View Full Version : How could WWE compete with the UFC?

It's a known fact that UFC is the realest out of the two. Even though wrestling is very real in it's own respect, it just doesn't compare
I've noticed that they announce the wrestlers when they are both in the ring, as opposed to announcing them as they walk to the ring (ie. Lillian Garcia announcing John Cena vs. RVD on RAW this past week)
I think the key is to get back to the basics. Gimmicks gimmicks and more gimmicks. I kinda wish Vince Russo was back. UFC could never pull of a 'Higher Power' angle. UFC could never pull off a 'gay marriage' angle. UFC could never pull off a 'Let's make a badass black panther stable' angle
WWE is trying to play UFC's game.
Instead, WWE should use what they already have and use the 'fake and scripted' concept to it's full potential. Everyone knows wrestling is fake, but WWE keeps trying it to make it look real (ie Tough Enough, [worked] shoots etc)

Why would WWE want to compete with the UFC? The 2 have nothing to do with each other. It would be like Nascar competing with Monster Trucks.

Yea they are 2 seperate entities. UFC will take over boxing if anything. Wrestling is stuck feuding with the likes of 'Dancing with the stars'

also the characters are terrible
I still can't get over the whole John Cena disaster. Sure he makes money, but he's like Ashlee Simpson or Britney Spears.
oh and off topic, i had a dream two nights ago that Madonna was my girlfriend.
okay, back to Cena. It's been said a million times on here, but IMO, I think Cena would have the same effect as Stone Cold if only he had more edge. We all know it's coming, but they're just milking it. It eventually happened with The Rock in 2003. Patience.
I also think CM has an awesome look. He should go to RAW though.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Triple H turns on Michales again and somehow get The Spirit Squad to be the new DX.

Thank you. I don't know why people are always lumping wrestling, MMA and/or boxing together. There are enough differences to put wrestling in it's own category.

The fact is, however, people do. Demographics lump them together, too.

i know what you mea, but it's like UFC can easily expose wrestling's weakness.
Especially for younger kids. Once thinking wrestling is cool, UFC is alot more edgier and 'cooler' than wrestling. UFC has the power to convert wrestling fans into something greater

i think UFC is the current version of what wrestling used to be
back then the marks thought wrestling was real. Now it's obviously 'fake' or 'phony'. Sure the true fans will stay, but whether you like it or not, wrestling is looked down upon
but these days, we all know UFC is fucking real. Not to mention the crazy mainstream popularity of it right now.

Ok, demographicly speaking the same people who like wrestling are going to like ufc. But that doesn't mean they are competing against each other. They are competing with each other in the same since that McDonalds is competing with Applebee's for where you are going to eat dinner, but they aren't directly competing with eachother.

That is because WWE is a marketing machine. What kind of merch does UFC have and what doesn't WWE sell. WWE is by far more profitable.

There is no comparison. UFC is in a league of it's own right now in terms of an entertaining product. A big reason why they are taking a lot of wrestling fans now is because UFC is similar to what pro wrestling should have evoled into in this day and WWE is nothing close. There is room for both to be sucessful but one has respect for it's audience and the other never has and never will.

Why should have WWE evolved into attempting to be a leigitmate sport. Any possibility of that went out the window 20 years ago. I really like BDC's analogy.

Not to mention one has the respect of its audience.
A lot of people watching wrestling these days do it out of habit, or because they're stupid enough to think that a real fan watches really bad programming. Or they want to "support" the program, see also stupidity.

They should have strayed away from the campier shit and got more legit. They started to do so by introducing MMA fighters. They started to change direction, and then Vince stopped taking his medicine.

That is a fair assessment, but I honestly think that it is impossible for WWE to ever be considered a"legitimate sport" by the masses.

I didn't mean becoming a legit sport. I meant WWE wrestling style should have looked more like MMA fights with submissions and suplexs/throws. Nothing wrong with say Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit or Taz kinda styles and you can still have light weight stuff and top rope moves but in this day, nobody wants the camp shit and nobody believes certain moves in matches.
Personally, I think that the top 20 pushed guys in WWE should all have a submission and pin finish (not a sleeper either). This would get over more submission moves and would stop the predictability of matches. I'm sick to death of watching a 15 minute match and waiting for a finisher. They need to go back to using small packages and sunset flip pins and stuff.
Also, WWE prided itself in the late 90's/early 00's with being in touch with their key demographics. They know absolutely nothing about current teenage culture today. They don't know what is cool and what's not and worse still, they have a bunch of over 40 year old men trying to tell the fans what is cool. I'm 25 years old and I barely know what's cool these days so how they hell can they know?

The problem is Vince and company have gone all PT Barnum and decided that they are trendsetters because of their previous success. It's a shame the anti-hero character in wrestling was only 20 years behind Wolverine, More'n a decade behind the Punisher, and behind even The Crow, or Vince might've actually been a pioneer in the anti-establishment field.
The problem is that they now think, this is what will sell, and this is what we're gonna give you, and it's not our fault if you're too stupid to like what you should.
The only difference being Barnum was a genius, and Vince thinks his ass is ratings.
The problem is that they now think, this is what will sell, and this is what we're gonna give you, and it's not our fault if you're too stupid to like what you should.
That's EXACTLY how it's like.

BTW, people can ask why you would compare the two, or why they would compete, but JR and King have made several allusions to UFC/MMA recently, and it's becoming very obvious that whatever you think, WWE sees them as competition or something very similar.

Chuck Liddel vs Mike Tyson UFC 62 "Invasion"
Unless Tyson hit Chuck with a right hook clean on the jaw in the opening 10 seconds, Chuck would win this in less than 2 minutes.
And it would never happen because Tyson wouldn't make 205lbs. Replace Chuck with Andrei Arlovski and I say it ends quicker.

Chuck Liddel is unstoppable, Cena finds ways to win.
So I would go with Cena in the last 10 seconds of the 5th round. Liddel would tap to the STFU with like 3 seconds left or something after being in it for like 3 mins.

1st round: Tito takes him down, dominated with ground n pound
2nd round: More of the same, ground n pound, couple takedowns and jabs to Cena
3rd round: Tito comes in, FU, STFU, Ortiz taps
