View Full Version : You know who was underrated as a commentator?

Roddy Piper.
Seriously, the guy is a natural.
He should replace Michael Cole on Smackdown.
Think about it Piper and JBL on commentary.

I guess I never really considered as a serious long term commentator. But you're right, he would be phenominal. The arguments that he and JBL could get into would be classic.

In general, I feel like we need more heel commentators. JR/King, Tazz/Styles, Tenay/West...all both face teams. Really, JBL is the only heel we have left. :'(

Ted DiBiase was a heel comentator after he had to retire and if they didn't let him go, he could've been another good heel comentator.

Well you can't have 2 personalities calling the show alone. Especially two over the top heel characters.
But I'd love to see him on a commentary team. I think WWE should implement a 3 man commentary team. On smackdown it'd be excellent to have a 3rd personality.
Imagine JBL Cole and Piper.
Or how about Heenan thrown into the mix with one of the current teams. JR Heenan and King would be classic. Heenan and King's discussion with J.R playing the role of the guy stuck in the middle of their madness.
Same with Cole as the voice of reason between Piper and JBL, or JBL and Heenan.

Personally, I think Piper should be a GM

:wtf:
JBL = Heel
Piper = Face
Not that hard.

Yea but dude, they're both personalities. Which is a good thing, they're excellent. But you'd have 2 color commentators and there wouldn't be your non-veteran wrestler cut and dry play by play.

I dont' think heenan should call any more matches. His voice is terrible right now. He was the best but now he wouldnt' be ver good.

While we're on the topic of commentators, I feel the need to point out once again that I utterly hate and loath Don West.
Jeritron
03-22-2007, 07:13 PM
me too. I hate Tenay with a passion too. TNA should have Nash or someone whos a former personality of importance doing color.
I also wish Shciavone was still on a headset somewhere.

Tenay isn't terrible, infact I'd put his current day performances over current day JR's. But beating JR in commentary these days simply means you know the difference between a wrist lock and BBQ Sauce.
I liked Schiavone. Where is that dude anyways?

Piper was great back in the early 90's. Today he'd be shit.

He'd still be better than Cole and Ross.

Honestly, last I heard he was working as a sport reporter on some radio station in Atlanta or something...

And I'd be better than Mini Me at a Slam Dunk contest...doesn't mean I'd be good.
Dont' know why I did that since you were arguing something I agree with, I guess I just felt like being an ass. :D

Cole is garbage they should replace him as soon as they can. But for some reason some of the upper guys think he's "the new thing" in commentary...

Cole isn't good, but right now, he's the best play by play man in the industry.
Wow, that's something I was sure I would never have to type in my lifetime.

Schiavone was always terrible.
Cyrus and Gertner need to come back. Cyrus never will tho :(

Cole is underrated. He's certainly not the best, but he isn't the pits either.
There's no chance of Heenan ever returning to the booth, bar maybe a novelty one-off match here or there. His voice is not clear enough. He was the best colour man of all time, but sadly his day has gone. Cancer's a thief.
I've been touting Roddy Piper as one the best face colour men for years on here. Check out SummerSlams '90 and '91, Rumble '91 and Survivor Series '90. He was at his best when teamed with straight man Gorilla Monsoon, with Heenan as the antagonist. A JBL/Piper teaming would only work with a straight man in the middle, in a 3 man team.

Perfect was pretty good in the colour spot, he did a great job @ Rumble 96. As well as a few episodes of Superstars in and around that time.

TNA should really look into making Nash or Raven the color man for there broadcasts. Tenay isn't very good, but West is horrible. I think if you got Nash or Raven as a heel announcer with Tenay, Tenay might actually up his game. When he was with Heenan he was pretty alright, but then again you could put Heenan with a down syndrome kid without a voice box and the guy would sound great.

Cole is definitely the worst play by play man in the business today.

Are you sure with all the screw-ups JR has been having lately, that Cole holds this title?

Screw ups aside, JR is still a damn good commentator, esprcialy in the main event.
El Fangel

Ill give him that, even with the screwups lately, he likely is/was the best commentator the WWE has ever had.
Blitz
03-22-2007, 11:31 PM
Exactly. Yeah, JR calls a lot of moves wrong. But he is always on during big matches, and the he actually shows emotion and passion. Cole has all the personality of a damp towel.

I think what makes him stand out is his corny sayings that relates to whats happening in the ring. I mean as a commentator, he is the big dog in the yard, and when other commenators see his they run like scalded dogs before they get beaten like government mules in a good ol' fashioned slobber-knocker :)

Ross and Heenan worked together at WrestleMania IX and King of the Ring '93, in a three-man team with Randy Savage. Good team actually. This was back in the day before he was "good ole J.R., cowboy hat-wearing BAH GOD hype machine".
Also if you thought Hennig was a good commentator in 1996, you should have heard him in 1991/92. He was great back then.... by 1996 he was phoning it in. Check out his big return at Survivor Series 1995. He clearly had done no research or preparation and likely hadn't watched any WWE the whole time he was away. He didn't know who most of the roster were, what their issues were, and seemed confused and struggled for the whole show.

Michael Hayes was always a good commentator. I really liked the early days of Dok Hendrix (1995/96). He was the only good thing about KOTR '95.
And as successful as Raven has been as a dark, brooding character, I can't wait until he retires. Then, he can once again become the jovial buffoon commentator he played in the early 90s in PNW and WWE. The next Bobby Heenan of the booth, if he ever decides to give it another go.

If you wanna hear how good Raven/Johnny Polo was, check out his teaming with Gorilla Monsoon in this match from 1993. The match sucks, but the announcing is great.

"Paul Bearer??"
"Not Paul Bearer, The Undertaker!"
"I was gonna say!"
"And the ominous urn."
"For a minute there I thought you'd flipped your ever-loving marbles, Gorilla"
I think the Gorilla must have been a real easy guy to work with as a comedy heel. He just fed Ventura, Heenan and Polo lines all the time, speaking in soundbites. There'll never be another Gorilla.

It's funny how SummerSlam '91 had such a memorable undercard, but the main event was one of the worst PPV headliners I've ever seen. It's a formula that WCW would use for years.

One thing I have always said about Vince on commentary... he could make ANY match sound exciting. He could make Diesel vs Barry Horowitz seem like the most incredible match he has ever seen.
And not in a Schiavone hype-overkill style, but rather a genuine enthusiasm and excitement.
