not more than half of its fans knew it was a scripted sport? In the 90s not everyone knew it was scripted and it was more awkward seeing wrestlers breaking keyfabe. However, besides always hearing about rumors about who is going to go over, there has always been signs that its a scripted sport. Would wrestling have been better if the WWE would have kept us guessing and not sure of what to think?

No. There is simply nothing to be gained by the idea that it's unscripted. Plus, and I don't mean to sound insulting, I simply can not understand how any person to ever walk the earth could look at a single wrestling match in history (bar Nash/Backlund, since that's about how long fights like that would last) and not know that it's not "fake"/scripted sport.
C'mon, in the 90's everyone knew it was fake, it's so romanticised that people always believed. They didn't. And it has never mattered.

I think people would have figured out that something was up at Survivor Series '01 when Austin dropped HHH from a crane in his car and he turned up on Raw the next night with a band-aid on his head.
