View Full Version : Worst World Title Reign

I'd have to say it has to be Rey Mysterio by a hair. His <s>loses</s> jobbings to Henry, Khali and Kane to made me stop watching Smackdown forever, what the heck were they thinking?
2nd would have to be Rhinos TNA reign. He wins 3 matches in one night. One being a hardcore match then loses the next week by a guitar shot.

You can't even count Kane's, or any one-day run with the title as a real "reign." As far as people who actually had the sun rise and set a few times while they held the belt,I'd have to say HHH in 2002. He comes back from his injury, squeezes every last bit of heat and credibility out of Jericho's reign, only to drop to HULK FUCKING HOGAN a month later. And before anyone says that Hogans subsequent run was worse, at least it had an element of nostalgia to it, and at least he dropped it to someone who deserved it slightly more than he did.
Jeritron

Yes, I agree with that HHH reign. It was pretty pointless. Not to mention the topic asked from winning match to losing match, In which case I hate HHHs. He came back and buried Jericho in a good match that flopped because of what it followed. Then he held it pointlessly for a month, introduced a new belt I didn't like at the time, and quickly lost it to HULK HOGAN of all people. So they buried HHH and Jericho for Hogan.
Also, I love HHH but I wasn't even diggin him as a champion. He was a crappy face in that time, and when he won the title what was it supposed to mean, he was back? I mean, he was back 3 months before he didn't have to win the title just because he tore his quad. He had been on top before. And it was like, okay you won the title, now you're even with Stephanie about the dog. It wasn't even about the fued between the competitors or the title it was for.

The only time I've kind of enjoyed him is when he first turned heel but then the nWo/Hogan got old fast because of it's repeatitiveness.

Assuming we arn't talking about non-wrestlers and people who held the belt for more than a 24 hours period, I gotta go with Taz's second ECW World Title reign. It was terrible. He wins it from Awesome, then jobs to HHH, then dropped it to Dreamer, who turned right around a dropped it to Credible that same day. It was all very sloppy and in the end really hurt the Championship's value, which had been so flawlessly gaining repsect for the 3 years leading up to that.
I would say a Hogan run was the worst, but I'll be honest, the only time I've ever watch a wrestling show were Hogan was Champ was during his first two reigns with the nWo...and the nWo was so brillient, I can't even ault Hogan for hogging the belt all the time.

Jericho's title run bitterly upset me. Here's a guy people love and can carry a pudding through a match, and they totally blow it.
I've never enjoyed Batista as champion but he's not the worst. All in all, Justin Credible with the ECW strap would be my pick. I understand that with all the departing talent and small locker-room that Paul didn't really have a choice and tried to build Credible into a cocky, arrogant punk but he was mid-card/tag team champion at best.
The One
03-18-2007, 04:46 PM
See, Credible could have been a (pardon the pun) credible champion, the problem was he was never treated like the Champ. He had no real build up, Dreamer had just finished beating Taz for the belt and then for no real reason other than Lance was going to WCW, Credible was thrown in the World Title scene and beat Dreamer for the belt. He continued his WTF fued with Dreamer...all the while RVD and Rhino were clearly the bigger and more featured stars. Then he dropped the belt to Lynn. It was just kind of a "Shit, most of our big stars are leaving and we don't wanna blow our load to quick on RVD winning the belt...uh...uh...give it to Credible, he's not going anywhere for a while!" I think Justin had the skills and the personality to become much more than he was, the problem was, even as the Champ, he still didn't get time to grow into something beyond a 2 dimensional character.

Vampiro in WSX.
I often think of Jericho's and how bad it was, and not his fault at all. Started off with a bang but went to shit. I look at a reign like that, or a few others as more of dissapointments than I do worst title reigns.
There's been some shitty title reigns by wrestlers I love, and it was all a result of booking and their promotions handling of it rather than their skills or credibility.
So I'm gonna have to go with Backlund's in 94 actually. I'm changing my vote to that. It was ridiculous. Nothing against Backlund, but it was at a time when he had no business being champion anymore, especially in a new era WWF. But most importantly on top of that it was a 3 day reign that concluded in a 8 second squash at a house show like Mr. JL said.

Jesus that was pretty bad too. A midcard title fued with Bossman over his estranged fathers corpse was embarassing enough, let alone for the WWF world fucking title.
That was god awful. Ironically enough, the only credible and meaningful moments he had as a champion were probably the match he won it and the match he lost it. Not that they were anything to write home about.
I attended a Raw during his "reign" as world champion and he defended the strap against VISCERA. Embarassing. And it was in the middle of the card.
Big Show's title reigns were all pretty bad, but this one takes the cake. Strangley enough I'd say his best title reign, at least with WWE was with the ECW title. His WCW reign was bearable but being dubbed as Andre's son was pretty bad.
I find that the worst title reigns keep coming up and I have forgetten them all, which was probably for the better.

No one has mentioned Yokozuna's 4 minute "reign"...
As far as actual bad reigns, I'd say Edge's after New Year's Revolution was pretty pointless. I was hoping he and Cena would turn into a Rock/HHH situation where they basically traded the belt at PPVs, but then, no one is in Cena's league anyway.

Mick Foley's first reign was terrible. They booked him in a match with Kane the next week after winning the belt (Kane beat him and Foley was made to look very weak). And then he dropped it at Royal Rumble 99 after getting destroyed off the Rock.

Randy Orton
A. He took the belt from the most deserving man in professional wrestling, and he did it clean. That pissed me off.
B. His subsequent face turn was poorly conceived.
C. Not at all ready to play the face on the mic.
D. Only feuded with Triple H.
E. Lost all of his heat after the title run was over, which lasted approximately 2 months, and meandered around RAW as a shitty babyface for awhile.
F. He has no move set.

Yeah yeah, bad pun, I know...
Anyway, much as I agree with many of the names here, Rey's title run was fucking horrible. I'm not counting any reign that was less than a day, so while I agree Kane might otherwise rank, I can't count him in good conscience. Or sanity.
Rey's run made me vomit. Figurately. I was psychically over a toilet boil, mental spew forcing out of my mouth until I choked to death--Figuratively.

I think the worst World Title reign has to have been John Cena's first World Title reign from April of 2005 to January of 2006. If I remember correctly there were only two decent matches he put on in the whole reign against Jericho and is first defense against JBL. In the process he was booked to win ever match he was in in dominating fashion which is always boring as hell. People were so fed up with him being the chance by the time July rolled around and he stell wound up holding the title as a baby faced getting booed in ever venue for a good 6 months. His first reign was a most glaring example of the WWE trying to tell the fans what they like, and the fan just not caring.

Say what you will about Cena's work, but you can't deny, he HAS gotten over. And truthfully he isn't a terrible champion. He has the mass appeal. He gets the kids and girls to cheer for him, so for whatever that's worth...he is a horrible gimmick...or was... now he's just a bland guy who kind of still does this Marine thing depsite never being a Marine and only acting in a shitty movie, that honestly had NOTHING to do with Marines. Either way, I'd take Cena over Hogan.
And let's be real, Rey didn't kill the World Title, the World Title has been nothing more than a glorified midcard belt since...well...always.

Nope. Angle/Lesnar carried the WWE title for the first year and totally made it worth more than Hunter's one again off again love afair with the belt. Second year, I'm sorry, but between Eddie Guerrero's perectly timed reign, and JBL's incredibly under rated (one of the best heel) reigns of all time, it still meant more. The titles may have been booked higher up the card, but realistically, the WWE Championship has always meant more. Always.

It toally agree with you in the fact that Cena was over, but he was only over for the first third of his first reign the rest of his reign was just a pinful attempt to jam him down the throats of the fans.
However, in Cena's last two title reigns I cannot deny that he is getting good reactions and putting on some pretty entertaining matches.
