Which one is better? The original or the 1990 remake?
I bring this up because I just saw the remake today. I know most people will be like, of course the original, which is possibly the best horror film ever made. I am having a hard time deciding. This is one horror movie that was remade extremely well.
The remake's story is slightly better, I think, though it doesn't match the charm, atmosphere or social commentary of the original. I'd say they're about equal. The remake has a more satisfying ending, though I kind of like how the original ends on a real down note.

For me it's the remake.
The original is so bad it's funny. But obviously it wasn't bad when it come out, but when you compare it to the effects you can have now, the "dead body" at the top of the stars is .
Plus I found the end of the original to be uber anti-climatic. So meh.

Yeah, the dead body is pretty hilarious, now that you mention it.
The ending in the original isn't really anticlimatic, given the context of 1968. Powerful black man who is a leader struggles and triumphs over EXTREME adversity, then is gunned down. Shades of MLK or Malcolm X. The themes of the film are very 60s.

Original easily. Zombie movies wouldn't be same without it. But will agree remake is a decently good remake.

The original, far and away. The remake was well done, like you said, but I just have a thing for originals.

Out of all Living Dead series prefer Dawn of the Dead, off topic perhaps but just tossing it out there.

Now that I've had a day to reflect, I'm going to stick with the original. The remake was almost as good though.

Original but the remake is easily one of the best remakes out there.

The original. It pretty much created the modern zombie movie, and the remake pretty much takes the original and...well, tells the same story over again. If it weren't for the greatness of the original, the remake wouldn't have been able to serve up any of its own (which it does have).
I think the remake just owes too much to the original to really surpass it. It is success homage, though. It's kind of interesting that George Romero's films have inspired two successful remakes. I would say that has more to do with the simplicity of zombies than successful film-making, but Dawn of the Dead was pretty damn brilliant.

Day of the Dead is extremely underrated.
