View Full Version : Being a mark

I was reading Lance Storm's latest Q&A, someone asked about winning titles. He got on the defesive saying that winning titles isn't what makes a career successful, blah blah blah. He then said something about if you think titles make a career, you are a mark.
Why is being a mark such a bad thing? Honestly, imagine if ever wrestling fan was a snooty uppity smark. Wrestling wouldn't exist anymore.
Discuss.

Everyone who gives money to enjoy the wrestling product is a mark. Which means that even 99% of the smarts are marks as well.
Also, winning titles doesn't make a career (see: Piper) but it sure is a damn easy way of wrapping the career in a bow and saying it was a good run.

Also, I notice the people who say that the most often don't have titles, like Benoit or Storm. Kinda like ugly people saying it isn't how you look on the outside, it is how you are on the inside.

^ Nice. And true.
No, having lots of titles doesn't necessarily make a career but it certainly enhances it, and is probably what separates the truly great from the pretty good....
Truly Great - Ric Flair
Pretty Good - Lance Storm
To be fair, Benoit had a shitty run because of how they played off positions. He almost never got top PPV billing as champion.

And don't get me wrong, I still love Lance Storm but I don't agree with where he is coming from on this.

I enjoy hearing that titles don't mean shit when unquestionably Lance Storm's career highlight was when he was Triple Champion in WCW.

Yes but he also won it main event at WM 20 in a great match.
That alone counts for a lot.

Until WrestleMania 22, it also use to be a big deal that he made Triple H tap out in the Main Event.
And yet, while Benoit was holding the title, Triple H was always the main event, sans Benoit.

I can see why it happened that as Michaels/Hunter was so obviously the biggest feud of not only RAW at the time, but of the entire WWE year...but it also didn't help that they put over Benoit, but then the company kind of tossed Benoit back to the upper Midcard (with the World Title no less).
They should have just had Triple H retain or Michaels win if they knew which way they were going that early in.
At least that way the title would have been in the main event scene.

Yeah, but the interview I read was before his world title run. I wonder if his tune has changed any since then.
I think it's true that belts have a little too much weight in the smark community. Alot of people think a product will magically fix itself by putting the belt on -insertpopularsmarkwrestlerhere-
Unfortunately, one title switch doesn't fix a monopoly of shit.
