Megadeth had a few good albums but were largely mediocre, I'd say Anthrax have managed to adapt best to more modern times, but Slayer at their best were just ripsnortlingly good, Metallica were great at times but have been awful since the black album.

I was listening to Rein in Blood the other day in the car and thought to myself "this has got to be one, if not the greatest metal album of all time."

All four have released at least one terrible album. If you ignore the terrible albums each has released, they rank like this:

Megadeth
Slayer
Metallica
Anthrax

Bring tha Noize is a mediocre venture from both Anthrax and Public Enemy. Both could (and did) do better.

A while back I bought the "War at the Warfield" DVD and a bottle of Captain Morgan's. I was in my room by myself the whole night, blacked out and woke up the next morning with a broken nose.

Sometimes "Slayer" just happens.

Ditch the War DVD and get Still Reigning. Much better, IMO.

Many of the songs sound better on the DVD than they do on the CD which is odd considering how old the guys are these days. Sadly, Angel of Death and Altar of Sacrifice are better on CD.

But I first heard South of Heaven and Spill The Blood on the DVD and man was I hyped. Then I got the CD and whatever the hell was wrong with Tom's voice just ruined it for me.

I'd say the Raining Blood on the DVD is also better in some areas than than the CD. I like how he screams "now I shall reign in blod" long and loud as opposed to the "rei-in-blu" you hear on the album.

But I digress.

Slayer
Megadeth
Metallica
Anthrax

First metal album I ever bought was Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? and the track remains my favorite to this day. I never got into Rust In Peace as much as I did Peace Sells.

My favorite album of these four is by far Seasons In The Abyss. You have one of their numerous legendary "Best Thrash Song Ever" qualifiers in War Ensemble but you also get their awesome slow songs like Dead Skin Mask and the track Seasons In The Abyss.

This is almost two decades after Megadeth's best albums, after their lead singer, songwriter and guitarist had a career-ending injury and with new bandmates?

One reason I love Slayer so much is the consistency.
Megadeth switched members too much for me.

Sorry, had to throw in some German Thrash. That and "Violent Revolution" is the shit.

Pete Cash

The german thrash groups tend to be better than the bay area thrash groups.

It is tough, metallica got me into metal in a big way and I still do like the first two albums a lot. I find MOP is a little overrated. If you take out the bad records it probably looks something like.

Slayer (although I don't think RIB aged all that well)
Megadeth (just)
Metallica
Anthrax.

Although I would almost argue that anthrax's best album has held up the best with time. I don't know it is a tough one because all four have released some crap. If you count all the crap than Anthrax probably goes into first because the other three released worse albums than sound of white noise and stomp 442. which shows how much crap the big four released. St anger, risk, diabolus in musica, good god those are some bad albums
