Before I start, a quick note to any mod out there- Feel free to move this to the casual forum if you think it deals too much with my personal life, and not enough with wrestling.
I can honestly say I’ve been watching wrestling for 20 years. I’ve seen matches that made me jump out of my seat when I still believed it was real, and matches that give me the same response albeit I know it’s predetermined. I’ve been caught up with story lines that made me part of the excitement when I knew it was real, and I’ve seen promos that make me question how much of it isn’t real. Then again, on the flip side of things, I’ve also sat through and watched a lot of crap. So the question remains, why do I sit through two hours every Monday (most Fridays, and sometimes Thursday if I’m not doing anything else)?
As of late watching Monday Night Raw has been nothing more than a chore. Yea, there have been some good times, and some bad times, yet nothing that made me want to turn it off. I guess this is what you could call loyalty. My older brother loves the Oakland Raiders, and he’ll watch every single moment of every single game if they were always getting the crap beaten out of them in every game.
As a fan, wrestling means a lot to me. At one point in my life it was the only thing I had in common with one of my brothers, I was able to make some friends who are very close to me because we were all wrestling fans, and I even had a few conversations with my great uncle when he was still alive about when he was watching wrestling.
This is the normal set up for how I watch Raw…
There’s myself. An avid wrestling fan who wants to learn more about the history of the show, who watches it to be entertained, not to point out bad spots, sloppy moves, loose holds, plot holes, messy bumps, or anything else negative whenever it happens.
Then there are three other people who seem to make it their goal to pick apart the show while I’m sitting there, trying to enjoy it. Two of them are roommates, one of them is one of my roommate’s younger brother… Lemme talk about the brother for a moment.
ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, OCD, and a handful of other mental disorders. He’s older than me, but he has the mindset of a child. I’m not going to say anything bad about him because when it’s his time to go there’s going to be a special place saved for him… Bless his soul…. (there was a stand up comic that said you can say the worst things possible about a person as long as you start it off with “bless his soul”)… With his mind set he likes to annoy people. It’s not his fault. Personally I blame God. Every week I hear nothing but “So when is Ric Flair going to die?” or “Ric Flair should be dead by now.” or “Mr. Perfect isn’t perfect, he’s dead like Owen and Eddie.” He laughs at the end, and I don’t have the heart to tell him to shut the fuck up. It’s not his fault that he’s pretty much retarded. He was there when I heard that Earthquake died, he was there when I heard Lou Thez died, and he saw me cry over Eddie.
Raw Spoilers ahead. Highlight to read.
Tonight’s Raw was pretty good. I loved the bit with HBK talking about the party plans, and DX sending The Spirit Squad back to OVW. Edge/Orton vs. The Hardys was alright, and the thing with Cryme Time is always funny. I’m looking forward to Victoria vs. Mickie James for the women’s title, since they’re the two best female wrestlers on the roster right now… But I’d like to talk about The Cutting Edge right now.
Everyone who I watch wrestling with knows how much I respect and admire Ric Flair. For everything he has done, and all the bullshit he has endured, all in the name of entertaining us. No, he’s not in his heyday, but he’s in the ring more often than The Undertaker, more active in the ring than Orton, and better behind the mic than damn near anyone else on the roster today. That segment could have been the most emotional segment for me in years. I was about ready to just yell “WHAT THE FUCK!!!!” at my tv. But what happened? I had three inconsiderate people talk during it. Three people who know how much respect I have for everyone who has laced a pair of boots in the name of putting on a show. Three people who know that I put Ric Flair on a pedestal.
End Spoilers
Three people who wouldn’t shut up during the segment, and then had the audacity to ask me “what’s wrong” when they wouldn’t shut up, or shut up about asking me what’s wrong. What’s wrong is every week I don’t want to hear about how Ric Flair should be dead by now, and I don’t want to hear how a spot was blown as if these other people who I’m with could do it better. Yes, we all know Randy Orton uses more rest holds than my grandma needs rest stops on a drive that’s more than two hours long. That’s the only thing we agree on but I’d rather try to figure out the ring psychology before I say he’s just lazy. If someone hasn’t seen a drop kick in a while that means they just aren’t watching, and The Hardy Boys were called The Hardy Boys and there never was a law suit with the publisher of the Hardy Boys books so stop acting like you know what you’re talking about…
Yea, so I have three people who are sucking everything good about wrestling away from me while I’m trying to enjoy it. Yea, I can look back at a match from time to time cringe when someone takes a nasty, unintentional spill. I can talk about why the match was crappy, but let’s save it for after the match. These people do not have any consideration for the one person who wants to actually watch the show, let alone respect for everyone who is trying to put it on (of course I'm only talking about the people in the ring, not the writers right now).
…God damn, I am so annoyed right now. Not really looking for any advice about what to do . Next week I’m just watching it in my room. I just had to vent. This is something that has been building up for months now.
So thanks for reading this if you did, I just had to blow off some steam. If you didn't read it, I couldn't care less.
