I hate to say it, but I'm actually pleased. Seriously, it seemed like MNM and mercury were holding back any plans they wanted to pursue with Nitro. Now you can go ahead with a push for Nitro and the Foley/Nitro/Melina angle on Raw without having to worry about what to do with Mercury.
I mean, he's alright and I realize some consider him the better of the two, but they just had nothing for him and at the moment he was becoming more of an anchor than an asset.
But yeah, this wasn't one I was expecting. Going to guess he did something to upset someone.

I guess they finally decided to not keep MNM as a tag team.

They should have at least left him on until after mania and had Melina and Nitro kick him out in kayfabe.

I bet they fired him just so they couldn't go back on breaking them up (as easily).

Did he break the wellness policy again perhaps?
Maybe he ran into Stephanie McMahon and asked who she was.
Mercury: Hey, you're not supposed to be here! SECURITY!
Stephanie: ...
Mercury: It's a joke.

He had some potential, but considering him and Nitro have the same look and gimmick, and as Nitro is the superior wrestler, it makes sense to cut him loose.
Nitro needs to improve on the mic but he is fastly becoming great in the ring, plus he has the best female talent in years as his manager. Joey has been the 3rd wheel for some time now.

03-26-2007, 09:24 PM
Yeah, this sucks.
I'm hoping this is all a work, and they'll have Mercury show up randomly and attack people, like Matt Hardy circa 2005 done right, or they'll have him join a new WCW brand or something, but that is highly unlikely. He sounds like he fucked up really bad.
Joey Mercury had so much fucking skill it wasn't funny. Mercury was the better talker in MNM, the more experience, and the better wrestler. Nitro is improving, but he is still a rookie compared to Mercury, and still pales in comparison. Mercury is the Matt Hardy to Johnny Nitro's Jeff Hardy.
Hopefully Joey Mathews goes to TNA, or Ring of Honor, or something, and proves his worth to the wrestling world. If this were another era in sports entertainment, I'm pretty sure Mathews could be a guy who gets a push in a rival company, ala Steve Austin when he made the move from WCW over to WWE.

Am I the only one who doesn't give a damn that he's gone? I liked MNM, but I like NM more. Nitro as an IC title singles guy entertains me far more than the two of them together. I could see a well-pushed Nitro vs Edge for the WWE or World title as early as WM26. Being half of a tag team has been dragging Nitro back.

I wonder what he did for a couple months when his nose was broken. Must have smoked crack.
But seriously, welcome to professional wrestling. Maybe the reason they use to release him is coke, but the real reason is because they don't need him and have no use for him right now.
If doing coke off a toilet was cause for immediate release regardless of who it was, Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair among countless others would have been released.

Except that Flair and Michaels were doing their drugs of choice in a laxer time and were bigger stars at their time than Joey is now.
I'm not really arguing in his favor, here, but I'd like to mention the fact that Joey wasn't exactly "holding Nitro back" anymore than Sylvain ended Conway's singles push. Meaning, of course, that Joey didn't make the exacutive decision to keep uniting with Nitro every other week. He simply doesn't have that authority, nor do I give him the credit of having that kind of political status.
However, if the man is, indeed, losing his mind, it's probably best that he get some serious help.

On the other hand, Mercury would be doing coke after Eddie Guererro died, and be a small enough fish to be sacrificed to the Wellness program.
That's not even pointing out how those favored by WWE are handled, that's just the sheer magnitude of the lack of his possible comparison with Flair and the Half-Coked Kid. Well, combined with the fact that drugs in wrestling are now so big a deal that ESPN decided to run with a story that wrestlers did steroids several years ago.

That was my whole point. That they're bigger stars. Hence they get away with it. And someone useless like Joey Mercury is cut loose.

As much as I lacked interest in Mercury, I did see some potential in him. He doesn't suck quite as hard as alot of other guys on the roster, and they could have made him into a pretty credible midcarder if he kept up the "ARGH SAVAGE RUIN THE FACE RUIN THE FACE" thing. He just needed to come up with a cooler mask...
Hoping it's a work.
