View Full Version : WWE 'panics' about Lawler

The Wrestling Observer reports that when Jerry Lawler was asked who he wanted to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame this year, he said Lance Russell. According to reports, WWE staff paniced and Kevin Dunn had to talk him out of it saying that no one knows who Lance Russell is. For those unaware, Russell was a legendary wrestling announcer for Memphis Wrestling.
Wow, what an insult. He's not a big name to mainstream so he can't induct Lawler into the Hall of Fame even though Lawler worked with him in Memephis. Ridiculous.

But Rhodes' sons can induct him. :D
So those same people actually knew who Verne Gagne was?
Oh, right, they did that to get the library, my bad.
With Lawler going in this year, I would not be surprised for Kaufman to go into the Celebrity wing now that I think about it.

It would only make sense.

Nah coz if Kaufman goes into the celebrity wing, Lawler is the logical choice to induct him. Surely they won't have two speeches from Lawler in one night?
Mr T, Ali or Tyson this year. A boxer.
I just feel it's more fitting to put Kaufman in. You could have Letterman induct him.
Of course, people today "probably don't know who the fuck he is", so it will never happen.
By the way, does anyone have the clip of Kaufman being Piledrived by Lawler?

That's pretty retarded.

I like Lance. Got a few Memphis tapes and he did a great job down there. He was like a Gordon Solie type announcer

thats what i was thinking, he would be better to go in with the king then jr. an kaufman needs to be in the hall of fame more then ole pete rose. he was one of the best wrestling heels of all time, he was the 1st to make wrestling mainstream in the 80's

Maybe if Lawler would've said Spongebob Squarepants, then they would be like "Great idea!"

I've had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Lance, and he's a true gentleman and a pleasure to speak with. Very smart, and a true asset to the business.

Yeah, like I said, I see this as kind of insulting.

There is the Kaufman vs. Lawler history recap. Their biggest match everyone knows bout is right around one minute mark. So fucking stupid they laugh tracked Kaufman's promos on this clip, completely ruins it.
But yeah, out of all the celebrities I think Kaufman is most deserving to get in. Would also prefer Bob Zmuda to induct him or accept on his behalf if Lawler wants to induct him. Zmuda was Andy's good friend and writer, he also has a cameo in the best film ever made D.C. CAB.

I think Andy should DEFINITELY be in the HoF.
He drew a great deal of mainstream attention to the business, gave a great deal to it, got little in return and had a blast doing it. True performer as well, and an inspiration for a lot of people.
If Kaufman gets in, they could have Tony Clifton induct him :shifty:

I don't understand why Lawler was dq'ed :(

Not 100% sure but I think, for a while at least, the Piledriver was a "banned" move.

I can't see the video, but did it come directly after a Piledriver? I think Piledrivers were barred, either in the scene at that time, or just for the match/feud.
If my Man on the Moon memory serves me correctly, Kaufman pissed Lawler off so bad, he was willing to throw a match just so he could drop Kaufman on his head. Good stuff. :y:
It's pretty damn retarded of the WWE to do that. How man Cena fans know who Curt Hennig is? Jerry Lawler is going into the Hall of Fame, and he should have whoever he want to induct him induct him. It would also make sense, as Lawler being inducted by a commentator makes sense when taking into consideration Lawler's later career pathways.
Let Lance Russell do it, Kevin Dunn, you fuck.
As for Andy Kaufman? He should definitely go in. I think this year would be the time. I can see why some would think Lawler would induct him, but it would have some flavour to it if they didn't have Lawler do it. Even though it was made public the whole thing was staged, the "hatred" between both men is what made their feud so great.
Have David Letterman do it, as already suggested. I don't know if he would be willing to dip his hands into professional wrestling right now, especially considering it is taboo, but it's worth a shot. If they can't get Letterman, Bob Zmuda would almost definitely do it.
Mr. T, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson are all deserving of being in the celebrity wing, as well. Mr. T you can kind of rule out this year, as Hulk Hogan would be the logical choice to induct him, but seeing as he and the WWE are currently on the outs, it probably won't happen yet. Mike Tyson being inducted by Stone Cold Steve Austin is something I'd like to see, and I could see them doing it this year, but if they wait one more year, they can do it at the one year anniversary of WrestleMania XV. Muhammad Ali can probably be inducted whenever.
2007 Celebrity Wing: Andy Kaufman (preferably inducted by David Letterman and Bob Zmuda) and possibly Muhammad Ali
2008 Celebrity Wing: Mr. T (by Hulk Hogan)

yep
I dunno man, I think I'm gonna hve to call bullshitt on this. Wanting someone no one's ever heard of hardly seems like a reason to panic. Sure, he my have asked for Lance, but I doubt that anyone freaked out about it, they probably just said no and asked him to pick someone else.

It's the fact that they don't want him because "no one knows him" that's bullshit.

Personally I wouldn't want Letterman to induct Kaufman. I just would prefer someone closer to Kaufman inducting him. There are a lot of possible people who could induct him too from Taxi people like Danny Devito, or Jim Carrey or Bob Zmuda/Tony Clifton. Tony Clifton would be pretty hilarious cause I know Zmuda would plan something to fuck with WWE, pulling some sort of prank or stunt. In the end I think the best way to go is have Lawler induct, Zmuda accept on his behalf.
He'll be fired the week before for smuggling coke or some shit into an arena.
