Some Home Movies and 12 Oz. Mouse. When I try to open them up in Media Player, it tells me that there was an error downloading codec and only plays the sound. No picture. Is there a way to fix this or am I stuck with some bunk files?

Got a DivX codec? If not, google and download it.

VLC media player is the only video player you should ever have to use

yeah that did the trick
FYI
I use a program called GSpot (free to download).
Simple to use.
Simply "browse" to the video file on your hard drive that you are having problems viewing. GSpot will then tell you what codec is required.
Google that codec and download it - your file should then play.
Having said that, if you have the latest versions/updates of whatever media player(s) you use then the likelihood of you not having a particular codec is reduced.
