SUPER BOWL XLI GOES HIGH DEFINITION
Tuesday 19th December 2006

Sky Sports will broadcast the Super Bowl in high definition for the first time in February.

One of the world’s most spectacular sports events will be screened with four times the picture quality of standard transmission and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for HD subscribers.

Super Bowl XLI will be the first US sports event and the sixth sport to be screened in HD by Sky Sports with the first Super League match in HD also on 4th February 2007.

The Super Bowl is famed for its spectacular pre-game and halftime shows with Prince set to appear in Miami, and previous performers including U2, Sir Paul McCartney and Justin Timberlake.

Super Bowl XLI will be the climax of the busiest ever season of NFL on Sky Sports, with live coverage of up to four regular season matches each weekend, Thanksgiving match-ups and NFL Network games plus every playoff game.

Sky Sports re-affirmed its commitment to the sport with a new 4-year deal announced in September for live games and support programming.

HD has been described as the biggest development in television since the change from black and white to colour.

The first HD sports broadcast in the UK was Sky Sports' coverage of England B vs Belarus B on 24th May, followed by HD coverage of the international and domestic cricket season, Barclays Premiership, UEFA Champions League and Coca Cola League football, Guinness Premiership and international Rugby Union and The 36th Ryder Cup.

There have already been over 100 live outside broadcasts in HD across the high definition services Sky Sports HD1, Sky Sports HD2 and PremPlus HD with over 25 HD broadcasts in February 2007 alone.

The Sky HD box costs £299 with a £10 per month subscription, in addition to the regular Sky digital subscription, for viewing the Sky HD channels.

The Super Bowl will also be shown in standard definition on Sky Sports alongside the HD coverage.

Sky HD currently offers 12 high definition channels: Sky Sports HD 1, Sky Sports HD 2, Sky Box Office 1 HD, Sky Box Office 2 HD, Sky Movies 9 HD, Sky Movies 10 HD, Sky One HD, Artsworld HD, National Geographic HD, Discovery HD, The History Channel HD and the non subscription BBC HD trail channel plus additional live football matches on PREMPLUS HD

Great news. Gonna love seeing this in High Def on my Sony Bravia. :D Hopefully the regular season games will be in HD next year too.
