A BIG NIGHT FOR BENOIT
Feb. 9, 2004
The Road to WrestleMania XX will make a historic stop next week when RAW comes to you for the first time from Portland, Oregon. And the Portland fans will be treated to a night to be remembered when the key players in the WrestleMania XX Main Event will be present. First, the contract for the World Heavyweight Championship Match between Triple H and Chris Benoit will be signed, making what could be an unforgettable match official. Last week, when Benoit and Triple H were briefly face to face, the situation seemed ready to explode. Will this week’s meeting for the contract signing remain orderly? Tune in to find out!
And Benoit’s night will not be over after signing the contract with Triple H. As announced on RAW last week, Benoit will face Triple H’s Evolution cohort Ric Flair one on one. To prepare for a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship, Benoit will face one of the greatest to ever enter the ring. Will Triple H be a factor in this match? Find out on RAW.
Also, last week, Chris Jericho and Christian were able to put aside some hostilities concerning Trish Stratus in order to challenge Flair & Batista for the World Tag Team Championship. However, Jericho & Christian ultimately lost their match. How will this duo react? Only one way to find out … watch RAW next week at 9/8 CT on Spike TV!
Not really a big fan of the whole contract signing thing.
Pretty predictable that Benoit will somehow get beat up, be made to sign his name in blood, ect.

Yeah, contract signings on TV are always REALLY stupid and never worth the TV time.
Which is why I'm surprised Vince hasn't moved 'em to PPVs...:shifty:

Knowing HHH, he wouldn't even sell that.
Think the contract thing is an angle to get Michaels involved
That's what I was thinking. I really hope not though. Michaels/HHH/Benoit as the main event of the biggest wrestling show in history doesn't seem fitting.
I'm kinda hoping for the pen-in-the-eye thing.

Well something is gonna happen. They aren't gonna just go out there, sign papers and walk off. And I don't see a big slop of action happening either.
Waiting for The Rock to show up and involve himself in the Foley feud. Maybe Benoit and HHH scuffle, Evolution runs out. But Foley and Shawn come out, get their ass kicked, then The Rock clears the ring. That's how I'd do it - plus that'd set up a good pre-Wrestlemania 4 on 4 tag match. Rock/Foley/Benoit/Michaels vs. Evolution. It'd own.

Now THAT's good writing!
Hype up your next brand-exclusive PPV by having the man "in charge" of it obliterated by the #3 contender for the OTHER brand's title. Keep a Wrestlemania storyline going by...injecting Austin. Build up the No Way Out main event by barely mentioning the #1 contender by name, instead concentrating on the fact that GOLDBERG will be there...WATCHING!
And shows were so good last week...

I can see BT/RVD vs Flair and Batista next week, maybe one of them turn on the other, or maybe when Rock shows up next week he helps cost them the tag titles. I got a feeling the match is going to be Orton/Batista/Flair vs RocknSock in a 3 on 2 match at Mania. That way Flair can do the JOB, and the kids get the rub.
RAW was really good this week, although I had some issues with logic, which I'll get to.
I liked how they managed to use RAW to sell the SD PPV in a somewhat logical manner. I mean with Vince being the czar of the WWE I guess he can do whatever he wants, but if he breaks any laws Austin gets to Stun him, but I'm sure Vince could just fire him, but then he would get reinstated by the BOD, at which point Austin can stun him, but then Bischoff could suspend him, but Austin could overrule that with a Stunner......ah who can keep up?
Anyway, I liked the Goldberg Spearing everyone deal, but I hope Austin doesn't get his revenge because I think they need Goldberg to look as strong as possible. Of course he still looked inept which is great for a face (note sarcasm again), but thats just WWE booking, you have to roll with the punches.
Actually, the way I see this all playing out is that Goldberg will face Lesnar at Mania (duh) and Austin will be added as the Guest Enforcer. What I was thinking is that Lesnar should win (duh again), and then after the match Austin has a beer with Goldberg, and at that point he can give him a Stunner to send him packing from the WWE (also getting his receipt for the Spear).
Jericho-Christian-Trish stuff moved along, storyline is solid, and Christian is emerging as one of the big time stars on RAW.
Flair-Benoit was pretty good, good old school booking, and of course Benoit goes over clean, which was the only sensible finish.
I liked Hunter's promo. Some people may not like the ego stroking in the promo about him being the real champion and blah blah blah, but the way I see it that actually makes sense. In the old WCW-WWF days, a WCW champ would go out of his way to bury the WWF champ and vice versa, so the same should happen here. The fans are smart enough to decide whether Hunter is telling the truth when he speaks.
Here's where the logic gets thrown out the window. So, all it takes to get in a contract is to sign it? I tell you what I'm going to do; next time a MLB player is about to sign a big money contract, I'm gonna come in with a stun gun and sign the thing, that way I get the money. Or maybe when a big time CEO is gonna sign a new contract full of million dollars in stock options and bonuses, I bust into the office blast someone with SCM and sign their contract, then I'll be rich biatch!
Why not just have HBK challenge Benoit to a match for the spot next week, the match ends in a draw, and because Benoit put his spot on the line and HBK drew with him, they decide to throw HBK into the mix at Mania. I dont get why everything has to be so complicated and end up being so illogical. Just an observation, and this really means nothing, but the fans seemed more into Benoit as a challenger then HBK as a challenger, but we're playing Kliq rules, so it doesn't matter. Looks like HHH wont have to lay down to lose his title, congrats big man!
Kane segment was good, I'm glad they let the cat out of the bag about Taker without having him show up. Again, as I said months ago, the less these guys touch the higher the interest will be for their match.
Foley segment was cool, looks like someone watches CNN, I wonder if John Kerry will challenge that coward George Bush to a Steel Cage match at Mania?
They seem to have opened the door to a tag match at Mania with Rock and Foley due to the Evolution beatdown (which was well done BTW). As someone else mentioned, next week they are in California I think that means Rocky is a lock. I just wish they would promote it, but what can you do?
Benoit-HBK should be pretty great next week, I expect a draw, and then that leads to the Ladder Match announcement.
Main event was solid, I really like how the slower pace builds up to hot finishes, I think thats a good thing when the guys can build up to a peak and make the fans really care about it. Orton continues to improve, and its cool that they consistantly put him in main events.
Overall a strong show, interesting to see how they bring back Rock, and I hope to God for the sake of the work Foley and Orton have put into their angle that they dont book Rock to do any comedy.

I knew about this angle since about August I'm thinking.
I would be one of those people who would say that Taker as the Deadman cant work in 2004 for more than a short stint. So yeah, people are gonna mark out like crazy, just like they marked out when Hogan came back. But what will happen, just like it did with Hogan is that people realize its a tired act that belongs in a different time period and they will grow disinterested.
Now, thats not a guarantee, I mean people might stick with Taker long term, and maybe he should carry the company, but I doubt it. My guess is that by month two of the Deadman gimmick people will tired of it, and it wont do any business, and then Taker will have to go back to the Biker Taker, which is a better character for 2004.

Whats worse is taht anyone could see this coming 1000 miles away.
I guess HHH has jobbed (?) clean enough for a lifetime to do it anymore.
So when Benoit wins the title off of HBK: "oh, I never actually LOST the title to Benoit".
HHH needs to fu</>ck off.............
HBK/Benoit next week will be a #1 contender match. Benoit goes on to make Triple H TAP
*wakes up*
I can still hope right... RIGHT!?!
I hope they do something like Wrestlemania X. Even if Benoit has to beat HBK, I don't what to see a three way main eventing Wrestlemania. It could be worse though, they could add The Big Show and a McMahon in every corner.

The one thing that I kind of liked with the Taker as the biker, though, was that it let him showed off a different style of wrestling than we saw with him as the Dead Man (remember all the no-selling that he did when under that gimmick in order to get it over well), and, like it or not, he felt more at home with it than as the Dead Man. But then again, I could be wrong, but I've been a Taker mark for so long now, and I enjoy his work in either gimmick. Many people were saying that it was downhill for the Taker once be became "Big Evil" (or American Bad Ass, or whatever you called him under that gimmick), but I did like him as the biker, as well. I liked that he used a lot of different techniques than what we saw in the past. In a way, because of that, I'm not looking forward to the revisiting of the Dead Man Gimmick as others are (though in a way, I AM looking forward to it, too), but I'm still enjoying this angle they are doing.
I have my OWN ideas, though, of how the Undertaker is going to reappear, because I don't think that they will let the biker gimmick fully die (the WWE isn't THAT willing).

Raw didnt look to good this week despite Flair V Benoit and The Triple treat match that was about it the rest was interviews and promo's.
Im looking forward to the deadmans return better than his outdated biker gimik
I Think the rock will be back in two weeks time - not to bothered about him now though.
And as for the tag team situation i hope Flair and Batista defend at wrestlemania as theirs been no news of a match for either Batista, Ric, RVD or Booker T

Another solid show last night. What a way to open up the show. I'm sure Goldberg will probably spear Vince at Mania.
Anyway, I hope that Taker will show up like the week before Mania, because just having promos until Mania just doesn't work for me.
I'm not too thrilled about the possible triple threat match at Mania either. This sounds a lot like Summerslam when Austin erfused to get pinned by HHH, so they had Mick in the mix. I would almost guarantee Benoit will pin Michaels and possibly have Benoit/HHH at Backlash.

Finally, a positive move for the WWE. ;)
Great RAW last night. I was hooked for every second.
I really hope they go a different direction than HBK/HHH/Benoit, because as just about everyone has said, that just doesn't fit WrestleMania.
I'd love to see Benoit/(???) as the opener, then HHH/HBK halfway through the card, then Benoit/HHH as the main event, like WrestleMania X. That formula seemed to work pretty well. And I know this is just fanboy dreams, but what if it was Bret Hart vs. Benoit as the opener?
What's up with WWE triple threat matches? Every single time one person goes to the outside and the other two fight, then the guy gets back in and throws someone else out and fights the guy left, and etc, etc. It's a boring formula. WWE needs to take some notes from ECW's triple threat matches.
Benoit screwed up on the mic. He speaks too slowly and his words lose momentum. "That's too bad for you Shawn........ because at WrestleMania..... it will be.... Chris Benoit.... versus Triple H...............for the World Heavyweight Title!" (slight pop)
I wonder if they're going to sign UT vs. Kane without UT even being on RAW before Mania. That could be interesting.
Anyways, great RAW this week, and I can't wait for Benoit/Michaels.
