View Full Version : Why do I still watch this...

Before I start, a quick note to any mod out there- Feel free to move this to the casual forum if you think it deals too much with my personal life, and not enough with wrestling.

I can honestly say I’ve been watching wrestling for 20 years. I’ve seen matches that made me jump out of my seat when I still believed it was real, and matches that give me the same response albeit I know it’s predetermined. I’ve been caught up with story lines that made me part of the excitement when I knew it was real, and I’ve seen promos that make me question how much of it isn’t real. Then again, on the flip side of things, I’ve also sat through and watched a lot of crap. So the question remains, why do I sit through two hours every Monday (most Fridays, and sometimes Thursday if I’m not doing anything else)?
As of late watching Monday Night Raw has been nothing more than a chore. Yea, there have been some good times, and some bad times, yet nothing that made me want to turn it off. I guess this is what you could call loyalty. My older brother loves the Oakland Raiders, and he’ll watch every single moment of every single game if they were always getting the crap beaten out of them in every game.
As a fan, wrestling means a lot to me. At one point in my life it was the only thing I had in common with one of my brothers, I was able to make some friends who are very close to me because we were all wrestling fans, and I even had a few conversations with my great uncle when he was still alive about when he was watching wrestling.

This is the normal set up for how I watch Raw…
There’s myself. An avid wrestling fan who wants to learn more about the history of the show, who watches it to be entertained, not to point out bad spots, sloppy moves, loose holds, plot holes, messy bumps, or anything else negative whenever it happens.
Then there are three other people who seem to make it their goal to pick apart the show while I’m sitting there, trying to enjoy it. Two of them are roommates, one of them is one of my roommate’s younger brother… Lemme talk about the brother for a moment.
ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, OCD, and a handful of other mental disorders. He’s older than me, but he has the mindset of a child. I’m not going to say anything bad about him because when it’s his time to go there’s going to be a special place saved for him… Bless his soul…. (there was a stand up comic that said you can say the worst things possible about a person as long as you start it off with “bless his soul”)… With his mind set he likes to annoy people. It’s not his fault. Personally I blame God. Every week I hear nothing but “So when is Ric Flair going to die?” or “Ric Flair should be dead by now.” or “Mr. Perfect isn’t perfect, he’s dead like Owen and Eddie.” He laughs at the end, and I don’t have the heart to tell him to shut the fuck up. It’s not his fault that he’s pretty much retarded. He was there when I heard that Earthquake died, he was there when I heard Lou Thez died, and he saw me cry over Eddie.

Raw Spoilers ahead. Highlight to read.
Tonight’s Raw was pretty good. I loved the bit with HBK talking about the party plans, and DX sending The Spirit Squad back to OVW. Edge/Orton vs. The Hardys was alright, and the thing with Cryme Time is always funny. I’m looking forward to Victoria vs. Mickie James for the women’s title, since they’re the two best female wrestlers on the roster right now… But I’d like to talk about The Cutting Edge right now.
Everyone who I watch wrestling with knows how much I respect and admire Ric Flair. For everything he has done, and all the bullshit he has endured, all in the name of entertaining us. No, he’s not in his heyday, but he’s in the ring more often than The Undertaker, more active in the ring than Orton, and better behind the mic than damn near anyone else on the roster today. That segment could have been the most emotional segment for me in years. I was about ready to just yell “WHAT THE FUCK!!!!” at my tv. But what happened? I had three inconsiderate people talk during it. Three people who know how much respect I have for everyone who has laced a pair of boots in the name of putting on a show. Three people who know that I put Ric Flair on a pedestal.
End Spoilers

Three people who wouldn’t shut up during the segment, and then had the audacity to ask me “what’s wrong” when they wouldn’t shut up, or shut up about asking me what’s wrong. What’s wrong is every week I don’t want to hear about how Ric Flair should be dead by now, and I don’t want to hear how a spot was blown as if these other people who I’m with could do it better. Yes, we all know Randy Orton uses more rest holds than my grandma needs rest stops on a drive that’s more than two hours long. That’s the only thing we agree on but I’d rather try to figure out the ring psychology before I say he’s just lazy. If someone hasn’t seen a drop kick in a while that means they just aren’t watching, and The Hardy Boys were called The Hardy Boys and there never was a law suit with the publisher of the Hardy Boys books so stop acting like you know what you’re talking about…

Yea, so I have three people who are sucking everything good about wrestling away from me while I’m trying to enjoy it. Yea, I can look back at a match from time to time cringe when someone takes a nasty, unintentional spill. I can talk about why the match was crappy, but let’s save it for after the match. These people do not have any consideration for the one person who wants to actually watch the show, let alone respect for everyone who is trying to put it on (of course I'm only talking about the people in the ring, not the writers right now).

…God damn, I am so annoyed right now. Not really looking for any advice about what to do . Next week I’m just watching it in my room. I just had to vent. This is something that has been building up for months now.

So thanks for reading this if you did, I just had to blow off some steam. If you didn't read it, I couldn't care less.

Maybe just....stop watching it with them?

Seriously, are you telling me that, considering the absolute shit booking that's been going on in the WWE for quite a while, the thing that would turn you off it is some comments from people who don't like it?

You try hearing on a weekly basis that someone you look up to should be dead by now, from someone who you can't yell at because God didn't deal him a full deck, in an attempt to get under you skin, for months on end, and tell me how easy it is.

Besies, in the end I did say that I'm just going to watch it in my room. Maybe I should have mentioned that everyone watches it in the living room.

I wouldnt let that bother you, of all things. For everything you like, theres always gonna be someone who doesn't like it. People have different opinions and like different things. Thats what makes us people. Sometimes its even your friends. If hes your idol then hes your idol and it shouldnt change things.
Millions of people have religions they believe in, despite the fact that millions of others dont believe it and in some cases would like to see them dead.
Did people stop worshiping Jesus because everybody wanted him dead?
I'm not religious and I don't know why I'm ranting but what I'm trying to say is who cares. Don't let it bother you and keep watching, in the other room if need be.

I wouldn't dare watch wrestling with my friends.

They'd make me see the light.

I still watch wrestling with my friends sometimes.

...Rarely.

...Mostly if they're over here and it happens to be on and we're REALLY bored.

These days, I just watch HEroes.

I remember when my cousin and i watched wrestling when i first started watching and he always used to go 'oh thats so fake!' all the time.
I'm glad i dont watch wrestling with other people, i know its fake for fuck sake, but i watch it for the story/rivalries/music etc...and these same people will go and watch some shitty soap like eastenders, which is even faker than wrestling!

A friend of mine kept doing that.

When we were watching movies, I responded in kind.

I think he got the point.

Except at the moment, there are no rivalries, the storylines are god awful and even the entrance music doesn't seem all that good anymore. Edge & Ortons music sounds absolutely awful, like some kid could do on ytmd.com, Kennedy's music is 'generic wrestling theme 2' from SD vs Raw, and I know they're extremists and all, but the music is extremely fucking boring. Even 'the next big wrist thing' CM Punk's theme is terrible.

^ That's an extremely negative view you've taken, and slightly biased. Ofcourse there are rivlaries/storylines, check smackdown/ecw for that...
But look at it this way, people still watch eastenders when it goes to shit and rehashes the same old storylines over and over and then they criticise us for not being able to quit watching wrestling when infact we watch the shows for the same reasons.

Fo'Fittay has a point. That segment was really graphic and fucked up (reminded me of old raw, to be fair) and I did get a little "OMG" about the entire thing. But still I can imagine people going "LOL, ITZ SO FAKEZORZ" and me wanting to fucking slap them across the teeth.

I'd say don't watch it with them but maybe reevaluate why you watch. You know it's shit right now with no signs of improving. You said it's a chore to watch and I feel the same way. I odnt' enjoy watching it,i just do.

Not to offend you or anything BUT, if Ric Flair is your idol you may want to re evaluate your life. Yeah he's a great performer, you respect him and all that jazz, but, he is just a character, from all accounts he is a dick in person, hell, Ric Flair isn't even his real name. So if a fictional character is the person you look up to I dont' know what that says about you. People look up to Superman and I understand why, but usually not after the age of 10. Again, not to offend and I'm not judging you, just think about that.

Oh, and that Flair/Edge/Orton segment was probably the most useless thing I've seen in a long time on a wrestling show.

By the way, I think the title's kind of rhetorical. If you're getting upset because of the disrespect here, then...
