View Full Version : The Wire
Man I dunno why it took me so long to start watching this show, I've only watched a couple of episodes but already I'm hooked:y:

Pretty much HBO's best show. Ever. The writing is fucking top notch every single episode, the acting is brilliant. So much better than Sopranos. Season 4 was fucking AMAZING. I'm so glad HBO is giving it another season.
Damn shame this show never gets recognized for any awards. Pisses me off.
Yeah I read an article about how basically HBO commissioned another show despite dreadful viewing figures, just because the show is of such quality, its a shame other networks don't follow suit, then maybe there'd be more people watching this kinda thing
Ya ok me and Boondock cannot possibly be the only two people here who are fans of the best show on television:rant:

So The Wire is finally getting a UK terrestrial showing on BBC2, starting next monday. I've heard good things so I'm looking forward to it.
Easily the best show of the last 10-20 years. Watch it:y:

yea, I literally finished the series within 3 months late last year. awesome awesome show. The Wire, Sopranos, 24 and Lost are like my top 4 favorite non sitcom shows ever.
The Wire is probably the most real to life shows you'll ever watch
Yeah, the intricacy of it is astounding, and it is quite demanding of its viewers, very little done in the show to explain what has gone before aside from any 'previously on...' that might get tacked on at the beginning. So it isn't something you can watch half heartedly and truly appreciate, but when you do, oh man.

I am just about finished watching the first season - fucking amazing show.
One thing I know for sure, I never want to go to Baltimore

Ya I watched it all in a huge block about a month ago. Awesome stuff.
'nunder the show gets way better than S1. I mean waaaaaaaaaay better. Also Baltimore is oddly similar to parts of Liverpool.
Yeah Baltimore hugely reminds me of Liverpool actually
No this is one of my top 5 shows of all time. I've only gotten through the first 2 seasons but i have season 3 downloaded and waiting. Just not enough time to watch them with all the Lost and 24 going on. I'm like 4 ep's behind on 24.
McNulty is amazing. Way underused in season 2 though. He better get more tv time in the next 3 seasons. Love the fat black cop too. He's hilarious. Him and McNulty are perfect.
It really is a damn shame they ended the series.

my favorite character on the show is Boadie. I hated the kid in the beginnning, but grew to love him as he didn't back down from Marlo towards the end. My favorite scene had to be
the scene where Boadie got killed off by O-Dogg. You watch that scene and he knew he was in deep shit and he stood his ground. The final conversation between him and Poot where Poot is begging him to run and Boadie shakes his head no was amazing. Such a tragic scene and character.

yea, McNulty was great and his partner was Bunk. I had no idea that the actor playing McNulty is British. lol
This or The West Wing for my favourite show ever I think, must redownload them all again and start again actually.

I'm majorly pacing myself with The Wire - I got all 5 seasons on DVD in the January sales and so far I've only watched the first season. Fantastic stuff.
Any UK-ers who've not seen it definitely need to watch it on BBC 2.

Say what?
Boadie was killed by Michael
:?:
Incorrect MMM, common misconception, not entirely sure why as Chris Partlow specifically advises against that particular course of action.
Don't think there was a spoiler there...
Loose Cannon
03-23-2009, 03:50 PM
No, that wasn't Mike. Trust me, I rewound the scene plenty of times, froze it and zoomed in cause I thought the same thing. i even looked online and people confirmed it was O-Dogg. O-Dogg was the other soilder that was shot in the leg by Omar towards the end
Actually, it made sense because Chris said to Marlo earlier in the episode that he tought Mike's first kill should not be someone he knew
Mr. Monday Morning
03-23-2009, 04:52 PM
Hm, just watched it again and you might be right. It's not very clear, just watching it at full speed you don't see his full face. It just seemed a natural continuation of Michael's character, I guess. I wanted him dead after that  :'(
Then again if it wasn't him it fits more with how he eventually ends up, I guess.

Yeah brilliant scene. That one and McNulty and Bunk at the Window murder scene are probably the most iconic of the first season IMO.

Such a great show. Easily the best show of the last 25 years, and arguably ever.
But probably my favourite collection of scenes come toward the end of season 3 basically the break down between Avon and Stringer. From when Stringer finally reveals he was behind D'Angelos 'suicide' to Avon, so fucking intense, to his decision to give Avon up to Colvin, their scene reminiscing overlooking the Harbour, Stringers death, Avon's human side showing through again with his sorrow over it and his realisation of the absurdity of their whole situation, and finally with McNulty revealing the source of the information leading to his arrest and his hardened attitude returning when being taken down
Dunno, amazing.
Ps, hugely ridiculous spoilers there, I have clearly indicated that it is related to season 3, if you haven't seen season 3, please do not reveal what I've written and then complain.
Yeah thats that I'm buying the boxset tomorrow Ill only end up redownloading it again and again otherwise
Starts on BBC tongiht for the UK people. 1 episode a night for all 5 seasons. Get your Sky+ on the job.

Be lucky to fit the entire thing on Sky Plus though, so you'll have to make sure you've at least started watching some of it before the run ends. :p
Just stick with it for a few episodes if it doesn't immediately grip you and it soon will.

The Wire is one of my favourite shows. I don't think it quite tops Oz, nor does it beat a sentimental favourite like Dexter, but The Wire deserves its greatness etched in history.
Beautiful show.

Oh god just finished season 2 tonight after starting the entire show about a week ago.
This is amazing.
Season 1 was a bit "slow", like it was just "OK" to me until about episode 7 or 8 when things all started coming together and I got to know all the characters and whatnot. Like really "rewarded my patience" at the end. And season 2 was fucking sick all around because I knew what to expect in terms of the pacing and whatnot.
Amazing show.

Did ne1 else like season 2 better than season 1 or was it just because I knew what to expect / knew it would be good, when I was a bit skeptical during season 1?

Yeah I have heard that a lot actually. I really liked all the dock stuff honestly. But if the rest of the seasons are even better then whoooooo
Just about to start Season 5 on my 3rd rerun of the show I think. Just so fantastically fantatsic. I don't think season 2 is neccescarily weaker, I didn't like it at first watch as I was kind of thinking of The Wire as a just a show about the police and drug dealers when its more of a social commentary on the entire of Baltimore and I didn't appreciate that until it branched into more areas as the other seasons progreessed.
Plus drug dealers always going to be cooler than dock workers.

"Spoilers":
Love the end of season 1. How they just showed a montage of how pointless the whole operation was, and everything pretty much just went back to business as usual. Bubs and all the "fiends" still doing/buying drugs, Stringer Bell taking over, etc.

I loved Season 1.

I just finished season 2 today. The last two Saturdays I've nursed a hangover and watched The Wire all day. Season 1 and 2 were nothing short of fantastic. I haven't been this into a show since... well... ever. It's fucking amazing.
Downloading Season 3 now. Finally. Had other shows to catch up on. Got some House seasons in. Rewatches some Lost season 1 and 2.
Now i'm bout to catch on my 3rd favorite show of all time. The Wire.
Seasons 3 and 4 are the best for me, 4 in particular is just...Deep, and so complex, but so worth it.

I dunno, the season's before Stanfield just dragged to me. But I think I was spoiled with Omar/Barkesdale War in season 1 that I wanted more of that. That's why I loved the whole Stanfield/Barkesdale War in the later season's. And Season 2 was great because it was different and went to another area of Baltimore.

Halfway through season 4 now also. Fucking amazing.
I literally just finished the last 2 episodes of season 3 an hour ago and when i get home in the morning, i'll have a review of the whole season. Lets just say...this was epic television.

I'm not a huge fan of S2 but it is very important in the whole overall scheme of things. Key, actually.
Finished this finally last night after putting off watching forever. Can't really say anything that hasn't already been said in here. Just jawdropping. I was ready to download the first few eps of Oz and start watching that but Rapidshare being a cunt atm and reading through this thread means I might just start The Wire again :o

Oh, how naive I was. A bit later on I realised that The Wire is the best show ever. Bar none. It endears itself into your soul, and becomes part of life that you just cannot ignore. Fucking amazing.
I'm going over the show again, and I am noticing so much about it. For example: Cedric Daniels and Rhonda Pearlman long allude to their eventual relationship.
It's just stuff like that which truly lets this show do such a whole number on you.

I finally ordered the box set a few weeks ago. It's fucking hard to watch just one episode of this. Last Saturday night I piled through half of season 1 in one go. It's a ridiculously engrossing TV show. All I've been doing this week is studying then rewarding myself with a couple of episodes, burned through season 2 this week too.

I just finished watching the series a few weeks ago. Felt the same way about only watching one episode.
I've watched it through in its entirety twice now, and the first 4 seasons about 3 times each on top of that. Still notice new things I never did before, and still find it impossible to watch just one.

05-15-2010, 03:31 PM
Yeah watching through again. So unbelievably good.
Really transcends from a television show to an important aspect of life.
I just finished season four. Probably some of the greatest acting and writing I've ever seen in anything. There are so many great characters on this show. I don't think I have hated another fictional character as much as Snoop while watching this show.
the only thing i hated about season 4 was there was not enough McNulty
I was thinking the same thing actually. His character was wasted until the end, even more than Bunk was in season 3. For the most part they do a nice job juggling the characters with storylines, especially considering how many characters they have to give air time to.

Desperate to go through this again but I've been refusing to and will continue to until I buy the boxset. I have the first 3 or 4 seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street (features writing by David Simon, based on his book etc) downloaded that I might start soon and this is the closest thing to a thread for it since I'm not about to start a new one. Similar at all? Does it come close? (obviously it won't be as good) Worth watching?

Bought the first three seasons and they sat on my shelf for about a year and a half before I got round to watching them. Flew through them once I started.
Amazing show. I've watched it start to finish twice now and I'd say it won't be long before I start watching it again.
That fourth season is absolutely amazing. Which surprised me because when I saw the emphasis was going to be on the kids I thought it might suffer. Couldn't have been more wrong.

So I'm just getting to this thread, and reading through it I see that you all echo the same sentiment that I felt/feel when it comes to this show. What a gripping, epic piece of work by all parties involved.
Also the Death of Omar is meant to be as trivial as it is, as nobody is bigger than the Game/Baltimore
