View Full Version : WWE Wrestlers who you think could 'MAKE IT' in ROH
Mr. JL

I don't know, bored and I thought of this thread. Alright, name any current WWE wrestlers who you think could 'make it' and get over with the smarky ROH fans.
Ignore the obvious ones like Paul London, Brian Kendrick, CM Punk, Jamie Noble and Jimmy Wang Yang who have already wrestled there time and time again, and proven their worth to the ROH fans countless times.
So name whoever and state why you think they would make it in Ring of Honor and we can comment whether we agree or disagree with your pick(s).
-----
I'll go first and get the VERY obvious one off the list.
CHRIS BENOIT
He would be treated like an absolute God if he ever showed up to wrestle at an ROH event. The countless great matches he's produced in Japan, ECW, WCW, WWF and WWE alone pretty much guarentees that Chris Benoit could 'do no wrong' in the eyes of ROH fans. Add on to the fact that the man can still 'go' and is THE best technical wrestler in the world today. There would be no reason in the world why Benoit would not 'make it' in ROH.

They don't have to hold onto their WWE gimmick and the straight forward WWE style of wrestling if that is what you mean.

Nah, I meant are we saying this as tho they never wrestled on WWE television, or in this scenario do they retain they're recognition.
For instance, if Angle debuted in there and they knew nothing about him, he'd have to get over. However from what they know about him in WWE, they'd mark out like schoolgirls before he ever set foot in the ring.

Sylvan
Okay, I can totally understand Rob Van Dam and Edge being included on the list because they can produce great matches when they want, but nothing I have seen from Sylvan would make me think that he could 'make it'. I've never seen any indy work of his and he seems to be the typical got a good build and look, but no substance WWE sports entertainer quality type wrestler.

I didn't think about it that way, but lets say that they would retain their recognition.

I think Edge would be huge their, not only because he's a great wrestler as it is, and not only because he'd have insentive to let loose more often. But also because of his tremendous persona and mic skills, plus in WWE hes a medium size guy, in ROH he'd be their HHH.

I think Sylvan is a great talent. He could be big if he was treated right.
Obviously, Flair, Michaels, Hunter, and JBL would be beyond over anywhere...

Yeah, I completely agree. I think Edge would absolutely tear it up in ROH too. There would definitely be some great match oppertunities/feuds there between a lot of the top guys there.

Edge is a guy who will never have to worry about having a job as long as he wrestles. Theres always a place for a guy like him. I don't think enough can be said about how much he really can deliver in a match or a promo or a fued if the WWE would consistently allowed him to. He has all the potential to be a long standing main eventer and top heel.
But yea, back to the convo...

You have got absolutely no arguments from me with Flair, Michaels and a hard working HHH.
However, there is no way JBL would make it in Ring of Honor. I think the fans would probably boycott the event if JBL was even advertised or JBL would manage to get aboslutely shit on worse than what occured with Jeff Hardy's ROH debut. Don't get me wrong, I think JBL is awesome on the mic and solid in the ring with the right opponents, but ROH fans wouldn't even give him the time of day.

Mr. JL, what happened with Jeff Hardy's debut? I have seen ROH but I don't regularly follow it and I was probably away from wrestling when this happened.

uh, JBL is a Wrestling...GOD. Obviously wrestling fans should be able to enjoy it.

yea I never could dig JBL in the ring, but it absolutely didn't matter. I got to like his character and promos so much that he became extremely entertaining to me. And thats what it's all about. JBL is entertaining.
Big thumbs up to JBL.

Before Jeff even came out from behind the curtain the fans were chanting "Hardy sucks!" Then to top it off Jeff came out as his 'Willow of the Wisp' charcter he created when he was a backyard wrestler. He was under a mask for his entrance and dancing like he was having the worst seizure of his life. And to top it all off he botched even the most basic moves, as well as some of his tradmark moves. The fans shat all over him and it was pretty embarassing.

jesus. now that you mention it I actually knew about that, for whatever reason I didn't remember it
Mr. JL
02-23-2007, 12:08 AM
Oh, and they were also chanting "Go Get Help" in reference to his rumoured drug problems at the time and there were a fair amount of "We Want Matt" chants too.

Well, now that I think of it he would make a killer heel antagonist. I still think anything long term is completely out of the question though. However a short term, one-off feud would probably be the best bet. If you had him cut a promo on the ROH fans, ROH product and then build a feud between him and a ROH regular you'd have a sweet program. Although, JBL would have to lose the match.
But there is no way JBL could last in roh long term, IMO.

Gregory Helms
Val Venis
Trevor Murdoch, for some strange reason

Yeah, Gregory Helms and Val Venis are definitly two guys in particular that I was thinking about when I made the thread.

Yeah he has, he was good too.
I also vote for Randy Orton, kid could put Paul London to shame with his dropsault

This is easy. After WWE buys them out, ALL of the wwe guys will make it. If you don't like it, the wwe will alienate you until a new audience who does takes your place.
What Would Kevin Do?
02-23-2007, 11:57 AM
Orton would not make it.
Flair would cause people to go nuts for an appearance, but wouldn't get over wrestling.
Edge, Carlito, Shelton, HBK, Kenny, and a decent amount of the young talent could, in theory, get over.

Shelton, no matter how bad on the mic he is he'd still be better on it than Roderick
The old school guys like Regal and Benoit would be welcomed with 200000000 streamers
Gregory Helms and Val would work, I actually want to see Helms interact with Delirious for some reason...
Edge would be good for a weekend, kinda like what Christian did.
I would die happy seeing Benoit vs. American Dragon
that or Dean Malenko vs. Homicide

Why would they go from WWE to ROH?
What Would Kevin Do?
02-23-2007, 12:55 PM
Why would they go from WWE to ROH?
WWE releases them, and they go to ROH, or make a one or 2 time appearance, ala Lance Storm, Christian, etc.

Carlito sucks.
In theory MNM vs the Briscoes would be quite the tag team feud.
Mr. JL
02-23-2007, 04:13 PM
Yeah, given the reaction Randy Orton got at ECW One Night Stand and the simularities that exist between ECW and ROH fans, its a safe bet that Randy Orton wouldn't make it in ROH.

I know Helms wouldn't be able to use his Hurricane gimmick but hypothetically if he could, I bet he and Delirious would probably make one hell of an interesting team that could play really well off one another.

James 'Little Guido/Nunzio' Maritato would be great in ROH. That Pure Wrestling Championship of theirs is custom made for him. In fact I have been hoping Maritato would go to ROH for sometime as the WWE is doing nothing with him, and it pissed me off when they fired Tony Mamaluke!

From RAW:
Charlie Haas
Nick Dinsmore
Rob Conway
Jeff Hardy (he's improved quite a bit since he returned to the WWE)
Ken Doane
Lance Cade
Shawn Michaels
Shelton Benjamin
"Umaga" Eddie Fatu (with his badass Japanese training)
"Val Venis" Sean Morley
I want to talk about Morley for a bit. I'm actually not too sure he would be accepted at first. What he does have working for him, though, are the two things that he doesn't actually really get to flaunt in the WWE. His size and his promo abilities. Sean Morley is not a small guy. I think he'd make a good heel in ROH. The guy who worked in the big leagues for years, then comes down and expects to be treated as royalty. It's a shame that Prince Nana isn't still around, because Sean Morley would have made a great member of The Embassy.
