why it doesnt: good performances by Donald Sutherland, Tom Siezmore, and pretty much the entire cast - even Stalone isn't too terrible. suprisingly human storylines.

also, it's full of classic lines.

why it doesn't suck: while the first 15 minutes of the movie start off like typical bad action movie crap, once it enters the prison, the movie becomes suprisingly brutal and realistic. some very good fight scenes. they seem like some real MMA fights. no spinning round house kicks in this movie. probably Van Damme's best performance. the movie is suprisingly brutal and suprisingly entertaining.
