Personally I thought it tried too hard too hard at subtle humor, and even if it weren't subtle it would still fucking suck.
I really liked it the first time but I couldn't stand to watch it again.

It's not bad. It's not the best film I've ever seen, though that dance scene is awesome. The way he runs off at the end is quite funny.

Terrible unfunny, much like Borat.
KingofOldSchool, you sure like to stir shit with your attempts at "casual" observational cynicism. Unfortunately, it just reveals you to be a colossal prick.
Also, I quite enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite. Pretty comical in many parts, especially those with Uncle Rico in them.

My opinion is that Napolean Dynamite ranks right with Borat as being overrated and unfunny.
That was my opinion before, now, and in the future. There is nothing anything wrong with that, bub.

I saw it maybe a week or two after it was released and I loved it. Everything was so new and I could go back and remember certain parts and laugh my ass off. Then after it got huge and it became the flavor of the month the humor lost a lot of its charm. I still appreciate the movie for it what it was but I couldn't watch it again.

The first time I saw it, I saw it like 6 months before it was in theaters. They had a special screening of it at my high school for some reason. I don't know, I was high as hell and not really paying attention and I hated it, though some parts made me LOL. I hated it though.
Then I saw it again and thought it was hilarious.

I saw it the first day it came out in NYC and it was insane how funny it was to me. It was like the funniest shit I had ever seen in my life. I went back the next week with a different group of people to watch it again, and everyone loved it then and I loved it even more the second time. I was convinced it was the funniest movie I had ever seen. Then I went a third time like a week later with my brother and he also loved it, and I loved it even more. Then I downloaded it and watched it two more times and still found it ROFL.
It is insanely hilarious. Such ridiculous weird humor. So many parts got stuck in my head. Like when Rico is talking to Kip at that restaurant and he has his arms folded and he keeps pushing his muscles out, lol I dunno. LOVE IT.
But now it is ruined to all hell. All the people quoting it like two years after it came out. It is completely dead. I dunno if I would find it funny at all if I tried watching it now.

The above is about 99% accurate as far as my own opinion of ND goes. I loved it, before people ruined it by quoting it needlessly and incesssantly, and now it's a passed fad. But at its height, I loved it and thought it was awesomely funny. I even used Naopleon as my avatar...can't remember if it was here or another forum, or both.
There are still parts of ND that I LOL at, scenes that are priceless and can never be ruined, like Pedro saying "You could build her a cake or something." "Build"...who says that? :p

I fall into the same category as KayfabeMan. "ZOMG1! Napoleon Dynamite if the funniest movie eva!!!11 <3 i want to marry Napoleon! oMG! Have you seen him when he's not Napoleon! He's fucking hot!" Hmm, I thought, maybe I should give it a shot.
A laughed once. And that was at the scene where Kip tried to sweep Rex, but Rex just badassed over it. I might have laughed a few more times if Rex trained Kip to be a samurai, or something. Only a few, though.
The movie has been so overrated it's not funny, though. I refuse to say "Gosh" anymore, in fear that it will be connected to Napoleon Dynamite, just because I don't want to be seen as a fan.
I don't get what is so funny about the following lines:
I don't get why a line like "Tina, come get some ham!" being said to a llama. Is it because the llama's name is Tina? Is it because it's eating a pig? Is it because he's talking to it? I don't get it.
The movie seems riddled with set-ups for jokes without punchlines. When he hangs the action figure out of the bus at the start. I don't get why this is funny. Also, the characters in the movie would actually have to try to be so inept, awkward and audience-pandering. Is that the joke? I still don't see why it is funny.
My verdict is that it's a dumb movie masquerading as a smart movie, and it fails on every level.

Yeah, I did see it after the hype. I guess when you're going in not expecting anything, you can kind of enjoy a movie that does whatever it feels like, gosh...I feel dirty now.
The line "Tina, come get some ham," only aggrivated me because I heard so many people repeat it. I can understand if you're watching a movie and a throwaway line tickles your fancy. It's what makes you laugh, and it comes down to who you are, but people were dancing around quoting it like it was some deep comedic genius. In actuality, he wants a llama to eat.
That's what I think my biggest problem with Napoleon Dynamite is. It's nothing but what it is, and for a movie that tries to be so subtle and intelligent with its humour, it's pretty much a sledgehammer to the face, or a cold shower on a winter morning.
YOUR Hero
03-29-2007, 10:23 AM
no you are wrong. It was subtle, but well done and thusly became popular. It took on it's own life outside the theater and into people's vocab. It was not a sledgehammer by design, it became one through it's audience.

I see your point, and the audience did wreck it, but I personally think it was fairly obvious while I was watching it. Some of the gags are subtle, and do hit (I loved the way Napoleon went as far as the chord would go around a corner while he talked), but a lot of it seemed to be trying too hard.
Take Napoleon's love interest, I've forgotten her name: The performance was just too obvious right down to the physical appearance (who does their hair like that?). Sure, that may have been the point, but I don't think it was subtle at all. Things like getting meat thrown in the face aren't the smartest gags, either.
I think it is more fractioned their absolute either way, but watching it I knew why I was meant to laugh, I just didn't think it was clever or funny.
Mr. Nerfect
04-01-2007, 12:14 AM
I think the essence of the actual Napoleon Dynamite character is somewhat cerebral, but the way it was adapted is just too one-dimensional for any depth.
