View Full Version : It Never Should Have Gotten Over...

...But It Did.

Name some of the craziest, stupidest ideas that should never, ever have gotten over, but somehow did. I was mostly thinking of Hornswaggle/Little Bastard when I made this thread. Not since Dink has a midget been so over in WWE. And Dink jobs to LB.

Actually there was every reason to believe that Undertaker would get over. In the climate of the early 90s, it wasn't so outlandish. What surprises me to this day is the extent to which the gimmick STAYED over.

Definitely have to agree with whoever said "DAMN!", Head Cheese, Vito in a dress and Eugene...

I'm not surprised, per se, that "what?" got over.. it was entertaining. I just can't believe the EXTENT that it got over to, where people were chanting "what?" in segments and interviews that had nothing to do with Austin, and randomly Kurt Angle and Vince McMahon managed to become synonymous with "what?" even when they had no on-screen association with Austin whatsoever. Nowadays, it seems restricted to Austin once again, but the fact is that six years later, it is still over. That is amazing.

Trust me, we won't be hearing "DAMN!" in six years.

I like when someone goes really fast and fucks up the fans. Foley used to do the 3 turnbuckle smashes really fast and it was funny hearing the fans try to keep up.

Ladder matches make sense? Have you thought about it subjectively? There's a belt hanging from the ceiling and the only way to get to it is to use a ladder. I think 'Climbing for Dollars' from the Running Man makes more sense.

Xero
04-08-2007, 03:53 PM
How does having to climb up a ladder to reach something NOT make sense? It's a challenge after being beaten up for 15-20 minutes.

Sure, some of the logistics, like taking 10x as long to climb it as anyone else doesn't make much sense, but if you don't get the overall challenge in climbing a ladder after getting your ass kicked you're pretty stupid.

If anything, it makes just as much sense as using a chair as a weapon.

I think the chair became such a prevalent weapon because, in theory, there shouldn't be weapons just casually laying around a wrestling ring. Heels had to get creative to cheat, and there were ALWAYS chairs around, so badda bing, new weapon. I always thought it would be funny if they switched the seats around the ring to comfortable, cushy chairs. Or maybe even bean bag chairs. Would definitely change things up a bit.

Xero
04-08-2007, 03:57 PM

But why are there always stop signs, garbage cans and tables under the ring? I mean, I can see sledgehammers and a wrench, and even a chair, but those? They don't even pull out one of those tables to use when the announce table gets destroyed.

Undertaker is truly a phenomenal achievement. I can't believe that got over so huge and got taken so seriously, let alone reach the heights it has in 16 years. I think a lot of it can be attributed to the unique primal lure of something thats on paper so cheesy. But mainly thanks to Marc Colloway and the company understanding when and how to embelish and evolve the character over the years.
