View Full Version : Conan O'Brien fighting fire with fire?

Has anyone else noticed that Conan O'Brien is doing more political sketches recently? Conan has never shied away from politics, but it seems he's utilising political satire more. I'm not complaining, Conan's political skits are hilarious. Remember the one where he showed all the people the Republicans labelled "Democrats". The allegorical sketch he did last night was fantastic, as well.

I think the reason for all this realpolitiking is primarily to try and ease the edge Jon Steward and the Daily Show criminally have over Late Night. I think Conan is angling for that Emmy next year, and I wish him luck in getting it, as I enjoy Conan's politcal humour more.

Am I the only one who's noticed this? What do you think Conan's chances are taking on Stewart and his writers in the political game? Is Conan just trying to change the direction of his show, and do something different with it before he's sentenced to The Tonight Show? Is he trying to build up his audience by reeling in the Stewart/Colbert crowd?

I'm a huge Conan fan, and it's just something I've noticed since the Emmys this year.

Conan is so far ahead of both Colbert and Stewart in entertainment that it is insane.

Definately. Both Stewart and Colbert are extremely overrated, in my opinion. Stewart has never said anything remotely funny. And the whole political thing makes it easy. Hold a mirror up to the Bush Administration and it's comedy gold. It doesn't take a genius to do what he's doing.

Conan has been robbed the last few years at the Emmys.

Don't hate on Stewart.

As much as I love Stewart and Colbert, Jimmy Steele is right... neither one of them could hold a candle to Conan.

As nice as it would be to win the emmy.... Conan is getting the Tonight Show... nothing tops that.... just ask Dave.

Colbert is hilarious..

I haven't watched enough of him to second this, but I can say that what I have seen has made him look 100x better than Stewart.

Stewart is awesome. As good as Conan is, often it feels as if he's trying too hard. That's just me, though.

We only get the daily show in the UK on a 24 hour delay, I saw Colbert in the mid term mid tacular and he was fucking hilarious.

Colbert's act gets old quickly IMO.

Conan is gold.

I love Stewart however.

Dave is still King IMO.

and Leno just is NOT funny.

I used to find Leno funny, but he hasn't been for like a decade or so.

I'll still take him over O'Brien probably, as his show stopped being really funny to me when Richter left. I haven't watched either lately, but they both seem to try really hard with no results.

Actually, the only thing I like on either show is the band. Well, assuming Kevin's still heading the Tonight Show band and the Max Weinberg Seven is still on Late Night.

Colbert is great. He's really taken off into his own, and his style holds up.

Stewart is more laid back funny, which I really like anyway. Plus, anyone who says "fucking retarded" or "batshit crazy" on TV is good with me.

Not a fan of Connan. If he's changed like you say, maybe he's worth watching.

Stewart is hilarious sometimes, but I find a lot of his political satire a bit too obvious and samey tbh

I'd love to see Conan do the Oscars.

Ellen's doing it this year, I actually think she's pretty funny. Looking forward to it. :y:

Ellen's funny, but lately she's made me want to put a boot in her ass.

Colbert >>> Leno > Connan > Stewart > Ellen > flabby whale dick > Letterman.

TOVO Fact: Tovo threw a party the first night the Colbert Report aired.

Meh, Leno makes me laugh, and honestly the only funny thing Dave has ever done is Top Tens. And even there, those are hit and miss.

TOVO Fact: Tovo has been in the Tonight Show's audience 4 times.

Did you ever see the Have I Got News for You with him and Jonathan Aitken on it?

Some of the best television I've ever seen without a doubt.

wtf. Stewart and Colbert are both awesome, retards.

Conan is still miles ahead of everyone else, but that doesn't mean Stewart and Colbert suck.

I never watch Conan O'Brien. What station and time is he on? - Maybe I'll try to catch it. (probably way past my bedtime)

I look at Conan's show as completely different than Daily Show or Colbert Report. Conan is an entertainment show, focusing on movies, music, pop culture, the other two are political shows. If you are talking about who does better in terms political humor, it's not Conan. As far as the overall quality of the show, he probably wins. I still don't think he is as amazing as given credit for.
