My friend wants to buy one to put on Ebay.

He thinks he's gonna be able to just walk up to a Best Buy on launch day and get one

He should have preordered.

But then again Ebay has certain parameters in order to auction one off.

Gamestop Slashes PS3 Stock Counts?
The hugely anticpated console may be even more rare than we thought.
by Micah Seff

November 13, 2006 - While IGN already has dozens of PS3 units littering the hallways of our offices, most gamers out there are avidly anticipating the much-hyped console's release this Friday. Gamers who pre-ordered the console from Gamestop/EB Games may be in for a big surprise as the November 17 launch date fast approaches.

We have received word that, due to lower than expected product yields, many Gamestop/EB Games stores have been forced to slash their stock counts for the console by as much as half. This may mean that many people who preordered the system will be unable to pick one up this Friday. Apparently, EB Games is selecting pre-order holders based on the pre-order date and phoning them up to inform them of the cancellation of their pre-orders.

Following last year's debacle with the lack of Xbox 360 launch units, EB Games had tried to remain conservative in the number of pre-orders it sold in an effort to avoid just this situation. While this may not exactly spell doom for the future of the new console, it may leave a sour taste in the mouths of gamers across North America as they scramble to find the almost nonexistent PS3 units they so desperately crave. On the bright side, those that do manage to get their hands on the PS3 will be able to jack up the prices even more when they inevitably resell them on Ebay.

$20,000 PS3s, anyone?

ClockShot
11-14-2006, 05:38 PM
I read a similar article about this. They are "asking" the EB Games/Gamestop employees if they can take their PS3 on the second shipment around december. And those who lost their preorder get rewarded with a $19.99 or lower used game or DVD.

I know out at Hastings, we (the employees) can't buy the PS3 or Wii on launch day.

As a matter of fact, the Hastings chain as a whole is only getting 300 consoles. The whole chain. Yes, I'm serious.

As for the Wii, if you get someone to pick it up for you, you can get one. As long as the EMPLOYEE isn't walking out the door with it, it doesn't matter if their parents/spouse/friend/etc. picks it up.

A friend of mine who works at gamestop got royaly screwed out of his pre-order. He got there on his day off or some such and stood in line to pre-order. Well, he was the first one.. so he pre-ordered it like a normal customer and all. Well then they found out they were only getting like 4 (or something like that) in, and for some reason they bumped his pre-order to #8 on the list. He is pissed, and is about ready to quit his job. He already said he's never buying from them again.

CompUSA: Buy 40" HDTV, Reserve A PS3 (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/compusa-buy-40-hdtv-reserve-a-ps3-214847.php)

Fry's Electronics PlayStation 3 Bundle. Cheap at $1079.
Wal-Mart "Customer's Choice" PlayStation 3 Bundle. A steal at $1491.
CompUSA Screwjob PlayStation 3 Bundle? A minimum of $2300. Oh, the pain.
Found via blog Uninnovate (http://www.uninnovate.com/2006/11/14/sony-taking-playstation-3-pre-order-bundling-to-new-lows-at-compusa/) (but scooped by the Cheap Ass Gamer forums (http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114068)), the current promotion running at CompUSA demands that, if you want to buy a PS3 from the retailer, you'll need to invest in a Sony branded HDTV, 40-inches or bigger. (I already ordered three.)
Also, according to Uninnovate, should you return the TV you "must also return the PlayStation 3 and pay a 15% restocking fee". I can't imagine anyone having a problem with that. You guys cool? Michael McWhertor
Sony taking Playstation 3 pre-order bundling to new lows at CompUSA (http://www.uninnovate.com/2006/11/14/sony-taking-playstation-3-pre-order-bundling-to-new-lows-at-compusa/) [via Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161716.html)]
Update: Angry reader e-mail after the jump...I was taken in by CompUSA's "buy a 40" HDTV", get a PS3 Reserve on Sunday. I called back today to find out that my PS3 will be delayed 4-8 weeks, and it would cost me 15% (about 300) to return the TV with restocking fees. If this was a Sony-CompUSA deal, what a joke. I ordered from the Schaumburg, IL store. Thanks for alerting other gamers to this despicable scam.
Ouch! Sorry, Jim! Keep your head up, rest of the console reserving public!

Anyone else check out their local distributors yet?

There was a HUGE line at Best Buy even at 10PM, there were at least 30 people sitting there doing nothing. Funny knowing that only 10 of them will get a PS3

I know when my mom got home from Wal-Mart she told me of some poeple camping out there for a Wii

Then I also know that a friend of mine knows that his friend has been camping out at a Super Wal-Mart since Wednesday for a PS3. If he gets it then I'll be playing it tonight. If not then... ah well. It's not my ass out there in the freezing cold looking to fork out 600 bucks for a system that'll probably be plagued with bugs.

PS3 launch sees multiple thefts

Armed men take "at least four" systems from California GameStop; three men held up outside Oregon mall during early morning vigil.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Nov 16, 2006 5:59 pm PT

With PlayStation 3 systems fetching thousands of dollars on eBay and gamers across the country lining up to purchase Sony's $500 and $600 consoles, some unscrupulous people are seeing the launch as a quick way to make a buck at someone else's expense.

The Sacremento Bee is reporting that "at least four" PS3 systems were stolen along with several Xbox 360s from an Elk Grove, California, GameStop by a pair of armed men Thursday morning. Elk Grove police responded by notifying local retailers and nearby police departments of the theft, and advising those lining up for the system not to do so alone, and not to bring cash.

Meanwhile, Eugene, Oregon's KMTR News is reporting that three men who had been camped out in front of a Circuit City waiting for the Friday launch of the PlayStation 3 were robbed early Thursday morning.

According to the station's report, the three had left the line temporarily, and were stopped by a pair of masked men as they passed a nearby Target. The two men led the trio behind the store and mugged them. Police used mall surveillance tapes to retrace the robbers' steps after the crime, and were able to recover some stolen goods, including a wallet.

A bunch of stupid emo kids came in to Toys R Us today to pick up their PS3's.

I guess they just turned 18, don't have a job, but their parents are rich.

They said they were just selling them on eBay.

Now here's the question, if your parents are so rich that they just give you money anytime you want. Why waste time camping outside a store to get money that your parents would've given to you anyways?

Oh and I saw some 60GB PS3 go for $19,000 on eBay. I hope it was a non-bidder.

Gainesville, TX - Reports from CAG electroslag are that a shooting took place at the local Walmart while people were waiting for the PS3 to go on sale @ midnight. He also reports that the police department is interviewing people in line, and is promising pictures. Since the topic was posted, electroslag has posted pictures showing the police outside of the Wal-Mart in Gainesville, which can be found in the links thread below.

Lexington, KY - reports from CAG Dead of Knight via GamesAreFun that a car drove past the Best Buy with someone firing from a BB gun.

Elk Grove, CA - reported by CAG Roufuss via CBS13.com of a robbery of a area Gamestop where several PS3 systems and XBox 360 systems were stolen.

Eugene, OR - reported in another thread by CAG Chacrana via KMTR News 16 of three men who were robbed at gunpoint while waiting for a PS3.

New York City, NY - reported on the Playboy Blog as well as the website of the New York Post, there have been reports of scuffles at the Sony store in Times Square while waiting on the PS3 to go on sale.

Fresno, CA - reported below by CAG MSUHitman, rioting broke out at the Best Buy in River Park (I actually have been to this store) after the crowd of 50 people waiting in line for a PS3 were told there would be only 35 units available for sale. The crowd bumrushed the store entrance according to reports from KMPH 59, forcing the store manager to flee and close the shutters blocking the entrance, then calling police. Fresno police then called the line an "unlawful gathering" and ordered the line to disperse, using batons on those who didn't obey the officer's commands. CAG zewone has posted cell phone clips detailing the experience outside when the police showed up in Scorch's thread.

Boston, MA - reported below by CAG lordwow, the Best Buy at Landmark Centre was forced to close down their midnight PS3 launch by the Boston Police Dept, citing public safety concerns and paperwork that had not been filed at the office of Mayor Thomas Menino. This is a good thing in my opinion because it prevents fellow gamers from getting hurt.

Putnam, CT - reported below by CAG Monsta Mack, Connecticut state police have confirmed one person was shot overnight at the local Wal-Mart while waiting in line to purchase the PS3. The person shot has not had his condition released to the media at this time, but it has been confirmed by the AP and WTNH.com.

Wayne County, MI - a witness account from CAG the3rdkey has stated his brother has been arrested for making threats to the staff of the local Toys R Us when said brother attempted to purchase 12 PS3s.

Englewood, OH - reported below by CAG jezebelseven. Local police are looking for two men who held up a local EB Games and took 5 PS3 units according to WHIO-7 TV.

West Bend, WI - reported by CAG MSUHitman, a customer racing to the front of a Wal-Mart to buy a PS3 was injured when he was pushed into a flagpole by another customer. Said customer is currently hospitalized with a dislocated jaw amongst other injuries, meanwhile the person who pushed the aforementioned customer was not arrested and not charged with a crime.

Manchester, CT - reported by CAG LinkinPrime, a customer who walked out of an EB Games was surrounded by five men, and then was beaten and his PS3 stolen.

Wilmington, NC - reported by CAG StingerMCK, a person who bought a PS2 from a local Walmart was surrounded by four men, who proceeded to hit him with a blunt object and stole his PS3.
