People who know good music vote GnR, people who don't know what they're on about, vote Metallica. Unfortunately, it seems most people don't know what they're on about. ;)
Anyway, regardless of what this poll says, GnR made great music that will never be forgotten, Metallica have just been around for longer so people are more likely to vote for them based on that.

Dunno.. for all the old rock I used to listen to, the only songs I even remember by GnR are "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child of Mine", and the second is only because of Guitar Hero 2. But, I know I've listened to a lot more than that by GnR.
Not a very big impact if I can only remember 2 songs that they did.

The world is bigger than you and what you remember. I've got loads of stuff from them on youtube of their live performances, if you like that sort of music you'll like them. Check how many times comments such as 'best band in the world' come after the video. If songs can stay with someone after 15 years(like don't cry has..seen someone comment about that before on there) then thats a pretty big impact.

He's a huuuuge Metallica fan. One of the most overrated bands ever. Don't sweat him too much.
Seriously, you could put forth the argument that people only remember, say, "Enter Sandman" and "the Unforgiven." Or your choices work. People could cherry pick shit as much as they wanted. But it doesn't matter.
To be honest, GNR probably are overrated. outside this board, though, I don't know anyone who really likes them beyond a few songs, so I can't call them overrated from my specific experience. They've never been hyped, to me, as revolutionary or groundbreaking or "best ever."

I like music from that genre.. I also like those two songs that I mentioned. I don't, however, like anything else that they've done. The world is also bigger than you and what your favorite band in the world is, so obviously other people couldn't give two shits that you think GnR is the greatest band ever.
That's like me making a thread saying why Tool is better than "X" band, and expecting everyone to agree with me. I think Tool is one of the greatest bands ever, for their sheer musical talent and how they all work so well together in just (in my opinion) sounding amazing. Not their influence or whatever, but because I think they go perfect together. I think they are some of the most talented individuals in the music industry.
Does that mean I expect anyone to agree with me? No. In fact, I would expect quite a few people to disagree with me here. Now pull your panties out of your crack and go back to listening to what I consider mediocre music. :y:

I think Metallica is better. They have more memorable songs (at least for me)
Here goes in my opinion
Kill Em All - Debut, fairly good album, solid songs
Ride The Lightning
Master Of Puppets - Had very good songs, and one that consisted of a 8 minute guitar solo
...And justice for all - very good album, I liked very much, solid songs
Black -
Load -Metallica decides to take a shit on its fans
ReLoad - Just about pulls pants up, and realizes why not shit some more
Garage Inc - Wiped the shit off the fans face
S&M - Pissed on the fans
St Anger - Toilet backs up.
Ok, now for all the albums I shit on, a few have some Gems, St Anger has Dirty Window, for example.
As for GnR I really don't know much more then, Welcome to the Jungle, and Sweet Child of Mine. Guess I just didn't listen to them that much.

Metallica only did this after the concept had worked with several other notable artists. Specifically, Pink Floyd and Queen. In fact, the idea of a pop act tag teaming with a symphony is pretty old, but even specifically Kamen himself had done it before. Then there was the Boston Pops and Philharmonic, which have been doing the same idea. Metallica only signed on after it was a sure thing, and aknowledge they weren't doing something unique.
In other words, saying "Only Metallica could have pulled it off" is so intrinsically fucking stupid, it defies all reason or logic.

GNR was supposed to play in Vancouver a few years back (Axl no showed thus a riot broke out) but I didn't get tickets as I didn't want to go alone. Couldn't find a single person interested in the concert. All the same people I asked went to the Metallica concert (about 50/50 on close friends to just aquantences). Obviously not a scientific poll, but getting laughed at when asking if they wanted to go to GNR was kind of interesting.

That's down to your opinion though isn't it? Ok, lets say, they're the greatest live band ever instead if they didn't make enough albums, they certainly played enough gigs. Tbh, almost every song they make, I like, and they seem to match how i feel at the time just perfectly.
Requiem
05-03-2007, 06:05 PM
Being good live and being good on CD is a completely different thing. A lot of bands are complete SHIT live, but amazing on CD. Granted if I don't like a band after hearing a CD, odds are that I'm not going to like them live either, because I just plain don't like the music.
For instance, Guns N Roses.. I don't care for them. So my opinion probably wouldn't be changed if I saw them live, simply because I don't like the sound of the music, or his voice.

lol shut up. It doesn't show anything. It shows that this particular message board, in the small scheme of the internet, happens to have almost as many people who think GnR is better. It doesn't mean they are that good.. it means that many people simply don't like Metallica.
You're taking two basically bottom of the barrel bands (in this day and age) and putting them up against each other. If someone votes GnR here, or Metallica here, it doesn't mean that those are their favorite bands ever. It means they like one better over the other.
Londoner
05-06-2007, 06:55 PM
Ofcourse Requiem. You need to take your own advice. GnR were great for the short time they were around, just accept that just cause you don't think so, doesn't mean everyone else thinks the same way.

Yes. By saying, specifically, that the issue I had was the drummer and attitude.
Oh, and saying they were overrated. I mean, because saying true things instead of fellating them blindly is definitely a sign of hatred.
Requiem
05-06-2007, 07:37 PM
Nah, I just don't see you say anything good about them. Nothing comes to mind. I'm sure you've said good things before and you can probably find multiple posts about it, but I just haven't seen any so that was why I said that.
Kane Knight
05-06-2007, 09:28 PM
Actually, I doubt I've said many, if any positive things about Metallica. Normally because I only mention them when someone does something like pretend they're the best ever.
I don't hate them, but they're not in my top five, or top ten, or even top twenty. I don't even know if I'd rank them in the top 50. They're enjoyable, long as I don't hear them live. I mean, I was enough of a fan I bought "Live Shit" based merely on the fact that it was Metallica. Which disappointed me, and is the foundation of my assertion that Lars sucks as a drummer.
And he does.
On the other hand, not saying anything positive is a far cry from hating someone. In fact, if I hated them, I probably would just say "lol metallica sucks" and get on with it. :D
