It has been reported that John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) has handed in his notice to WWE Officials and is scheduled to make his final appearance on the 10/6 episode of Smackdown according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

JBL is doing very well as an investment banker, and does not want to continue in travelling to the weekly Smackdown tapings.

According to this week's Wrestling Observer (dated September 25th, 2006), he has handed in his notice and is quitting the company completely, leaving his current one day-a-week announcing gig. The October 6th Smackdown will be his last show.

Apparently he's doing really well in his new day job as an investment banker in New York, and has decided he doesn't need the hassle of travelling to and from wherever Smackdown is taped every Tuesday. He's also been very critical of John Laurinaitis behind the scenes as well, and is somewhat disillusioned with the product.

He needs to go to TNA and replace Don West. I mean, Impact is usually taped in Orlando every time right?

This is horrible news. JBL really made Smackdown all the more enjoyable for me with his great commentary.

Who do you think they'll replace JBL with?

But yeah, I was just starting to grow to like JBL on commentary. He had the unique position of "realistic tweener who sees potential but doesn't kiss ass", which I loved. That, plus his awesome humorous comments here and there. :(

The American Dream Dusty Rhodes should get JBL's spot.

WWE's talent pool is getting smaller and smaller. I hope that they do replace him with MDM Dibiase or some wrestler that is gold on the mic like Jericho.

Straight from TPWW:

We reported earlier here that JBL may be leaving WWE following the company’s No Mercy PPV early next month in order to pursue his full time career as an investment banker. According to an update by Dave Meltzer (editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter), this may not be the case.

It appears as if WWE wants to keep JBL as a color commentator for the SmackDown brand and have already began negotiations on a deal that will keep him. There is even a possibility that the new deal may have already been reached.

Check back here later for more details on this breaking story.

I sure hope JBL stays. He is probably the most entertaining announcer in WWE right now.

JBL is far and away the best color man in wrestling today. He plays the heel roll so well behind the mic it's almost unbelievable. I hope they can negotiate a deal with him, because WWE will be hard pressed to find someone to replace him.

JBL was hilarious tonight....

MIZ enters the ring.
JBL: "Oh great, things just went from bad to worse!"

There had been talk for a while that JBL may be leaving WWE because the demands on his time from so many other projects made it difficult for him. While there are reports all over that JBL gave notice, based on a Wrestling Observer report this week, the latest info is that a deal was actually worked out earlier this week to keep him with the company.

PWTorch has learned the primary concern with JBL was travel time getting to Smackdown every Tuesday and back to New York on Wednesdays. The concession that was being discussed this week was allowing JBL to ride in "Air McMahon" (Vince McMahon's plane) after Smackdown so he could fly right home on Tuesday night and be back at work at his other jobs early Wednesday, rather than using most of Wednesday as a travel day.

WWE had no made any plans to replace JBL, and they don't consider anyone else at his level at this point and "network-ready." As a result, they have been scrambling to make the logistics work for JBL so he could continue in his role.

Looks like we don't need to worry!

Wow, they're giving him a ride in McMahon's personal plane?! I don't think I've ever seen WWE bend over so much to keep critical talent.

Well done Vinnie Mac, because aside from Kurt Angle, no one else could probably fill JBL's cc post.

Unless he does leave, and we're stuck with Cole solo for a while.

heh, well, keeping JBL on color commentary is good. He's the best one they've had in a while. Funny that he is/was critical of Johnny Ace. C'mon, Vince, when JBL is starting to hate the guy, I think it's time to push him off a cliff.

JBL would still be working Monday, which is a weekday still, and in truth, I don't think trying to team JR up with anyone else at this stage of the game is good. He can already barely keep his head in the game, and changing his partner might only serve to make his ramblings even more senseless and hard to decipher than they already are.

Not to mention King sabotages everyone but JR, and JR tends to only be more proper marginally.
