View Full Version : Dead Rising

From Capcom, this is another take on the zombie genre of games.

Basically, the premise is that you're trapped in a shopping mall/town as a freelance photographer. The town is infested by zombies, and you can use anything or everything against them (from ball bats to beating them with teddy bears). In certain parts of the game, you can either rescue civilians in trouble, or take pictures of them as they get maimed and eaten, netting points to use for special unlockables.

Anyone else really pumped about this? August 8. Can't wait.

Yeah, looks cool athough as far as I know it's still Xbox360 only.

They could do a Shawn of the Dead game in the mold of Dead Rising. Just replace the mall with a small section of London.

Oh gods yes! Who with a 360 isn't anticipating Dead Rising? This game is so going to own, or atleast it better  ! The 360 titles for the most part have not been as on par as hoped so Dead Rising better help make up for it! Plus it has zombies, come on, who doesn't love cute cuddley zombies? No one I say.

I really beileve it would be a great game to play but I don't have a 360 and I don't plan to ever have one, so unless it comes out on another console, I doubt I'll actually play it.

Lol, I looked at another vid of Dead Rising and at the end the guy has a golf club and he hit a golf ball and you see a zombie on a balconey fall over (after getting hit by the ball). Mildly amusing since I'm really tired but can't sleep.

WHAT!? You don't plan on getting a 360? don't tell me you're waiting on the 'greatness' that will be the PS3... I'm sorry but I'd have to ask you back for that good rep I just gave you. ;)

Drakul

nah, Ps3 seems a little too expensive and if I get anything it would be a Wii.
I can't really say I see anything interesting about 360. :p

360 is the goods but yeah PS3 is going to be expensive but that is the least of it's problems and yeah the Wii looks awesome.

Drakul

Got to admit I orgionally wanted the Ps3 but since the prices is so over the top and at E3 I saw nothing on Ps3 that looked good. Wii, got me excited though. I'm starting to think the PSone and 2 where maybe just "Begginers Luck" for Sony.
The way they ripped of the Wii-mote motion thing was sad -_-

btw heres a random vid of Sony contradicting themselves at E3.

I agree. I downloaded the trailer off Xbox live the day it was there and love it. Looks like its a take of GTA with zombies. I read that its time based where you can go around getting everything in the game or you can wait at the start till help arrives.

Not gonna lie. It looks incredibly repetetive and boring after the first hour or so. From what I've seen in commercials and demo videos, it looks like they're just marketing it as a kill-fest with no real depth.

DS
08-09-2006, 12:18 AM
I kind of got that feeling too. I think it would be fun for a while but then I can just see it getting really boring and never touching it again. I probably won't get a 360 anytime soon so I probably won't ever get a chance to play this but it could be fun for a little.

Kane Knight

Does it use the crappy RE control scheme?

UmbrellaCorporation
08-09-2006, 03:12 PM
Oh, nah (thankfully).

The ONLY problem I have is that each profile is only allotted ONE save file. So if you're just screwing around the mall cutting down zombies, and you miss a storyline case, the trail goes cold, and you can do NOTHING else, but restart the game. Interestingly enough, if this happens, you can restart WITH your current levels/moves/abilities intact.

But there's also an Overtime/Infinity mode. Overtime adds another day to the story, and Infinity is a survival mode to see how long you can last.

This game is bliss to me.

Kane Knight
08-09-2006, 09:11 PM
Sounds good. I'm probably getting a 360 when I have cash, so I'll doubtless check it out. Got some interviews coming up, and if I get a job, I'ma layaway a 360 and a couple of games. Not sure what yet, though.

It's called "Justified" by a band called Drea, but I can't find it ANYWHERE. Anyone who knows any way to get this gets like 25,000 rep right now, seriously.

The ending of this game was pretty awesome, imo. Not to mention the addition of the extra modes, and the Infinity mode. Would've been a lot better if Infinite mode WAS infinite, and your health didn't drain for no reason all the time. If this game had a REAL free roam experience after beating it, it'd be unstoppable.

Still well worth the price though.

Took me about 3 goes to do it and finally managed it, then I got eaten by a fucking zombie running back to the other side of the mall with Brad

Oh yeah, and the small text on my non-hdtv is fucking annoying to read, although I did hear they might release a download to sort it out :-\

UmbrellaCorporation
09-07-2006, 03:17 PM
Unfrtounately, Capcom has already said that they're not gonna release a patch or anything to fix the text size. :(

They said the game was meant to be played on a HDTV (which is bullshit, to be honest, even though I can see the text just fine on a 27" SDTV), and that if you switch your 360 settings to widescreen, it can help. But as far as patches go, they're not doing anything.

This game is killing some 360's though, since it uses all three of the cores inside it, whereas all the other 360 games only use two of them. Got a few Dirty Disc Errors already, and some loading errors. So I took it to Hastings, buffed it, and it's working fine now, but still. I love the 360, but the hardware is absolute shit.

Yeah. You basically have to dedicate a playthrough to doing NOTHING but killing zombies. And just running around killing them won't work.

I have a mapped out route through the maintenance tunnel in which I keep swapping cars, running over propane tanks, and getting like 1,000 kills every time I do it. And the REAL MEGA BUSTER is worth it, since it kills anything in like one shot, aside from psychopaths which take like two or three tops..

Been playing it again for the last couple of days and the most gayest thing ever happened. *SPOILERS AHOY, duh*

Just came off the second fight with Carlito, took a couple of goes to defeat him but done it. Followed the cases as they poped up and went on the medicene run for Brad. Defeated the supermarket manager and took the stuff back to the security room, well within time, and then it came up saying I missed something and the truth will now be forver hidden. I must have missed something, but obviously didn't know about it due to tiny text.

Anyway I was very annoyed and just decided to go on a murderous rampage, so far killed around 2,000 odd zombies. Still try and do the escort missions when they pop up, but now I just want the game to end and get my ass out of there.

Probably gonna try and look up the other endings on Youtube or something, cant be arsed going through it again.

But it's not a spin-off, per se, nor is it the probably-Vegas-bound (http://kotaku.com/5023576/dead-rising-2-set-in-vegas-) Dead Rising 2, it's...a Wii version. And a direct (well, as good as they can get it) port of the 360 original to boot. With zombie-wrestling waggle and everything. Before you ask why, ask yourself why not. It worked for Res 4, you can't blame Capcom for trying! Scans are after the jump if you're in a state of disbelief.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop will be coming to Wii this winter and it will use the same engine as Resident Evil 4 Wii.

The zombie game was originally released on Xbox in September 2006 but, according to Capcom, the Wii version wil provide a more intuitive and interactive experience as players use the Remote to aim and fire guns, swing and throw weapons and shake off zombie attacks. It also has an improved save function for more seamless gameplay.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, a freelance journalist looking for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a goood lead, he journeys to the small suburban town of Willamette only to find that it has become overrun by zombies.

Frank then escapes to the local shopping mall but he's not safe from the zombies for long. What follows is a struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies. Playing as Frank, you'll have use the goods of the the shopping centre's stores to your advantage. You can fight off the zombies with makeshift weapons such as golf clubs, lawnmowers and frying pans. Also, if you're running low on health you can restore energy by grabbing something to eat in a restaurant or cafe.

The game is split into a series of individual cases, all of which Frank must complete in order to gain vital information that will allow him to piece together the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. In addition to the cases, you'll also have to decide the rescue priority of the residents of Wilamette who also sought sanctuary in the mall.

If you're not skilled enough some residents might not survive as each rescue needs to be undertaken in a set time period, meaning you'll need to choose to save a fellow human and put off the completion of a case.

I bought the latest issue of ONM on Friday and, as well as getting a full pack of Mario themed playing cards  there was a few pages on Dead Rising.

Some useful info:
-There will, apparantly, be "over 100 zombies on screen at any one time" or at least, thats the goal Capcom are gong for with the Wii version.
-There will be a new save feature that allows you to have multiple saves instead of the originals single save.
-The game will be split into episodes to make distinguishing between main missions and sub-missions easier.
- New enemies
- Overtime mode, an unlockable in the original, will be "packaged as standard" which I assume means it's unlocked from the start.

Obviously, there are a few Wii exclusive controls. ONM only detail 5 of them in the preview saying there are others but Capcoms keeping them under wraps. The motion controls are based on the ones found in RE4 on the Wii and the 5 shown in the magazine are:
- Shooting your gun works the same as it did in RE4:Wii Edition. Press the B trigger to aim and press A to fire.
- You swing the remote to use the baseball bat and you can charge it to have a maximum effect on crowds of zombies.
- You dodge attacks like in RE4:Wii by quickly moving the remote when the on-screen prompt appears.
- Shake the remote to knock zombies off of you.
- Make a downward slash motion to use the swords.

I don't know if things like the sword can only be swung downwards but it's the impression the magazine is giving. Although they could just be giving example of some of the remote controls because I wouldn't imagin you would be that restricted with a weapon. Surely we would get to swing the sword to the side like the bat.

That's pretty much all the Wii exclusive stuff mentioned in the preview. The rest was just the games backstory and so on.

Just found out that you, supposedly, wont be able to take photos in the Wii version.
The game is said to be played with a camera like Re4:Wii (even though the screens above, clearly aren't) and for some reason, that made them decide not to put in the photography.I've read it in various places.
Why would they take that out when it was a big part of the game? I hope it isn't out because I was looking forward to taking snaps of whatever cool things I come across. I'm betting it'll be a web forum rumour or a mis-traslated/out of context quote from Capcom.

BTW, it's said to be released Q1 2009 in the US.

There won't be photography in the Wii version. Confirmed by Nintendo Power during an interview with game producer.

If it has been taken out because of the in-game camera position, why can we still use the sniper rifle?
The only thing I can think of is the way the 360 version can tell what's in the photo and maybe the Wii can't do that. The news of this being cut has really brought down my anticipation for the game. I may end up getting a 360 for this after all.

Edit - Turns out the camera was cut to make the game "easier" and "more casual friendly".

I still think/hope it's just a bad translation of the interview.

I've asked the producer anyway on Capcoms Europe site. You can post questions in the Dead Rising forum and they will pick the best ones and answer them. I asked two questions based on stories and rumours I've heard online.

- Is it true the ability to photograph things has been removed? If so, why and how will this effect the games story and missions?

- In terms of freedom, will the Wii version be as open as the Xbox360 version? I've heard that certain shops will have barriers stopping the player entering.

Like I said before, I can't imagin them taking it out because the reason was something to do with the new RE4 style camera but we still have the sniper rifle as a weapon. So if we can switch cameras for the sniper rifle then why not the camera?

Nakai-san answered the 3 selected questions submitted by Capcom Europe community members.

thezombiemessia: Do you feel that the lack of power within the Wii will lessen the effect of the game overall? (thezombiemessia)
Nakai-san: Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop has been specifically tailored for the Wii and we think it will be just as fun, if not better. The new camera angle and control mechanic mean that the player will feel closer to the action and therefore even closer to the zombies! We have also made some changes to elements such as the save system and progression through the game that we feel we enhance the Dead Rising experience.

Drakul: Is it true that the ability to photograph things has been removed? If so, why and how will this affect the game’s story and missions?
Nakai-san: Yes it’s true that the camera function as been removed. This was due to the fact that the concept of taking photos didn’t go down too well with the new RE4 engine and the new camera view. However even without the actual snapshot function Frank is still very much of a journalist who fully intends to find out the truth behind this zombie outbreak.

Megaman: What is different in everything you could imagine from the 360 version?
Nakai-san: I couldn’t possibly tell you all about it in a go. From the moment you start playing you will know that it is DEADRISING but then again you will also notice something is very different. Foremost of all, the view system that uses the RE4 engine will be more focused on firearms and aiming using the Wii remote will sure to bring more sense of interactivity and involve you into the game rather than sitting back playing on the normal control pad. You will also see that everything has been brushed up, more sophisticated if you like, so you will enjoy the game even more at ease with improved over all systems.

Edit: First video http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/20852 so glad I'm getting the 360 for Dead Rising.
