Because they changed the entire game's engine. It doesn't play the same from 1 to 2. 2 to 3 play relatively similar, while 1 to 2 or 1 to 3 are nothing alike. They changed the game's physics after 1, from weapon physics, to player physics. It is the same game in name and style alone.

The only really similar thing is the story and graphical style. The gameplay is completely different.

Dunno, it was like 6 years ago when Halo came out. I guess I just don't remember that far.

We used to have weekly LAN parties that carried over even after Halo 2 came out, because we still liked 1 better. So for several years, we played Halo 1 religiously.

Another different friend had LAN parties virtually every day for about a year after the game came out. He's played with most of the top MLG pros. The Ogre brothers, Zyos, Walshy, and a lot of others.

Halo 1 days were pretty amazing. Good players connected online over Xbox Connect, and had some pretty amazing matches. The main reason I remember it so well is because of the people they played with. I couldn't even stack up to their skill level, but I watched their games, and they were insane. The guy who hosted these parties was ranked 13th in the world over xbox connect for a while. (keep in mind, majority of pros used this to play others of their skill level) Seriously, the guy was a god at the game, and had a chance to go pro but never did. He beat The Ogres a couple times even.

Another buddy of theirs is currently dating Foxy, one of the top female MLG pros (and she's fucking hot). He himself was one of the best snipers I've ever seen in the game. Played with a 10 sensitivity, and was a god at it. (Go figure, he ended up being a marine sniper when he went into the military)

Brings back memories, and it sucks the game changed like it did. The game really defined skill-based shooters. Halo 3 is good, but Halo 1 was -amazing-.

My friends and I used to LAN with Halo 1 as well. We would find 10+ kids and take over the house before his parents got home. They used to be so pissed when they walked in and there were wires everywhere. I remember playing online over XBox connect one time, 4 friends of mine versus some random kids. These kids were jumping through the air on High Ground (I think that was the map, the one where it had that long catwalk where the sniper rifle was) and sniping people with head shots.

^Hang Em High. Greatest Halo map ever. That, and Damnation.

LAN parties were cool because people started to know about this friend hosting them all the time. They had 4 TVs, set up in different rooms, with 4 xboxes. People from all over Missouri would show up, and most of the time he didn't even know them.

Everyone around here who played video games got to know who he was, and he'd be walking through school and have someone just be like "SUP NAZI" and he would have no idea who they were (his halo name was HALO NAZI).

It used to be real fun. We would yell at each other from room to room and shit talk to keep things fun. I remember playing rockets on prisoner and my buddy was on the highest catwalk. I was in one of the corners and fired ahead of him where he was running. I didn't aim for the ground for whatever reason, but he jumped and the rocket hit him directly in air. It was epic. He was on a killing spree or something. All I heard from the next room was, "Ian you motherrrrr fuckerrrrr."

A lot of my friends seemingly do nothing but play this game, so they can generally slaughter me with ease. One of them routinely plays games up to 250-kills on Lockout, takes fucking ages and he always wins by at least 100.

I get frustrated online because I feel like all it is is a barrage of grenades and then an easy kill...I'm used to COD where you have time to react to a grenade but that's not the case in Halo. Like seriously whenever I see an opponent the first thing they do is go for their grenades. Just pretty boring IMO.

I know it seems that way but there's a lot of stuff going on in a high level game. The big three in Halo is Grenades, Guns, and Melee. Learning how to use the three main attacks effectively, as well as countering them, is paramount. A well versed player (like myself) would make a grenade happy opponant look silly as we'd walk right around the blast range and put them down. I do understand your view being that you're not experienced in Halo.

A lot of guys complain about silly things like 'too much jumping' or ''grenade over usage' and it usually comes off to me that they're just not experienced enough in the game. It's a hard arguement for me because they're not gonna go back and play Halo enough to move past those short-comings just from my counsil, ya know? That's why I like hearing about what people dislike about Halo or any game because I can conclude whether they have legit issues or the game just overwhelmed them.

Requiem

Nah, grenades are bad for killing. They should be used either in groups of people, and then picking those people off, or they should be used to make someone move. They can be a great tool to guide people out of hiding.

My main dislike about Halo 3 is their broken melee system. They shouldn't have changed it. In 1 and 2, whoever punched first tended to win the fight. In Halo 3, whoever has more health will always come out on top. It's stupid, and takes a lot of the reactionary skill out of it.

In Halo 1, I was a god at melee. I played boxer, while most people I knew still played normal setup, so I came out 90% of the time with the victory in a close-up fight. In 2, not so much because of some changes to how things worked, but punching itself was the same, and you could still destroy someone if you knew what you were doing.

Now, it's just luck.. Hope you have that little bit more health than the guy you're fighting.

Even then you have to consider your health in the matter. Still, it was changed mostly to take the host advantage out of the equation. Doesn't affect my game enough for me to worry about it. And you sound like a decent enough player that you could work around it, yourself.

Players like us don't need luck.

Host advantage is a non-factor. It never mattered in Halo 2.

What is Halo Wars and ODST?

Halo Wars is an RTS set in the Halo universe. Surprisingly fun game. The demo is out. ODST is a prequel/expansion with a new story to play through, as well as Halo 3's multiplayer (with every map released plus three new ones). ODST is the last Halo 3 product you'll ever need, unless you wanna revisit Halo 3's story.

Host advantage is a non-factor. It never mattered in Halo 2.

I heard it was, but maybe you're right. Still doesn't alter gameplay of such a magnitude that it deserved the outcry it got in the Halo 3 forums.

Requiem
02-10-2009, 12:50 PM
Nah, it is a pretty big deal. Meleeing is still possible, but it is absolutely a horrible mechanic that they changed it to. Also wish they had kept the Halo 1 way of having to crouch when you land in order to not take damage if falling from high places.

Just saying.. it's little things that piss me off about Halo 3.

No damage from high falls is a welcome change, IMO.

It's pretty gay, IMO. They just kept making change after change to take the skill out of everything. Obviously, there's still skill in certain things, but they removed a lot of it.

Not sure if it's my copy of the game, or my Xbox beginning to struggle, but when I play Halo 3, I get one game online and after that, and it loads back to the lobby, my xbox just goes into overdrive...like a really loud whirring. I can still play online, but it can only load the map that I first played on (i.e. High Ground may get loaded first time and then over and over again). Plus, it's really slow.

Anyone else had anything like this?

Do you think installing to Xbox HD will have any effect? I know Bungie said not to do it, because basically the Halo Disc cache's maps to the xbox hard drive and then loads them, and installing and running from the hard drive would mean it is copying the maps to another location on the hard drive, making it slower...but it can't be any worse than it is now.

Kalyx triaD

I never had that issue, seems like a problem with the stat upload process. You may have to empty your Halo saves or do something more drastic involving your entire HD.

i just played halo 3 for the first time since november. i was a grade 2 captain back then but when i started up again it had me as a recruit and i just got promoted to apprentice. did they redo the experience system since then?

UmbrellaCorporation
03-14-2009, 06:19 PM
You still have one GLOBAL rank. If you look at your stats on Bungie.net, you should still be a Captain Grade 2 globally.

However, now you have an individual rank for each playlist. So you could be a 5 star general in Team Slayer and an Apprentice in MLG, while being a Sergeant or Lieutenant in Lone Wolves.

You didn't lose your rank. You are still a Grade 2 Captain. It's just that you have to rank up in each individual playlist now.

Kalyx triaD
03-14-2009, 07:04 PM
Which is cool unless you don't play regularly. So I'm rubbing elbows with the worst Objective players ever because I didn't get on the grind when they first activated exclusive ranks.

...And I'm rusty as shit and my aim is embarrassingly comparable to a blind child now so that might factor in as well.
