Starting from the Royal Rumble to WrestleMania
Which year got the most hype? Was it Austin in 98?
I'd say my favorite had to be the Mania 14 (98) buildup. It was pretty awesome. I love the shot when they did an outside press conference with the ring. Austin was tied up and Michaels was rubbing the belt in his face yelling (something like) "YOU'LL NEVER GET THIS!"
But yeah, that was my overall favorite.

I'm gonna reach way back and say the 94 Rumble to Wrestlemania X as being my favorite. Most hype, not sure on that. I remember Wrestlemania 2000 getting tons of hype starting with the Rock/Big Show (I think this was the first time a Rumble winner put his mania spot up at No Way Out), then Foley being added right after "retiring", and the McMahon in every corner.

2000 was pretty sweet
Back then I was newb mark and I HATED seeing Big Show whenever he would complain about his rumble elimination  I think I despised Shane even more

Uh, Shawn Michaels put his Royal Rumble title shot on the line against Owen Hart at the February In Your House way back in 1996.

Easily this year. Especially with Tyson's terrible renditions of the crotch chop.

Austin in 1998 probably but my personal favorite is WrestleMania XX because I'm such a Benoit mark.

They rank up there with Shawn's "I'm not doing a crotch chop, see? I'm Xing my stomach!" crotch chop.

98' was my personal favorite, but probably just because I got to go Wrestlemania XIV. I remember liking 99' too. McMahon and the Corporation doing everything they could to keep Austin out of the Main Event, and that cage match with Vince/Austin and the Rock/Foley matches were good too. Plus, the way I remember it, the fans just reacted to every little thing back then. Made for consistently great atmosphere.

Definately 1998. Brilliant.
I remember one episode of RAW, probably the night after the Rumble, and Austin was heading to the back after a match, probably against the Rock or something. Anyway as he went out of the arena Michaels just appeared from behind the curtain and superkicked him. Unreal. Marked out for that one so much.

And without Michaels hitting Taker with a chair. THAT happened at SummerSlam '97, and Bret Hart beat Undertaker as a result of that one.

Austin in 98 for me, I had been a fan of wrestling years before but it was around that time I really started getting into it. Like it is for most others 98 is a very memorable year for me in terms of wrestling.

indeed :y:
Rock was my favorite but then he turned on me and I never forgave him. He could forget about me buying a ticket to his movies after he SOLD OUT. Bad move buddy

I know, I caught that after I posted it. Was going to edit but it was taking forever to load.

Austin in 99 easily. It was a year in the making practically. The survivor series swerve, the foley/rock fueds, the vince/austin cage match, the corporation, the screw jobs, hbk as commish. Everything over the year was leading to that one match, and you could really feel it beginning to pick up momentum after the Royal Rumble. Classic.

I would have picked this but I wasn't even 2 at the time so I couldn't really experience it. God, I so want to go back and watch WWE from like Wrestlemania IV-Summerslam 1992.
Chris Jericho vs. HBK leading up to WrestleMania 19. I loved how they interweaved footage of Jericho's beginnings, mimicking Shawn Michaels. I also liked the angle that created this storyline with Jeff Hardy's losing streak, and HBK helping him get his first win over Christian and Jericho on RAW.
Of course, the match is probably my favorite WM match of all time, so that obviously influences my opinion.
Austin/HBK/Tyson was good too.

IMO i liked WM4...Huge ass roster and of course everyone though Hogan would win it again....WRONG and that set up WM5
Man if the WWE could be that smart again....but then again 5 year old's could come up with somethin more creative than todays writers

Benoit/HHH/Michaels stands out, tho.

The only reason I mention the Jericho one is because he was champion at the time, and I was there for both.

Yeah Mania VIII you had the Flair/Savage "She was mine before she was yours" storyline, you had "Sid Justice wants to ruin what could be Hulk Hogan's last ever match" and the Piper/Bret Hart build-up. Some great angles and interviews building that bad boy up.

I would think as a jerichoholic you would have hated the Jericho/Trips buildup. I found it disgusting because it played second fiddle the nwo storylines, and because it was focused on HHH and Steph while Jericho was just a pawn keeping the title warm.
