View Full Version : Your current top 20 wrestlers.

What Would Kevin Do?
10-10-2006, 12:31 AM
So yeah. List your current top 20 wrestlers. You can say why they rank where they do if you want. The only thing I would like is for you to specify the range your ranking (Ex, Top 20 in the World, Top 20 in America, Top 20 on TV, Top 20 in WWE, etc), and also try to give a brief insight on your ranking method (if you're using just talent, matches, popularity, kayfabe reasons, etc.)

I'll post mine in a bit.

Top 20 in America (No Specific Order)

C.M. Punk - Although he hasn't done a whole lot since his arrival in ECW, and to be honest his time in OVW was indeed a watered down version of his RoH self, I think he is still simply the best thing going right now. And while I may not like what is considered "The Watered Down" version of Punk, he is trying to reach a whole new massive audience, and needs to find his "5 minute" style of working. Which he is doing well doing.

Chris Daniels - God. Simply god. Seems to be a little half assed lately, but still half his ass is better than most of the other asses combined.

Alex Shelley - He is going to be the next person on everyone's "Keep an eye on" list. Hasn't reached that level of noteworthy work, but he is about to really blossom into the performer he can be.

Eric Young - I love this guy. Seriously, great worker, fuckin hilarious expressions (I havn't enjoyed expressions on this level since Regal the British Good Will), and charismatic to boot. Awesome!

Homicide - Almost makes me wish I was a beaner...I say almost because he is kind of bland in TNA.

Shark Boy - I like him. He is fuckin dumb and I think every self respecting smart should hate him, yet I love every time I get to see him.

Rob Van Dam - Will always be a mark for and cheer like a little school girl bitch for...

Undertaker - See Rob Van Dam...

Benoit - See Undertaker...

Kevin Nash - He doesn't need to lay down, and I don't mind if he polotiks 4 lyfe...whenever he does go over it's usually by some funny way or some obviously fake injury, so I say keep on winning Nash, and pay no attention to anyone's hatred for you. You earn your paycheck before the ring comes into play.

Sabu - Can still put it on the line in and out of the ring. Whatever that "it" is about him, he still got it.

Triple H - The new DX sucks in comparission, but it's still one of the best things going today.

Shawn Michaels - Same DX comment as Hunter.

Kurt Angle - The Wrestling Machine, hasn't steped foot in TNA yet, and already is getting the internet community ready for the new Must See TV Thursday.

Christian - Peep 4 Lyfe!

Carlito - He has such a potentially bright future, I see them fucking it up bad though. :-/

Big Show - Since showing up in ECW, he has finally become the dominate giant from deep down.

Raven - I can't help but mark for him, even though I am embarassed as hell.

JBL - The best reason to watch SmackDown lately, don't point out he doesn't get in the ring...

I ranked them based on their ability right now. Some guys, like Angle, Benoit, and Muto have had debilitating injuries which have dampened their talent, and what they can do.

I've always liked Triple H, and never gave a damn about the whole backstage sway crap, because the guy consistantly delivers fantastic matches, and is brilliant on the mic. I honestly beleive there is no one in the business who plays a better heel than Triple H. Not Race. Not Flair.

As for CIMA, he's got more charisma than every wrestler in Japan combined, and I've never seen a CIMA match that wasn't at least 3 1/2 stars, often 4.
Of course seeing him live might be making me biased a little.

Finally, go check out the kaz hayashi/Shuji Kondo video I posted in the last couple pages of the youtube thread.

AdrianM's Power 20! ( ionly get to watch WWE, so thats where all the wrestlers are from).

20. Lashley - I don't particuarly like the guy tbh, but he is getting in some ok matches atm.
19. RVD - had a good match with test this week, and a really good match with Hardcore Holly last week. Hopefully, with no more stupidity, ca come to dominate ECW.
18. Johnny Nitro - has been pretty good as of late. I have however been a bit disspointed with his feud with Jeff Hrdy, and his lack of interview skills has really shone in over the last month.
17. HBK - is an amazing wrestler, as we all know. he would be higher, but he just seems to be sitting in the background of DX atm, way behind HHH.
16. Sabu - been having some top matches since ECW began.
15. Gregory Helms - he's working well, not great albeit, with Matt Hardy. Has awesome entrance music and putting on solid matches.
14. King Booker - doing good stuff. I get annoyed at seeing a champ always jobbing tho. if he wasn't jobbing so much, then I think he'd be right up there!
13. Big Show, has that real, giant feel about him...I know it may sound weird, but I think he lost that for a while. At the moment he just seems unstoppable.
12. Kevin Thorn - I think he's awesome. Big guy, love his theme music and I really like Ariel, seems a good, solid wrestler.
11. HHH - doing a good job, be interesting where he goes from here tho.
10. Jeff Hardy - have enjoyed his feud with Johnny Nitro, and it should only get better. He also seems to have found some charisma as of late.
9. Vito - I hardly even knew him before he started wearing a dress, now I can't get enough of it...wonder if he can win the US title?
8. Fit Finlay - such awesome intensity, just doing a real solid job right now.
7. Carlito - He keeps jobbing to Randy Orton, yet does it so he still looks strong, has been awesome lately.
6. Hardcore Holly - has stepped up a gear, and seems to truly belong in ECW.
5. Test - I used to hate Test, but he's doing some pretty good stuff right now.
4. John Cena - I don't partiucarly like the guy, but I have really liked his work in the ring recently...altho thats mainly because of Edge
3. Randy Orton - is putting on great matches for Carlito, and I think he's just about to explode agan (just like in 2004).
2. Edge - The guy is just gold...he is truly greatness in the ring and on the mic.
1. CM Punk - there is something that I really like about this guy. I'd never seen him before he came to ECW, but I'd heard alot about him, and so far I have been really impressed by him.

Conclude:
Raw: 8
Smackdown: 5
ECW: 7

I just can't come up with 20 wrestlers to list. It's been way too long since I've watched enough wrestling to really judge talent. I'm becoming more of a casual fan as every day passes. So I'll just list the Top 20 wrestlers who I want to see more of(by this I mean I want to see either A) more tapes of their matches from indy shows, or B) more of them on WWE/TNA TV):

Necro Butcher
Chris Hero
Claudio Castagnoli
KENTA
Super Dragon
William Regal
Finlay
CM Punk
CIMA
Homicide
Steve Corino
Bryan Danielson
Delirious
Jimmy Jacobs
Kevin Nash
Paul London
Jun Akiyama
Minoru Suzuki
Jimmy Rave

Added to this, would be the whole CHIKARA company in general.

1. Joe - love his matches, stiff as hell, great character
2. Angle - don't really have to say anything
3. Sting - I love Sting, I am a mark for him.
4. Edge - great year for Edge, great matches and great character
5. Styles - amazing
6. Daniels - amazing
7. Strong - amazing
8. Big Show - entertaining as hell and good matches
9. American Dragon - great matches
10. Booker - entertaining as hell and some good matches
11. Finlay - entertaining and good matches, like WWE's Joe.
12. Benoit - He just came back and he's kickin ass already.
13. Steiner - Loved his stuff in TNA, especially Joe
14. Christian - great worker, very entertaining
15. RVD - he has slipped because he got caught with pot, but he still rocks
16. Sabu - better than ever in the new ECW
17. Abyss - Best big man in the buisness
18. Rhino - underated worker still!
19. Jeff Jarrett - His program with Sting is great
20. Cena - He has had a great year, despite shitty TV matches, his PPV matches have been good.

All in all... 10 TNA workers, 2 Raw workers, 3 Smackdown Workers, 3 ECW workers, 2 ROH workers

Top Twenty at the Moment
20. King Booker - The king gimmick is absolutely golden. I had pretty much grown tired of Booker until he became the king, and now he's one of the main reasons that I tune into SmackDown!
19. Raven - He's on the list not so much for what he's doing at the moment, but for how much I still like him for what he used to do.
18. Johnny Nitro - I'm not sure why, but I really like this guy.
17. Matt Sydal - Sydal's pure athleticism is incredible. His standing moonsault and SSP are things of beauty.
16. Delirious - It's simple: BAH BAH BAH BAH!
15. Jack Evans - This is one spot monkey that's spots will never get old. When he takes a bump, I think he's dead about 75% of the time. Unbelievable.
14.. Roderick Strong - Strong loses points for mic skill, but more than makes up for it in the ring.
13. AJ Styles - I prefer him in ROH over TNA (which is usually the case), but Styles is someone who will lead wrestling in the future. It's too bad that TNA already blew their load on him.
12. Triple H - I've always been a HHH fan, and he's been pretty damn funny recently.
11. Kurt Angle - I honestly wasn't digging the little bit of Angle that was seen in ECW, and the move to TNA is definitely making me look forward to seeing him in the ring against some fresh opponents.
10. Kevin Thorne - ECW has been doing a good job of making younger talent look credible, and Thorne is a definite product of that. I can't wait to see he and Punk hook it up eventually.
9. Christopher Daniels - He is always on point. Always.
8. Alex Shelley - Shelley needs to be a main player in the X Division.
7. Homicide - He's brutal and ruthless and very hard to understand. Homicide seems to live his gimmick, and that's what makes him so exciting to watch.
6. Edge - Edge has the potential to be an amazing champion, but they keep taking it away from him. I'm glad to see that he's going to feud with DX. It will only help to solidify him as a main eventer.
5. Colt Cabana - Cabana is so good at entertaining on the mic, that I wouldn't care if he were a bit sloppy in the ring. But he's not, which is why I like him so much. That and I have bias for Chicago when it comes to sports.
4. Samoa Joe - I see this man being a champion that everyone can get behind, leading to him being a key reason that TNA blows up huge. Or I hope that's how it works out.
3. Austin Aries - Give this man the X Division Title NOW.
2. Bryan Danielson - He is the cockiest prick around, but can back it up better than anybody. Watching him live is incredible. I can't wait until 6/28 when he faces Joe.
1. CM Punk - Simply my favorite worker at the moment. I hadn't watched wrestling in forever until I happened upon a tribute video of his, and was captivated.

Its too hard for me to list mine.

WWE: Triple H, Shawn, Booker T, RVD, Benoit go without saying as tops for me.
Edge is always a favorite of mine but hes really up there lately.
I really have grown to like Nitro and Finlay is entertaining as hell right now.
Big Show and Sabu are both great right now, not long ago I was sick of them.
I like CM Punk but not as much as others, and as for Cena, hes no Angle, but hes not as bad as he gets credit for and entertains me.

TNA: I dont watch enough to rank the talent but I really like Styles, Daniels, Joe, and of course Sting and Christian.

And last but certainly not least, KURT ANGLE.

2. Homicide - He's great in TNA has a member of LAX, but he is the heart of ROH. Been there since Day 1 and now is the top babyface in the company. He is the Puerto Rican version of Dean Malenko and can make anyone look good, maybe even Batista. Will be Ring of Homicide Champion before the end of the year.

Top 20 of the indies

20. Riccochet- Has put on some solid performances and can do some cool stuff but still has a long way to go

19. "Spyder" Nate Webb- Webb has always entertained me but him not being very active this year brings him down. Still love the teenage dirtbag entrance though.

18. Cheech- Another guy who has had a great year. Cheech offers a lot and hopefuly more promotions will take note and use him more

17. El Generico- Generico has put on some great matches this year and had one of the best matches of the first night of the tpi with Chris Bosh.

16. Gran Akuma- Akuma definitly proved his worth this year. Especially his match with low ki from the tpi night one. Akuma can do nothing but get better and I feel he could easily make it to at least the tpi semi finals next year

15. Jimmy Jacobs- This year was one of Jimmys best charactar wise. He has always is capable of putting on top notch matches but aside from being in a big angle for roh he was also IWA-MS biggest heels for a long time.

14. B Boy- The New age punisher had his strongest year yet, competing all over america as well as Japan.

13. Jigsaw- This was Jig's biggest year. He won the czw jr heavyweight title, had a strong showing on this years best of the best as well as an incredible match with Davey Richards for night one of the TPI

12. Necro Butcher- This year Necro proved he was more than just another garbage wrestler and continues to be awesome

11. Ruckus- Ruckus is one of the funnest guys to watch. He always pulls off some amazing stuff and really steped up his game this year

10. Larry Sweeney- ICWICWA TEXARKANA TV champion is one of my favorite wrestlers with an old school influence.

9. Colt Cabana- Not only is Cabana a great comedy wrestler. He also proved that he can wrestle the european style and was apart of one of the best heated fueds this year with homicide.

8. Delirious- The masked mad man has shown he can go this year. Having great matches against Bryan Danielson, Roderick Strong and Low KI

7. Cluadio Castagnoli- Claudio has done wonders this year and I predict by the end of 2007 you will see this man in a wwe ring

6. Jack Evans- Japan has done him wonders and he just continues to get better.

5. Eddie Kingston- Not only is Kingston one of the hardest hitting guys in wrestling but also one of the best when it comes to promos. His continuing fued with Chris Hero this year has been incredible.

4. Low Ki- If Eddie Kingston is one of the hardest hitting men in wrestling then Low Ki is the hardest hitting guy in wrestling. He has done wonders for IWA-MS this year

3. Chris Hero- This year Hero has set the wrestling world ablaze. From the war he ignited on ROH. To currently being tag champions with Claudio in 3 different promotions.

2. Bryan Danielson- One of the best today. He has done wonders for the ring of honor title and continues to be a great champion

1. Mike Quackenbush- This man has come back from a career ending back injury and still puts on some of the best matches possible, Quack is a veteran and also trains some of the best at the Chikara wrestle factory.

Hmmmmm. Tough choice since I only follow WWE. Even at that though, I havn't actually watched it on television in probably about 6 months, since I don't have a TV in my apartment. So, if I had to choose my current top 20 favorite wrestlers based on wwe.com results and some Youtube videos it might go something like this:

20. Brian Kendrick
19. Hardcore Holly (he's an asshole, but his match w/ RVD impressed me)
18. Johnny Nitro
17. Kenny
16. Kane
15. Trevor Murdoch
14. William Regal
13. Batista
12. Kennedy
11. HBK
10. RVD
9. Benoit
8. Edge
7. HHH
6. Paul London
5. Lashley
4. CM Punk
3. Big Show
2. Finlay
1. King Booker

Hahaha, Tatanka.

This is not in order. Just my top 20 wrestlers on tv in Canada and US:

01. Christian Cage - I love everything about him. He's one of the best guys on the mic and in the ring ever.

02. Shelton Benjamin - Big deal, he's not that great on the mic. He's amazing in the ring and I hop he gets to better showcase his abilities soon. I can't recall him ever having a bad match.

03. Gregory Helms - His new personality is great. He's really great in the ring too. He's usually a highlight on Smackdown.

04. Rhino - When he's motivated he's awesome. Right now he's motivated and in a feud with one of his best friends, Christian.

04. Kane - has been thrown into countless crap angles. I feel bad for the guy, but no one else could have made any of his shit angles at least watchable. I love his in ring work too. Overall he's got eveything.

05. Kurt Angle - he may die soon, but until that day he's still going to be damn amazing in the ring. I wish he'd go back to being goofy though. Maybe..... maybe there could be a little of his goofyness with Christian.

06. Sting - Sure he's not as good as he was 5 years ago, but he's still got it. He's getting up there in age, but he's still got loads of charisma and ring psychology. It's great to see him back. I hope he stays for a coupel more years.

07. Samoa Joe - Say what you want about him not being as good in TNA as he is in the indies. It's maily due to TNA and their damn squash matches. TNA's debut Impact on Spike TV featured him in a great match against Daniels (I think).

08. Chavo - one of my favorite guys right now. It's about time he got real singles push in the WWE. He's got everything a guy needs to be a main eventer.... except in the WWE. He's not white and huge. Oh well, maybe the WWE will continue to push him over the next few months. He's always been better as a heel. A US title would be a good idea. A Chavo / Benoit feud could be awesome.

09. Test - His time on the mic should be short, but he should get lots of ring time. I've always enjoyed him in the ring. Since he's been back from his neck surgery he's been really motivated and intense. Hopefully this intensity will stay and he'll continue to be pushed. He's damn ripped.

10. RVD -

11. Big Show - He's finally being booked how she should have been booked in the WWE. He's a giant and should be dominating everyone. Big Show has always entertained me. Right now he's on fire and is looking damn impressive.

12. CM Punk - His matches in ECW have been too short, but that's mainly due to squash matches. He hasn't disappointed me yet, but he hasn't overly impressed me yet either. I have an idea of what he's capable of, I just gotta see him do it. Plus he has a Boucning Souls tattoo. I gotta love a guy with a tattoo of one of my favorite bands.

13. Super Crazy - He makes eveything look so easy. I'll go as far and say that he's probably the best flipper in North America. His flips are so smooth. I'm surprised about his push on Raw, but am loving it. I say give him more ring time and some credible matches and feuds.

14. King Booker - ALL HAIL KING BOOKER. As stupid as King Booker is, he makes it work. It shows that he's here to put a lot into wrestling. Come on, a black ghetto world champion acting british

15. Finlay - He's 50 and still has it. The fact that Johnny Ace tried to burry him with a shit gimmick, and he's made it work so well that he's a serious conterder for the world title says a lot.

16. Regal - He's basically been used as a stepping stone for up and comers.

17. Little Guido - Even though he hasn't been used in a while he's still up there. I also had to fill up this list with 20 guys. When he's on tv he's great.

18. Mat Striker - Great on the mic, great in the ring. I'd prefer him to be a little less gimmicky, but I'm not going to complain as long as he's being used.

19. Edge - I loved him up until he came back from neck surgery. Only recently have I finally started to really enjoy him again. Lately he seems less forced and more natural character wise. Lita hasn't been used as much to get him over as a heel lately. maybe the WWE realised he doesn't need someone the fans hate to get him hated. I'm hoping also they're slowly trying to phase Lita's heel heat away from Edge. I prefer when Edge is funnier, but he's doing a pretty good job lately.

No more typing.

Top 20 in the World... Over the past year

My list is based primarly on relative work rate and relative success (wins/losses, drawing power, company worth, etc). I say relative as you really can't compare WWE guys to other feds in workrate or drawing power to other guys directly...

Anywho...

#1. "American Dragon" Brian Danielson. - This may seem like a fanboyism, ROH bot answer, but a strong arguement can be made that he is one of, if not the best wrestler in the world today. Over the past year, he has put on tons of great matches, had multiple 60 minute matches (against Samoa Joe, Nigel McGuiness, Roderick Strong, and Colt Cabana), fought and beat a returning Lance Storm, unified the ROH World and Pure title, got a one on one win against KENTA, AND a little less than a year ago, he beat Marufuji, who is currently the GHC World Champion. Plus, if you like wrestling, the man is never a bore to watch, and has a wide array of moves that don't get tiring to watch.

#2 Rob Van Dam - The man has had a great year until he fucked it up, and he hasn't lost much steam even after he did. He dethroned Cena, beat Edge, beat Randy Orton, beat Kurt Angle, and he did it in the span of a few weeks. Plus he's had great matches with both Test and Hardcore Holly.

#3 Kurt Angle

#4 TIE Shawn Micheals/HHH

#6 Kenta Kobashi - The man is amazing, and he beat cancer. He's had better years, but I'd find it difficult not to have him in my top 10.

#7 Samoa Joe - He's a huge player in America's 2nd and third largest wrestling companies, he's over with the fans, he's awesome, and there were "talks" of him fighting Jun Akiyama, and at the time, possibly for the GHC World Title.

#8 TIE Naomichi Marufuji/KENTA - I have a hard time deciding who to like more on this one... Both have had great years. Maru should get the vote here since he did win the GHC world title, however, KENTA has had a great year in both NOAH and ROH.

#10 Giant Bernard - What? Prince Albert? You're shitting me... No, I'm not. THe man has had great matches this year with Tanahashi, Yugi Nagata, Tenazn, and even Lesnar. This man IS the monster Gaijin overseas right now. If he keeps up his style, and keeps putting the effort into it, I think within a few years it won't be that out there to make Bernard/Vader comparisons.

#11 Minoru Suzuki - Triple Crown champion, and one of the best heels today. Plus, the guy can go, and has some badass fucking hair :)

#12 Finlay - The man is bringing style back to the WWE, is over despite being screwed over by gimmicky ideas, and has had a damn good year

#13 Hiroshi Tanahashi

#14 Hiroyoshi Tenzan

#15 TIE CIMA/Naruki Doi

#17 Nigel McGuiness

# 18 Homicide

#19 Colt Cabana

#20 Voodoo Murders.... - yes, I know that's actual a stable, but come on, if you know who they are, you can't argue against this.

There are some notable people missing from my list... I'll get into it when I have more time.

Hahaha, Tatanka.

I'm assuming you may not have been a fan in the early 90's.
Well, if you were, you'll know just how much everyone hated tatanka. When he turned on lex luger to join the million-dollar corporation, he was probably the most over heel in the WWE.

For that reason, he gets a spot in my top 20 of all time

Some of you folks have really interesting taste...

I'll do one later when I get time but it'll probably be crap cause I don't watch nearly enough PWG/IWA-MS/CZW/AJPW/NJPW/Dragon Gate

Oh, and I don't watch WWE and barely watch TNA. Yup, this should be fun.

I was laughing because Tatanka now sucks a lot of balls. He was pretty over in the early 90s.

Fuck yes, Larry Sweeney. I've just discovered Sweeney, thanks to CHIKARA's podcast on iTunes(check it out, its a decent clip show). Thinking about ordering the tape of Cibernetico Forever when it comes out. Of course the actual Cibernetico is tomorrow night, looks to be an amazing match.
