View Full Version : Wii Question

Okay, does the Wii come with backwards compatability with the Gamecube? Will my Wavebirds and such work with it out of the box, and same with the memory cards?
I'm in a position to snag one, and would be more interested in doing so if everything on my Cube will work fine. Basically, I'm more interested if I can replace my Cube entirely.
I seem to remember the DVD functions required a separate unit (Which is no longer coming out?), but I'd lke to make sure nothing else would be an issue.

Oh, the question's less about backwards compatability, and more about BC right out of the box. I know it's BC. Just checking I don't have to spend a lot to do so.
The DVD functions are being released in another version of the console to be out in about a year.

Okay, is that the only other feature on that one?
I have a DVD player, so if it is, I doubt I'd care one way or another.

The Wii is a fully functioning Game Cube right out of the box, your Wave bird's, memory cards, and games will work just like they do on your cube the moment you hook up the Wii.
And from what I've read, the DVD add on will only be sold in Japan.

The side flap, as seen here:

Opens to have memory card and controller port for the game cube. You wont have to buy anything.

Yeah, unlike Sony's monstrosity, the Wii is 100% backwards compatible with no problems reported with any games or peripherals at all.
No 200 - 300 GC games not working here. But as much as I love the GC, the big question is "Are there actually 200 - 300 games out for the GC in total?"...:shifty:

There are about 10 I even like. ;)
Still, I'd very much like to keep my DoR, Skies, and Rogue Squadron titles playable.

If that's the case, then play on. No problems have been reported with any of the GC titles as far as I'm aware, and I've never seen those titles mentioned in any random Wii problems that have come up (not even concerning backwards compatibility).

The only thing, is that you can't have a Gamecube controller plugged in when selecting to play a Gamecube game in the main Wii menu. Or anything in the Wii menu for that matter. When a Gamecube controller is plugged in, the Wii won't recognize the Wiimote. You have to select the game with the Wiimote, then when the game starts, plug in the Gamecube controller. It's only slightly annoying.

I have never had a problem with this. In fact, I will plug in my Gamecube controllers first and load up the Wii and then use my Wiimote to "Press A to start."
Good to see UmbrellaCorporation bringing up Sony seeing as how this question couldn't be answered until someone brings up their mistakes.

Dunno if it's because I use a Wavebird which isn't usually switched on until the game loads, but I don't have this problem.

Yeah, let's not mention the 360's AMAZING emulation capabilities.

I'm glad to find everyone but Dorkchop is saying this isn't normal. Makes things a little less annoying.
You still have to use the Wii remote to select the game to start and all but you could leave your Gamecube controller plugged in all the time and just use it when you are playing the game.

Right. That doesn't bother me much though. It's just having to plug and unplug my controllers that often. It's not laziness, but I am forgetful and would have to have to keep powerng on and off my system for shit like this...Not to mention there's probably some wear on the ports if you have to keep jacking it in and out.

Yeah, the wavebird's asskicking is limited only by the console itself.

I just tried it and it worked fine. I had this problem a few times, I thought it was normal. Good to know I don't have this problem anymore.

Now all I need to do is find one.
A local Gamestop got in some today but they sold out in about 20 minutes. They did, however, say that they were expecting plenty more soon and it would probably be much easier to find one.

I expect it to be hard to find, this being the 26th and all. I'll just keep going back.

I finally got to play with one at my cousin's house, we played Wii Sports, the remote is pretty awesome, it didn't feel awkward. I can't wait to try some other games on it. I'm gonna try to pick one up soon.

Just got one. Had to drive to Keene, but it's only like 30 minutes each way. Fourth Store had it.
