View Full Version : Biggest Chokes in Sports.

What are some that you can remember?
The biggest one for me is when the Yankees had Boston down 3-0 in the ALCS (I think it was the ALCS) and Boston won 4 straight to win the series.
Also an NFL game where the Oilers were up 35 - 3 at halftime and Frank Reich let the Bills to overtime and a field goal won it for Buffalo.

All Blacks World cup 99 v France in the Semis.
I think partly with the Yanks in 2004 we choked but tbh you can't underestimate the immense talent and gutsy performances of the Boston team, it was their time and they pulled their fingers out of their collective arse and did the undoable.

Ken Macha and Terrence Long for the 2003 ALDS. 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, Jermaine Dye up with Chris Singleton on deck in the 9th inning. It was OBVIOUS Lowe would walk Dye to face Singleton but for some reason Macha pinch-hits Adam Melhuse who Lowe wasn't afraid of and struck him out. Then Tina Long K's with the bases loaded 2 ABs later. Disgusting

Oilers didn't choke because they weren't expected to win.So if the Steelers ended up losing to the Colts in the playoffs last year after Bettis coughed up a sure win you wouldn't consider that a choke?
I would, they choked at the end of the game, I don't care if they were projected to lose before the game.

What the oilers did wasn't a choke, because
A) they weren't the over-whelemign favourites
B) they didn't have a big lead
c) they weren't really in a position to win other than game 7 where they got outplayed

I love how he went back the next year and played the hole just with a putter and got a 6, which would have won it for him too.

Oh well that makes sense but in an earlier post you made it seem like a team which is the underdog cannot choke in a game, which I don't think is entirely true.

The Kings letting T-Mac drop 13 pts in 48 seconds and losing a 10 pt lead was a big time choke in a regular season game. I also remember in 01 or 02 the Lakers coming back from the Mavs after being down by 35 in the 3rd quarter.

Buzz wrong, Boston was probably up 3-1, but not 3-0, only two teams have ever come back from 3-0 Toronto in the 40s and the Islanders in the 70s.
