Saw Hostel. I was pretty pumped for it hearing good things. I like to think of myself as a horror movie fan, but I'm certainly not the biggest. In the end it was a huge let down. Normally I avoid movies like Hostel, as they are more for the casual horror fan watcher. But all the hype made me interested, in the end I wondered why there was the hype. I've seen more violence in other films, the plot and characters weren't that great. They spent most of the movie setting up the character, yet the characters were uninteresting/annoying.

Both were good. Descent was the better one tho.

I liked The Descent but didnt really care much for Hostel...
Im not really a huge fan of horror movies because some times they go over the top in the gore...

Could people who liked Hostel explain why they did? I see no reason why it is so hyped up

Hostel was watchable! Not great but as a horror fan i did enjoy it. It was no where near as sick as i was led to expect, some parts were fairly nasty though. And the pay off at the end was surprisingly satisfying.
the story is a pretty awesome idea too, very fucked up and twisted....
The desecnt was a decent horror movie, i liked it. Better than that other big budget american film set in caves that came out at the same time...that was drivel. But the descent was a decent watch.....you know in a way!

You know, what did it for me was the fact that I actually liked the characters in Hostel. Wasn't expecting to.

I didn't mind Hostel, like Mr Regal I expected it to be sicker than it was - don't believe the hype. The Decent I enjoyed, although as I've said before if I had seen it with the American ending it would have sucked.

Hostel was ok, not as bad as the hype made it out to be, although the part with the Japanese girl's eye was slightly disgusting. I have a feeling Hostel 2 is going to suck big shit though.

I vaguely recall there being 2 movies come out around the same time about spelunkers getting lost in caves and being attacked. One was good while the other sucked. Can't remember which was which.

I didn't really like the Descent.
I enjoyed Hostel, but it wasn't great. The story was okay, but I wanted gore... and after hearing how gory etc it was, I felt really let down. The dangling eye thing is shit, and the rubber fingers effect doesn't do it for me. I've seen gorier than that. But overall it's an okay film to watch.

I really disliked Hostel. The attitude Eli Roth developed because he thought he was "pushing the envelope" really pissed me off. That kind of stayed with me throughout the film, although I didn't mind the bits prior to the "extreme violence", as obviously exploitive as it was. Eli Roth proved he had potential with Cabin Fever, so maybe Hostel 2 won't be so bad, especially if his women characters are actually likeable. I'm not expecting much, though.
I'm yet to see The Descent, but I've heard great things about it.

I just watched Hostel in our cult film lecture and I thought it was a pile of wank. Story seemed to switch too fast, and didn't really develop the feeling/shock I thought it would. I liked the references to Pulp Fiction and other pop culture things, the piss taking at how little Americans know about Europe and the attitude the west has towards the east, but as a film in general, it really didnt live up.
Without Tarantinos name, and it being packaged purposely as a cult film, it woulda been shunted faster than Cabin Fever.

I still can't get over that woman having a heart attack, and Eli Roth allegedly hoping she died so his ego could masturbate itself because his film his so "shocking".
They may not be as mainstream as Roth's film, but there are so many other gore-filled exposes into the horror genre, that Roth thinking his is something innovative is just ignorant to the very genre he seems to be trying to achieve recognition with. Perhaps because he doesn't have the skills to venture outwards. What pisses me off most about Hostel isn't that it was gratuitous gore, not at all, but that it didn't even have the integrity to deliver said amounts gore.
