View Full Version : So my PS2 has decided to stop reading the discs I put in there

So I have to make a decision. Do I have a local game dealer try to fix it, or do I just spend the 129.99 and get a new PS2?
They will give me 40 dollars towards a new one. I just don't want to purchase a new one, especially with PS3 right around the corner. I figure though that Final Fantasy 12 is coming out for the PS2 and it's rumored it will take over 70 hours to complete, without the side quests. So that could keep me busy until like March or so.

Do you get a disk read error? If so...clean the laser. Gamefaqs has a good guide on how to do so.

Buddy Im sorry to say I had the exact same problem with my ps2
If you want, find the sony customer service number on the owners manual/box
and call them and tell them what is wrong. I sent my PS2 to them it took a little over a week, but it came back working great, also though if your ps2 is in bad shape they may not fix it, but I did this and the total cost was only for shipping and handling at around 12 bucks canadian
also if you have the same problem, put a disc in if it makes a weird clicking sound, will play ps1 games and audio discs, but "clicks" when a ps2 disc is in there you have the same problem. Give sony a call, you might spend 30-45 minutes filling out info about the time you bought it, serial numbers etc but its worth it to get it fixed for less then $20
Good luck with that though.
any questions post here or message me

Long story short, do everything but buy a new one. It's too close to this generation's end.

I'm thinking of getting a dvd cleaner for mine...
anybody think this is a good idea?
If by DVD cleaner you mean like a lens cleaner DVD with the bristles, it's a good idea. That's what I used until I lost it and it worked almost perfectly.

Ditto. Not QUITE a launch console, but still. Close enough to launch to warrant this comment.
Occasional clicking, a heavy rumbling sound every now and then, but I've only ever had ONE disc read error and it was like a year ago. Worst comes to worse, I'll clean it, or even buy a new one (since I work at Hastings Entertainment now, discount FTW.), but so far so good. PS2 is still purring like a kitten. A kitten that doesn't give DREs.

MY Ps2 wont read discs with purple underside or Ps1 games and other random games :'( It's a wreck. It froze just as I headed to the exit on the 2nd level of the new Hitman  . Which is why I'm focusing on my gamecube right now.

If your PS2 clicks that isn't a good sign. That means their isn't enough lubricant on the two metal rods that allow the PS2's disc laser to shift. Some WD-40 does the trick though. I've had to do it once myself.
