstall as both teams where as bad as each other back then (if I remember correctilly I think the demons finished last that year and hawthorn 12th or 13th). And it dosnt matter if it was a takeover or not mfc supporters are still and always will be piss weak soft cocks who will fuck off to the snow when the going gets tough. Even your beloved Gary Lyon said this last year (although not in those words)

The amount of people locked out were in the thousands. Given that it was about 53% who voted in favour of the merger then I'm sure that it would have made a difference.

Melbourne has training facilities at the Lexus Centre, as well as the Ground down at Sandy.

Hawthorn supporters have been much softer than Melbourne supporters in the past. Didn't you guys get about 9,000 to a game against Freo (or it mighta been Port) at the MCG a few years ago? Your team also sells more home games than us per year. Although I didn't hear Lyon's comments last year, they may have been toungue in cheek as we were actually able to score sponsorship off Bula last year for the start of the snow season.

I doubt that but even if that true you still have a shitload of supporters that wanted you to merge.

Before this year you had to change grounds every few months because you could get a lease on anything. Dosnt Collingwood own the Lexus Centre.
You might not think its a big deal but it is. It means despite being the oldest afl club you have no culture. You are like the freo of Melbourne clubs.

It was something like 15,000 to 18,000 (aganst port btw). Fair enough too the hawthorn supporters and members (me included ) where fed up with the direction the club was going. We where bottom on the ladder after being talked up as flag favorites, Schwab was still coach at that stage, they where playing the same shit players and the same game plan. We where sending a message to the adminstration that we where not happy by the only way that would hurt though money.

Lyon has always been critcal of mfc supporters (if you can call them supporters). He has writen constant articles about this, he even said that when he was playing for the demons him and the players didnt think they had the total support of the fans.

And I dont think a melbourne supporter should call another clubs supporters soft. Melbourne is well known for having the softest supporters in the league

Collingwood doesn't own the Lexus Centre. I doubt that it's officially called that; that's just the name that Collingwood use.

11682 was the official figure vs Port in Rd 16 2004, that's the lowest that the MCG has had for a home & away game in ages. I'm not saying that there aren't alot of soft supporters of the MFC; our main problem is that there are about 20,000 MCC members who aren't MFC members, and that hurts the club dearly. Last year for the first 16 or so rounds we had the second greatest home-game attendences in the AFL.

And it was Schwab who claimed at the start of the season that Hawthorn would win the flag, after in 2003 Hawthorn won a few junk games at the end of the year when the season was already well & truly over.
