I'm not sure which one I liked better. The first was more consistent, but what I liked about the second was significantly better than the first. Though the second dragged at points, and the ending pissed me off to no end (We're not in the thirties, I didn't pay a nickel, and this isn't a serial).

I'm a real sucker for character development. That's why for me originals almost always win over sequels. Sequels tend to be about action, leaving little in new character development. 'We're supposed to know all about them already....' mantra seems to prevail.

They spent a lot of time on character development in the second though, and establishing the world. Both of which are very similar, and both of which left the movie to drag in many places.

Jones' heart was explained....the flying dutchman being crewed by merfolk was explained...what the f is a mindflayer?
and you make it sound like Elizabeth was a damsein in distress...she got out of prison, made her own way to Tortuga to find Jack...stole the letters of marque by gunpoint by herself...handled herself quite well in a swordfight, and f'd over Jack.

I suppose, they just took a direction with it for the second movie that was much more outlandish than the first. I thought that was fine, but it did piss me off a bit that they're trying to make something epic out of what was a good stand alone movie.
Pirates is good, but I'm just not excited for a third installment already. I'm sick of the whole thing since the second came out a year ago and has been all over the place ever since. Overkill.

Pirates 2 was a tad on the ehh side. It dragged at times. It had it's strong points and it's weak points, like most movies I suppose. I wouldn't say I hate it or that it's bad. I just didn't like it nearly as much as the first, but it was okay. I saw it twice in theaters (with friends and with my neice and nephew), and actually own it on dvd but have never gotten around to watching it another time since the theater. Maybe I'll check it out before I go see World's End...maybe.
I must say, the third does look much better
That scene at the end of part two where Keira Knightley locked Jack to the boat and kissed him and shit, made my cock move.
But yah i love the whole Jack Sparrow/ Knightleys charachter storyline.
Loved the first two movies and this one looks absolutely amazing i cant wait.

Better than the second movie, worse than the first.
Its extremely overbloated and 20 or 30 minutes could've easily been trimmed from it.
But it does have some enjoyable moments.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about catching the new Harry Potter movie, but I'm worried it might be much more outlandish than the first few. Any advice?
Dead Man's chest without a doubt took the series an entirely new direction. The first was big with fantasy elements, but nothing like DMC. And just looking at the new one, I mean they're sailing on sand and to the end of some flat earth waterfall. I haven't seen it yet so I can't really judge it fully, but it's a new direction with these sequels.
The first movie was a fantasy storyline about a pirate curse and a ghost ship, set with real humans in the real world during the British Emprie. It was a pirate movie. The second is of course a pirate movie, and deals with a lot of the same characters but it takes a new direction. Non-humans are introduced, sea monsters, witch doctors, and huge fantasy elements like sailing to the ends of the earth to rescue someone who was swallowed whole and killed, yet preserved through some supernatural trickery or portal into a netherworld.
That's fine, I'm not faulting it. But the first was a fantasy story about Pirates set in the real world. The second and third seem to be set in an elaborate fantasy world altogether, like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. Whereas the first was a tall tale set in a real world, kinda like..Indiana Jones, or Terminator.
I just think it's obvious that they had no intentions for it to be as big as it was and when it was, they took the Star Wars approach and enhanced their direction and world.
Harry Potter was out there from the get go, and stays within that.
I'm not calling this a real flaw really, it's just an observation and I didn't really like it personally. I found Pirates 2 to be mediocre. I thought it often dragged, was more ambitious than it was able to pull off. I also thought at times it was a self parody or imitation with some of the things they did, especially with Sparrow. It was like they were trying to emulate what was cool about the first so hard, that it actually became forced.
Now I know you're all gung ho about POTC and Sparrow and you're amped for this movie, and that's fine. I understand that and don't expect you to change your mind. I want to see it too. This is just my opinion on the series taking a turn for the mediocre after a pretty decent first intallment, and I know I'm not alone out there. It certainly changed, for better or for worse.

Oh I know...I was just saying...
anyways...Saw it a few minutes ago....It was an alright movie. I was more impressed with the first two than I was with this one. The fights were pretty good and the music was great just like the first two movies. I was a little angry at a few things they did....but sadly the one big thing in the movie that would of been shocking for me wasnt because it was given away basically in the 2nd movie.
I wish they would of stuck this with the 2nd movie because that would of been great.
I like how they leave a little tidbit in there about possibly a 4th one...
And YES...for those wondering...There is a scene after the credits just like the other two films...

I have one major gripe with this movie, and as far as gripes go, it's still not all that major.
Yarrr, tharr be spoilers ahead.
Okay, how come everyone seemed to know in THIS movie that Davy Jones needed a replacement? That whoever killed him would have to take his place as captain of the Flying Dutchman?
Don't you think Bootstrap Bill might've mentioned that to William before letting him leave, or that any of the like 5 other characters who point this out might've said something at some point during one of the several scenes in which his heart is made an issue?
I loved the fucking movie, don't get me wrong. While it could have used with a couple of scenes being deleted, I never actually felt the movie dragged. But that one point, it just strikes me as RELALY bad storytelling. This is pretty CRUCIAL to the third movie, and since the second one establishes the third one, it would have been a good idea.
Since I already put up a spoiler warning, I'm liking the way they ended the movie, and the scene afterwards. If they end the series here, this is a good way to do it.

Got back from this a little while ago. Here's my thoughts. Spolilers will probably be mixed in. You've been warned.
It probably could have gotten chopped down about a good 30 minutes or so. I mean, cut down on the fucking tea drinking scenes or something.
Subtitles would have been great cause I could make out a damn thing Tia Dalma was saying. I only caught a few words total.
Lost mad interest in the movie when Chow Yun-Fat got killed off. He looked like a fucking prime player and I was hoping for some Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon swordfighting from him. :'(
Yeah, pretty much knew that with all the bullshit about the Dutchman, heart, captain being brought up left and right, the end was pretty clear.
The only humor I found in the movie was the stuff the monkey and parrot were doing. Nothing else got me laughing.
Keith Richards better give that jacket back to Captain Hook. That was I thought when I first saw him.
I wish they took the time to give some background on the rest of the Pirate Lords. Would have been interesting to know where they roam and what their claim to fame was.
Yeah I guess you can close the book on Will Turner and Liz Shaw. Unless something comes up.
All in all. Alright movie. Put it behind Curse of the Black Pearl, but ahead of Dead Man's Chest. Yes it leaves an opening to go to find the Fountain of Youth. Only time will tell.

I'm suprised everyone who has cared to post here enjoyed it. Everyone I've talked to and any review I've read has panned it. In the theater me and the people I was with were laughing hysterically at the end battle and that bruckheimer trash of the captain walking unphased through an explosion in slow mo. Nobody told us to shut up, in fact the strangers that hadn't gotten up and left in the rows around us starting laughing. I kid you not, It was pretty funny actually. That's just me and one theater's opinions though.

it's definitely got mixed reactions. I can only speak for myself and some friends when I say I hated it. I do still love the first and somewhat the second though. Critics pan it, but they can suck dick as in any case. After all, Empire Strikes Back got bad reviews from them...

On which count? I think Pirates 3 was bad, I'm not alone. Either way that's just my opinion. But as for Lady in the Water...don't tell me you thought that was good too...?
My Point was, I completely disagree with you.
Oh and no i did not like Lady in the Lake. It was a fucking appalling waste of time and energy.

Well, when I watched the scene after the credits, which was ten years later, the six people left laughed at how Elizabeth hasn't aged.
I did chuckle at that too...maybe Jack shared the location of the fountain of youth eh? haha

I don't doubt you, but I assure you the theater I was at was disgruntled. I saw it Memorial Day afternoon though. I'm sure the reaction was different with a packed house of fans/fanboys at an opening day or midnight showing, which I'm assuming you went to? I don't mean that as a pot shot, I go to fanboy showings all the time. It's just a different crowd than your casual monday afternooners.
Howabout a Saturday afternoon showing?
Yeaj, sorry to burst your bubble. I don't go to midnight showings. They're gay. Fuck, I rarely go opening night. Still gay.

I'm sure he offered up a fountain to her, at least....

It was alright. Not as good as Pirates 2. I thought it got bogged down in exposition quite a bit.
Loved the Keith Richards cameo. I thought it was just gonna be some jokey little thing, but he was badass. If there are more sequels, I hope he comes back.

I work at a movie theater and I hear what everyone thinks about movies, and most people seem to be disappointed about this one.
Also, I get seriously pissed off about 50 people waiting to see the stupid fucking end credits scene.
Next week, though, I can start lying and telling them there's nothing at the end.

The lack of an epic sword fight make me very unhappy. More of the same from this sequal, which isn't a negitive. Only this time it felt forced. I was dissapointed in this one, and while I will say it was the worst of the series I would like to add that it aint easy being on par with the standerd the origional left. Decent waste of three hours hours and MUCH better than the other summer block busters so far. (Unless you count 28 weeks as a blockbuster [and I dont.])
