WWE ready to rumble on Wii, DS

THQ confirms plans to bring wrestling franchise to Nintendo's systems, reaffirms first PS3 installment in series is on the way.

By Brendan Sinclair (http://uk.gamespot.com/users/Polybren/), GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/) Posted Feb 2, 2007 10:55 am PT

Traditionally, THQ hasn't been shy about spreading its WWE-licensed games around to different platforms. The company has made games based on the professional wrestling company's in-ring offerings for the PlayStation 2, the N-Gage, and everything in between.
However, 2006 was a fairly light year for the company's WWE license because its only major offering was WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 for the PS2, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version had been announced but was later canceled because THQ said the series would debut on Sony's next-generation system in late '07.
The PS3 isn't the only system looking forward to its first WWE game because THQ confirmed plans to step into the ring on the Wii and DS. In an investor conference call, the publisher said it would be releasing WWE products on Nintendo's latest systems sometime in its next fiscal year, which runs from April 2007 through March 2008.
There was no indication if the Nintendo games would fall under the SmackDown! vs. RAW banner, or if they would be separate series, as was done with WWE titles on the GameCube and Game Boy Advance.

Absolutely no other info yet, but as a member of the TPWW Nintendo fanboy legion, I feel that we can speculate about it now.

Whatever they put out for the DS will be crap. Has the WWE ever had a decent handheld game?

Wii might just end up getting another DoR game. At least this time the discs are full sized, so they should be able to put in as many moves and as big a story mode as SvR has.

They'll still cite limits on the system to avoid having to make it as good as SVR. SVR's the flagship wrestling game, and whatever the Wii gets, though it's now the big seller, will probably be secondary or even tertiary.

Horrible loading times aside, I hear the SvR ports on PSP were just like the PS2 version. And I found Road to Wrestlemania X8 the GBA playable, it just suffered from a lack of moves.

WWF Raw for the original Game Boy was pretty awesome.

Wonder if they will incorporate the wiimote as some kind of singapore cane action or something.

I bet it'll be some shit like Betrayal for the DS.

I want it to be so that when I powerbomb my Wiimote through a table, my wrestler on the screen will do the same.

The WWF Superstars games for the original GB were pretty damn good to me.

Finally, In Your House will no longer be the worst wrestling gmae ever! Look out DS and Wii!

I hope both don't suck. Any system now has the potential to have a great wrestling game. I have my doubts, but will wait to find out if they're bad or not.

You're probably right funky it will probably be WWE Day of Reckoning 3 on Wii, because of the main fact that everybody expects such high quality out of the SvR series since it has been around longer if you count not only the SvR titles but also the WWF/E "SmackDown!" titles ... I just worry that the graphics will be only marginally better than the GameCube games, and how the quality of the game will turn out if they try to implement the 'Wii-mote' 's motion-sensing technology into the game for grappling moves...

Well, they will probably do like most games for the Wii have and support both Wiimote and standard controller styles (brilliant idea, btw).

I don't mind so much that the make DoR3. My main issue is whether or not the story mode is as in depth as... No Mercy (if they can't do SvR style story wiith voices.). That and the moveset has to be bigger. There is no excuse for not having an SvR-sized moveset this time. Absolutely none.

But, hopefully with all the space that a Wii disc has on it, you'd think they'd be able to incorporate voiceovers IF the roster isn't too large.

SvRo7's move set is terrible.

I honestly don't care for VO; I can live without it. If every single superstar can't offer enough VO to have their own extensive season mode story-lines than nobody should. Use the extra space for more music choices (multiple themes per superstar; "The Game" and "King of Kings" etc) and more original tracks (though DoR trumped SvR there anyway).

Playing with the Wiimote will work if they apply the same concept that DBZ:BT2 did, which was simply remapping the existing controls to the Wiimote's stock buttons your own gestures.

Don't wanna turn this into a "My Game" thread but I'd have players thrust the Wiimote in the direction of their opponent to attack or grapple them. Add little variations like holding (A) for Irish Whips and you got the jist of what I'd do with it.

Though honestly it'll most likely suck.

Actually, after playing SvR 06, I've come to the conclusion that voice overs are a waste of time and space. Most of the wrestlers are terrible voice actors (even if they are good on the mic :wtf: ) and it cuts down on how much he story can branch out.

SvRo7's move set is terrible.
'Tis why I bought SvR 07

Really, I really don't see a point in voice overs in wrestling games. They limit the story too much. When they say you get "choices", you maybe get four, because there are maybe four different storylines (two starting and two branching off) because of the voice overs.

You want voice overs? Have them record their voices for grunts, groans and trash talk. It would take less space and add more to the game than storyline voice overs.

Hell, for the 360 (I know we're talking Wii/DS here, but whatever) you could use the headset to record your own.

'Tis true. This game's movelist is neutered, and what the fuck is up with actually scaling DOWN CAW options?

Yeah, I don't get the appeal. The voicovers sound shitty, they artificially limit the storylines, and they are repetitive as fuck. The worst part is the in-ring commentary. Not only are the lines corny and horrible, they repeat every five minutes. It's fucking unbearable in GM mode, when you play multiple matches.

Not to mention it chows down on disc space needlessly.

According to http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/760/760982p1.html , it seems that the DS game was at least tentatively titled "WWE Superstar Aggression", so I guess I wasn't too far off on it being like Betrayal.

First pictures of the DS version (I think.)

Not as good as the PSP version, which was to be expected, but I was afraid it was going to look like WWE Aftershock on the N-Gage. It should also lack the horrible load times that plague the PSP version. I noticed the action takes place on the touchscreen, which could mean an interesting control scheme. Probably gonna get this, since all I have now is Road to WrestleMania X8.

I saw those pictures a while ago and I was pretty impressed. Those are pretty sweet graphics for the DS. The only downside to the game is the size of the roster. I don't remember an exact number, but it's going to be pretty small.

I really hope it's a fun game and if there are touch controls they don't feel tacked on. Either make them fun, or don't use them at all.
