and in all honesty i really enjoyed it more this time around. I basically ran through the entire thing and did little to no side quests. The first half of the game seems slow, but the second have is very emotional, particularly the end leg of the story (seeing Jecht in sin, when Yuna begins to send and Auron says to keep going, Tidus' disappearing, and the speech Yuna makes at the end).
I heard FFX-2 kinda killed the emotion of FFX though, and i have yet to play X-2, but i kinda wanna just to further the story, yknow?
Anyway, basically FFX= underated game.

Yes. I love FFX. No idea why it seems to get so much shit.

Ditto.

In my opinion, about 90% of that shit should be reserved for 9. Don't understand the appeal to that one at all. It's like they tried to capture the old school elements, and failed miserably. Opinion of course, but still. There was only one character in 9 that I even MODERATELY liked, and that was Kuja.

And for the record, I loved X-2 as well. It was different, but in a good way.

That FFX video made me sad again.

I remember that aside from Aeris's death, the lake hugging scene with Tidus and Yuna always got to me really bad, because it reminded me of this girl I've been friends with/had a thing for, for ages.

Yeah, pretty gay, to be honest, but it stands.

I liked X.

I liked IX.

I hated VIII.

VIII gets a lot of shit unfairly as well.

I agree with that too. I thought 8 was pretty fantastic, to be honest. The whole SeeD thing was the balls.

Then again, it's all personal preference, but I suppose (like I mentioned in the AC thread) that the characters are what make me so horribly interested in the FF games. Probably the main reason 9 didn't appeal to me, actually. The story wasn't bad at all in 9, to be honest (opinion again, of course). I just really, REALLY didn't give a damn about any of the party members.

Junctioning in VIII was the stupidest thing Final Fantasy has ever had. Materia and the Sphere Grid blow it out of the water.

I mean I beat it, but it wasn't as compelling. I didn't like their use of summons or Limit Breaks either.

Boomer

To better explain myself, it was so trial-and-error (as I remember it), how I had to constantly try different things in different slots to get the best affect. I felt like I was wasting my time.

UmbrellaCorporation
07-27-2006, 05:27 PM
Honestly, I didn't care for junctioning all that much either.

Or maybe I just got REALLY used to the materia thing from 7. Either way, I agree with that. It's one negative thing I can say about 8. I'm not saying it was BAD, but compared to the sphere grid and materia, it wasn't good either.

Boomer
07-27-2006, 05:31 PM
The Sphere grid only became a problem when I took a chance and sent Kimahri into the black magic section of the Grid. He just never got very far (for me) with what I did.

Materia was just nearly flawless though.

UmbrellaCorporation
07-27-2006, 05:32 PM
I don't remember ever getting him that far either, into black magic. Most of my efforts went into Tidus and Yuna. :D

I dunno if it's just me, but I even found the sphere grid easier to use than Materia, mainly because I didn't have to worry about HP/MP dropping when using Magic/Summon materias.

Boomer
07-27-2006, 05:38 PM
Having them drop is fair though. I'm playing FF2 right now and it is obvious that the magic people have always been at a disadvantage of not being able to take much physically. Materia has a sense of balance about it. If you want to stack someone with summons and magic, expect them to be weak otherwise.

Nah not really, the scene where Tidus meets Jecht in Sin got to me because he was able to see his father whom he thought had passed and was able to talk to him. When i played the game through the first time that didnt bother me, but since then my father has passed, so this time around i was into that scene big time.

That FFX video made me remember how bad the voice acting was, how clichéd the story was, and how this franchise really should have died a long time ago.

Boomer

Good luck ever stopping FF KK. I don't see it happening. XII is supposed to be really good, but the Japanese really do hype all of them anyone.

Kane Knight
07-27-2006, 08:15 PM
Why would I try and stop it? What place did you pull something that retarded out of?

"Should have died" =/= "I want to stop it."

Please, you're smarter than an infant.

...Or maybe not, if you're looking forward to FFXII.

Boomer
07-28-2006, 07:44 AM
Then why should it have died a long time ago? I'll give you the bad voice acting and cliche story in FFX (all I ever did was make fun of Kimahri, talking in 3rd person), but it was still an entertaining game. Most gaming franchises are stuck in the same types of characters and storylines. It's what the gamers want to see, and its the easiest thing to do. Otherwise all the FF male leads wouldn't be all blond hair blue eyes and spiky hair.

And yes, I am looking forward to XII. I've played the demo, and its pretty radically different. I'm not sure if I like the difference either, but it's different. And I applaud them for changing the formula.

And yes, KK, I obviously meant for you to get your signs out and start trying to boycott Final Fantasy to try and stop it.

I take it you did not beat the optional bosses then.

For shame.

Kane Knight

Then why should it have died a long time ago?

Because the games became formulaic and dumb? Any creativity that once lived within the concept died? And why is there even a "Then" there? You mean, if I don't want to try and kill it, then why did I think it should have died? Why are those two related? A statement that they should have stopped making them is different than a statement that I want to kill the series, and not wanting to kill the series should not lead to a question of conclusion.

Boomer

My whole comment about you "stopping FF" is complete sarcasm. I don't even care to argue with you. All I wanted to hear was the "formulaic and dumb" and the loss of creativity part, which I can completely understand.

i beat them the first time around, second time i really jus wanted to enjoy the story. Of course i still had to whoop Omega's ass though, i never pass that up. I didnt bother with the Magus Sisters though.

Underrated?

It sold several million copies and received tons of great review scores. Check GameFAQs.com, its still in their top 10 PS2 boards.

Its the polar opposite of underrated. If anything FFIX is underrated.

I think the J-RPG genre has become completely stagnant. I don't think that the FF franchise should die but it desperately needed some fresh ideas. FFXII apparently provides some of that. The fact that "hardcore" FF fans are already attacking it because of its changes makes me happier and more excited for it.

Read any video game message board and see how much people bitch about FFX.

They have good reason to.

But it still sold several million copies and received lots of high review scores. If that means "underrated" then I have completely misunderstood the meaning of the word.

anything with the name 'Final Fantasy' in it will sell. I dont judge a good game by sales (see Beyond Good & Evil). Underrated.

First of all every FF game from here on out, will live in the shadow of FF VII.

Kane Knight, this is what I don't get about you. You show yourself to be an intelligent individual. A master debator(stop giggling) in the disscussion forum. And you make great arguements in the wrestling forum. But every once in a while, you disagree with something so strongly, that any semblance of a valid arguement dissapears, and you are transformed into some terrible noob-like poster, whose only arguement is throwing irrelevant insults about, and generally acting like the wrestling forum jobbers which yo scathe with your sharp-witted homo-erotic cracks.

Instead of evaluating on your arguement, your making a paragraph disscussing grammar and the context of your previous post.

The fact is that the game consistently makes millions every year. But okay, the it has become "cliched and formulaic"? Oh, and "dumb". There's that great kk wit. They consistently try and overhaul the magic system. Even the battle system is being changed for twelve. I don't know about everyone else, but I would prefer they spend more time on the game than finding suitable actors to do voice acting. And as far as the stories go, no, the recent games havn't lived up to their successors, but a part of that has to do with what I mentioned earlier. The shadow of games like IV VI and VII, but these games on such a pedastal that it has been impossible to live up to the hype. But it's still better than 90% of the drivel out there.

I have tried to get into other rpg's. I can't. Because the story and characters don't pull me in like FF. Even the later ones.

So now, try calming yourself to thing of a proper and relevant rebuttal.

Like twelve Mlitznutz style decisions in there that he will most likely make note of, instead of a proper response.

:y: What i stopped doing a long time ago was expecting ANY FF game to be the same, and not really expecting them to overshadow FF VII, because as you said, they will all be in its shadow.
To say the Final Fantasy series is redundant in what it does is rediculous in my opinion. Every game there is a different magic system (as stated very well by Fignuts), a tweak in the battle system, etc.
Compare the FF series to a FPS, and tell me what is formalic. Compare FF to ANY genre of game, and tell me whats formalic. I think what makes the Final Fintasy series of games is, they are true RPGs that get you into the story. Every story is different.
TBH, GTA is formalic, FPS are formalic, racers, sports games. THOSE are formalic. And i just named almost all the top genres in games right there.

Fignuts

Yeah, seriously, have you played two consecutive madden games on the same system, back to back?

Formulaic isn't a bad thing either if the formula is good. Some people say the same thing about megaman. Complaining that the series should die. And yet every year, a slew of megaman games come out, each making a very good amount of money, and getting good reviews. Because each game has a great formula.
