View Full Version : Q about Final Fantasy 7

Aight so I know 7 is considered by a *lot* of FF players to be their favourite - I was just wondering why this is? Granted I haven't played it in full (ages ago I played it for a little bit...barely got past the trainyard nearish the beginning, dunno how far in that is) but compared to say, 8 & 10 (coincidentally the two so far I've clocked) it didn't really grab me straight away - both the others pretty much hooked me from the start and I enjoyed them all the way through.

So what am I missing here?

And no spoilers, assholes

Personally I love 6 more than 7 but that's just because I have an unhealthy obsession with it :o

7 is just so amazing because at the time it came out it just totally blew EVERYTHING else out of the water. It was insanely long, had a shitload of extra stuff to do that had nothing to do with the main storyline, the graphics were very nice (the first 3D FF game), and everything was just so in-depth. I remember when PSX first came out, FF7 was *the* game to have. The cinematics and everything were nice too. The game was just very polished, and it was the first FF game to come out in a while, so it was naturally quite hyped.

I guess since so many people liked it at the start, they are just very biased towards it even to this day. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :p

Here are my reasons:

*Sephiroth is, IMO, the best video game villain ever. The fact that he started as a good guy, but descended into a sort of madness, coupled with the fact that he's nigh invulnerable...fantastic villain.

*Great supporting characters. Barret was very cool, and Aeris had maybe the best storyline of any character in any FF game ever. Add Tifa, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cid, and the ubercool Vincent to that, and each of the "backup" characters are every bit as cool as Cloud.

*A wonderful story. Overthrowing a corrupt government, preventing a madman from destroying the world, plus one of my favorite video game love stories ever.

*A system of levels and abilities that doesn't take a year and a half to master. All the games after VII have been, IMO, too thick to get immersed in right away. But the Materia system was fairly self-explanatory, and it made getting into the game that much easier.

*Fantastic soundtrack.

I'm aiming to get all of the back catalogue at some point - can get all of them on PS1 except for one of them...I think that's 6?? Although I did read a rumour a while ago that the one missing one that isn't on there was going to be converted, so...

I'm pretty sure FF's 1-9 are all on PS1 now.

Origins has 1&2
Chronicles has 3 or 4,(Don't remember which) and Chrono Trigger
Anthology has 5 & 6
Then there's 7,8,9

I thought 4 and 5 were on one disc and 6 had it's own (remembering more now, I think 3 was the one not on there since it was on SNES originally)?

Will have to look into it anyway.

For me it was every aspect of the game; the storyline, the characters, the graphics, and the concept of materia. Instead of trying to figure out how to equip different kinds of magic you just put different types of materia in the slots of your armor, weapons, and accessories. And not to mention Golden Saucer. In my opinion this is THE greatest video game of all-time and I'm not even a fan of RPGs.

They are on 2 disc. It just comes in the same package.

FF 6 you can buy on one disc (comes with an FF 10 demo)

Anthology is FF 4 and 5, and Origins is 1 and 2, so it's 3 that we are missing at the moment. All those are on the GAME website :y:

1/2/3 are NES ones, 4/5/6 are SNES I think, i'm just gonna work my way through the roms I have of them all once i'm done with my new favorite RPG, Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2)

I also have Earthbound, Secret of Evermore, and some others to do.

I watched my friend play FF7 back when it came out over here, and it did look pretty damn sweet. I'll buy 7/8/9/X at some point, and the other one (not sure if it's X-2 or XI, i'm not interested in the MMORPG one)

and Crystal chronicles and Tactics and FFTA and Sword of Mana, oh my :$

I liked 7 because the story was great, the characters were all cool and the best part was the music. I have a bunch downloaded on my comp right now and its just some of the best ever done.

Will have to look into it anyway.

FF Origins: FF1 & FF2 on one disc.
FF Chronicles: Chrono Trigger & FF4 (FF2 in USA) on two discs.
FF Anthology: FF5 & FF6 (FF3 in USA) on two discs.

That just leaves FF3 and FF: Mystic Quest to be re-released in USA.

And I like 5 the best, it has the best story IMO and introduced the highly customizable job system that FF11 and FFX2 embrace today.

Though the main enemy was a tree, and that's kinda dumb.

FF7 is the epitome of Final Fantasys because it really did blow every other RPG out of the water in its prime.

The graphics are excellent, despite the polygonal characters, the music is great, the plot development of the storyline is amazing, the battle system is different, but still better than most other Final Fantasys, all the characters have stories and reasons for why they're in the game, and everything else is good too.

I personally like FF7 the most, but I've played all of them except FFX2. My other favorites are FF2, 5, and 9. All for the same reasons.

Oh yeah and Final Fantasy Adventure for Game Boy is awesome too.

I thought some people were overreacting when they started talking about the X-2 ads in the States but I see one on average once every 90 minutes...which for a video game is pretty unheard of far as I remember :o

Final Fantasy 7 was the first in the series that I played, and it had me hooked from the get go,so 7 will always have a special place in my mind.
8 did'nt really grab me at first, it took a few dedicated days for me to actually start enjoying it.
But X was THE NUTS, nothing more that can be said about X really.
Just got X2 and so far it looks every bit as good as the last.

Sephiroth was the man :y:

At the time, FF7 was a breakthrough in RPG's and video games alike.

Here are a few of my reasons..

1)Sephiroth-Definetly the greatest video game villian of all time..He made you love to hate him..
2)The storyline-The game points you in a simple direction of dealing with a corrupt military-like goverment, and then throws turns and twists at every corner. From reluctant hero to savior of the world.
3)In dept characters-You could really relate to some of them. Cloud's search for identity, Barretts war on Shinra, Etc..They all pulled you into the game and made you apart of the journey.
4)sweet graphics-At least for that tiem period. Sure the characters were all super deformed, but the lush envirnoments, and cinematics blew you away.
5)Summonings-The ability to summon great creatures to help you in battles was amazing.
6)Mini games-A break away from the story, and some of them were very, very fun to play.
7)soundtrack-To this day, I still find myself humming some of the music from the game.
8)Aeris-Since I can't post spoilers, whomever has played this game, knows what I'm talking about..It was a big emotional impact o nthe player of FF7.
9)Battle system-Superb 3-d, rotating camera during battles, always gave you the inspiration to find another battles.
10)Vehicles-You get to ride them!! How cool..

I'm currently playing final fantasy 7 and have just entered disc 3. I plan on going to get the omnislash and then going right for Sephiroth shortly after.
