We started a conversation a few days about who the next big thing might be. Well, PWTorch is reporting WWE Champion John Cena is being seen as Vince McMahon's "pet" around most locker room circles. John Cena and Vince McMahon spend a lot of time together backstage on television days. Reports are suggesting that it has started to get frustrating to more than one main event wrestler.

Another 17 and a half years then Cena can legally marry Aurora Rose.

I didn't know it was apparently getting on main eventers' nerves. I hope Cena gets stiffed a bit, or something.

All big champs have done this. John Cena seems like a great guy backstage. Bret has done this. Hogan has done this. HBK has done this. Even Austin has done this.
I remember a video that was on Youtube where Umaga was chopping someone from the Spirit Squad, and Cena was right there. I thought it was nice how he was hanging out with the younger un established guys.

Whats amazing is that even when Cena was starting to get stale and you could here the boo's. They still went all out to get him over and it worked. He's over big time once again and he hasnt lost the belt while doing so. I like him a little more every week and i think its cause slowly they are getting him away from the whole rapper gimmick ( has anyone noticed this ? ) .

I only hear about wrestling on here, haven't seen it in months, so I can only assume that he still sucks, but I might take your word for it.

He has been slightly more tolerable. I wouldn't say I'm liking him more every week, though. He needs to either turn heel or lose the Title, though.

Yeah, this seriously sounds like jealousy. Obviously the man Vince appoints as his main squeez is going to be hanging around him a bit. Cena is the face of THE fucking company. He'd be stupid to ignore or 'blow off' THE boss to go hang around a bunch of wrestlers preoccupied with ribbing one another or whatever.
Mr. JL
03-22-2007, 03:28 AM
I mean, if you're boss who pays your salary and thus pays for your house, car and being able to put food on the table wants to talk about how to present yourself, storylines, matches, whatever are even gonna consider to blow him off to hang around some colleague you hardly know anything about so you can fool around?

I would hardly say he got over. Rather, I would suggest that the Haters got tired of screaming at the brick wall that is Vince's head. The cheers he receives are still the 3rd grade boys and 14 y/o girls.
Besides, last week, the boos were back, nice and strong.

Either way, Cena still gets a reaction and besides MAYBE Degeneration X, he probably moves the most merchandise in the company.
I was watchin WrestleMania 20 last night...Man was Cena over back then! Huge pop!

Man he FU'd the Big Show. And his FU's on Show beat Lesnar's F5's on the same.
Anyone have the video of the Armageddon where Brock F5'd Show while interfering for Angle and nearly took his own head off?

In fact, Cena's boos disappearing coincided with a pretty sizable drop in ratings.

Let's be fair. IT's a lot easier to hit a fireman's carry than the F-5.

True. But it still looked better, and probably because it is easier. And wanting to see Lesnar nearly behead himself with a morbidly obese man is unrelated to the topic of which was better, it was just something I was reminded of. It looked like he was ducking getting hit by a flying bus.

I've noticed that the boos tend to come and go. Nothing is quite as strong as they were a year and a half ago, though. They seem to be inconsequential, since Cena's getting booed out of the building ended in a 2 week Edge title run.
Nothing short of assassination, Tim White style, will end his push. People who don't like it should just stop watching.

I'm not saying anything against the guy. I really don't care either way about the man. I'm just saying, you can't say the crowd loves him just because the people who don't like him don't waste their energy in voicing their unheard opinion.
Kane Knight
03-23-2007, 05:15 PM
Which is totally fair.
When ratings started to go back up, you'd hear a slightly more mixed reaction.
I don't know much about the newer eps, but if boos are coming and going, it'd seem that the correlation between ratings and Cena's support is clear...

By the way, I overall like Cena.
I'm sick of his current gimmick, but that's where my "hate" for him ends.
As long as he doesn't get on the mic and try to be funny, I'm indifferent towards him.

He's bland. If he had the edge he had prior to him winning the WWE Title, it would be a different story.
An entertaining character can sometimes help mask the in-ring flaws.
And like everyone has said 500 million times, the best way for him to get fresh is through a heel turn. And no, it won't effect his merchandise. Hell look at Triple H, he sold a lot of merchandise while he was a heel. Current day Edge sells his fair share as well. The only drop of in sales would be with the kids, because the women who buy his stuff because "OMG HE''S SEXII!" will still buy regardless. And then if Cena's heel persona can get over with the male audience then that will negate the drop in merchandise with the kids. So technically WWE wouldn't lose merchandise money with Cena if he turns heel.
Of course WWE is hell bent on keeping Super Babyface Cena so that won't happy. And Cena will be babyface for the next 50 years.

To the topic... Why do you not realize Cena already is the WWE's next big thing? Just because the pretentious internet crowd hates him? People love Cena, he will be around for years. Why do people constantly complain, he has the exact formula a wrestler needs to get over, he has a consistant move set that makes him memorable, he is great on the microphone, and he has more charisma than any other face in WWE, aside from HBK. Hogan was the same way, Rock, Austin, Sting... Get over it.

For what it's worth, TPWW hated The Rock back in 2000-2002 saying he was sloppy, only had 5 moves, and other than mic work was one of the worst wrestlers ever. True story.
Cena isn't the worst thing to ever happen, most of my anger towards Cena is actually based around the way the Title Belt looks. I personally think it looks like shit, but that was a Vince McMahon call. As for Cena, I find him bland and boring, but he has a fan base. It's not me. It's not the internet crowd. It's not wrestling traditionalists. And it's not as big as some of the other big names of the past, but he does have a legion of loyal fans...or at least people willing to tune in to watch...

People also used to like Cena.
Also, ifonly the "pretentious internet" has a problem with him, why did ratings drop? Why did he get booed for so long?
Sting, Austin, the Rock...They all helped ratings. Cena suspended them in medicority.
Yeah, why don't people see he's the next big thing?

Yeah, God forbid a product is marketed towards a demographic.
Yeah they "supposedly" gear their product to males 18-31, which ironically are the same crowd that hate Cena.
Women make a very, SMALL demographic.
Kids, yeah it's popular with kids but I reckon that more 18-31 year old males watch.
Retards, well they always forget what channel Raw is on so they always miss it.

Worth pointing out that Smackdown actually pumelled into our heads how important the "coveted" 18-35 demographic is.
I mean, things said in wrestling are often false, but the fact is, this is true, and WWE had Cole advertise it for months.
Women are important, but if you have a strong "female" base at the cost of the main demographic, you're fucked.
Kids? Well, they're the main outlet for merchandise right now, so this definitely matters. on the other hand, you have to worry about pay per views and tickets, which are heavily dependant on adults.
