Here's a pretty cool site dedicated to lacrosse fights. Some good ones in there. THere's also a few guys I played with and against.

See, you wonder if the NBA had the same style of fight, would it be as big of a problem? In both hockey and I guess now lax, the guys fight and everybody else just stays back. In basketball, it becomes a big brawl between the whole teams.
That said, those fights just kind of seem stupid. Like there is no reason to have a fight like that. They almost seem staged once they have been going on for more than about 30 seconds.

Same with major league baseball, it's all just a nasty brawl.
What separtes lacrosse and hockey fights from other sports most people over look. Those are the only two sports in which you have a weapon in your hand at all times. If football players hit each other with sticks you'd see a lot of one on one fights. Some guy slashes you across the wrist, you or your team "tough guy" will get paypack via fighting. In other sports, there's no real payback to be had, hence the wild bench clearing brawls.
Hockey got into the staged fights a few years ago lacrosse sorta does but you don't see two guys get 1 minute of playing time a game, meet at centre and go at it. Sometimes yes, but not as much as hockey.
It is very very very hard to explain fighting to somebody who's never played in a sport that "allows" it. If the NHL got rid of fighting all togheter, you'd see a lot more stick swinging.

Yesah, and even with "staged" fights, if you wanna call it that, there is a place for them at times. No matter what, it adds to a teams momentum or gets the fans into the game more then they may be. It's also about setting a tone.
But with guys in the NBA etc it's all about their machismo really. They act that way but they're fucking cream puffs. You can tell by the way they "fight".
Besides, fighting in basketball seems out of place considering it's hardly a physical sport.

It's not football or hockey, but basketball is still a very physical sport. Try playing the low-post against Shaq or Ben Wallace and see if you don't get contact.

Yeah, basketball is physical but it's not really supposed to be. A slap on the wrist is a foul, like come on. But yeah, in basketball, two guys start going at it, everybody goes at it.
In hockey and lacrosse fights are used to swing momentum also used to protect your stars because the leagues to a piss poor job of that. If Georges Larouque gets traded to the Pittsburg Penguins like the rumours say, you'll see Sidney Crosbie not get speared anymore.
Football protects it's quarterback, no other sport protects their stars like that so there almost "has to be" fighting.

Georg Larouque is the man. At one point they used to play the Rock's theme when he'd fight. He'd beat someone down and you hear "If you smell what The Rock is coockin"
