View Full Version : "Smackdown" blamed for Virginia Tech tragedy?!?

In an AP story on Cho Seung-Hui, the student who perpetrated the massacre at Virginia Tech University, he was described as being a loner who spent time on his computer and watching TV, noting he watched Friday night wrestling. The article said, "He (roommate Karan Grewal) said Cho usually worked alone on his computer and watched TV, including Friday night wrestling. He was always alone _ in the dining hall, watching television, working out with weights in the gym. He rarely spoke to anyone." Also, MSNBC's 'Hardball with Chris Matthews' mentioned this fact on today's show.

What do you guys (and girls) think about "Friday night wrestling" be brought into this? I think it's completely ridiculous.

Just another thing for the media to blame.

As always I must ask did his enviroment create him or did he create his enviroment? I mean to say did he get the way he is because media and being a loner or did he choose to be a loner and voilent media such as video games and wrestling were something of an outlet.

Also, lets look a facts he is 23 year old male. Wrestling top demographic is males in their late teens and early twenties. He fits well.
He worked out alone, so do lots of guys his age. They work out when they can, and lifting wieghts isn't really a team sport.
He spent time alone on his computer and watching tv. Again that is common.
Eating lunch alone sucks, but we was wierd and sounded like a tard.

The fact that the AP story made a point to mention he watched wrestling makes it seem like they're blaming it on that. If the killer were not a grown man, I'd say *maybe* watching "Friday night wrestling" had something to do with it. But he was!

People are always looking for scapegoats. They never want to reflect upon themselves. It's always the video game industry, wrestling, a racy comic, whatever. It's never those in charge, whether they be parents or authority figures.

How much do you want to bet the PTC will try again to say that the WWE is responsible? They have hated them for years and I bet they want a good reason to say that they got "good nature" and a legal backing (remember they got caught lying about pulling of sponsorship LAST time they went after them) just to get back at them for all of that. This would be a real interesting opportunity.

Mercury Bullet

But, in unfortunate seriousness, music, movies, tv, and games all in general are going to get the blame once again.

Interesting how millions of people can listen to music, watch TV, and play games without killing somebody yet whenever there is an event like this we need to ban it all because it's the cause of all things evil in the world.

This fucked up guy's roomate is probably set for life if he plays his cards right. A quick book entitled, "the VA Tech Killer was my roomate" and just describe how this guy was as a roomate/the things he'd do. Instant $$$ and will never have to go to school again.

I'm not saying it would be entirely ethical to profit from 33 dead people... but I'm betting the demand would be there.

Probably worldn't be too ethical but it doesn't mean it won't happen. I suppose you get donate half your profits to a charity or something and you'd still be rolling in dough, plus you'd wash your hands of negative publicity for profiting off of tragedy.

I don't think anyone's dumb enough to blame wrestling of all things in this, anyone who does will be scoffed at even by non-fans and the biggest critics and mockers of wrestling. Simply because its so irrelevant and pretty much absurd.

I could see them relating it to violence. But that's about as far as it goes.

Now if the Pillman gun incident or the "Bang 3:16" incident were around now then they'd have more than that. It doesn't make it legitimately relevant, but it's more relevant than generic violence.

Jeritron
04-19-2007, 01:00 PM
Those two incidents are good points, but still yes I think anyone with a brain (fan or non-fan) won't take any kind of link or accusation of responsibility between a mass shooting and professional wrestling seriously.

You overestimate the mass of media and society.

There is very little, if any, link between pro wrestling...or video games...or movies, music, etc...and acts of violence. All those things are merely scapegoats to shift responsibility somewhere else.

Well, I remember...Stone Cold(?) firing a gun to drop a net on someone who got away from him, and on TNA last week I saw where “Brother Runt” (Spike in WWE) got “tasered” with 5,000 volts of electricity from LAX because they wanted to “show” Team 3-D how “comfortable” 5,000 volts feels compared with 10,000 in the electrified cage, but those are the only two incidents I can recall, seems like maybe when they did the Cryme Tyme training promos for weeks before they came on the air, CT waved guns around occasionally (most likely, if at all the stick-up scene...)
