Earlier today, the British Board of Film Classification gave Manhunt 2 a thumbs down, banning it from sale in the UK due to its "unremitting bleakness" and "casual sadism." Now it appears the Entertainment Software Rating Board is ready to hand down its own most restrictive rating to the latest controversial offering from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games.

A Take-Two representative told GameSpot today that the ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO for Adults Only to Manhunt 2. While not an outright ban, the rating would severely limit a game's sales potential, as most major American retailers have chosen not to carry games rated AO.

As for the reason this is only an "initial" rating, when the ESRB rates a game, it notifies the publisher 30 days prior to publicly releasing its decision. This gives publishers unhappy with ratings the chance to either modify their games and resubmit them for a second assessment, or go before the ESRB's appeals board to challenge it directly.

"We believe the process of rating video games is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them," a Take-Two representative said. "Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."

While Take-Two doesn't agree with the idea of an AO-rated Manhunt 2, one parent watchdog group believes it's only appropriate. Earlier today, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood demanded that the ESRB give Manhunt 2 an AO rating, saying that "harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system."

The group's announcement contained a statement from Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, who explained, "The content of Manhunt 2 and the unique physical interaction with the Wii control combine to take [the game's simulation] a level closer to reality--we can expect that the effects of this experience will be even greater."

The group directed like-minded individuals to contact ESRB president Patricia Vance with their concerns, and Vance today issued her response.

"We have received the letter from CCFC and, while we might take issue with some of the statements made within, we sincerely appreciate their expressed concerns," Vance said. "Our ratings are intended to provide guidance that allows parents to choose games they deem suitable for their children, and that is a responsibility we take extremely seriously."

Manhunt 2 is currently slated for a July 10 release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Wii.

Maybe if these parents weren't busy bitching about everybody else not watching their kids, they could watch what the fuck their kids do.

I've played the first one, and to be honest, it probably deserves an adults only rating........ but the parents still need to actually pay attention to their kids.

If the game gets enough pressure I could easily see Nintendo dropping it.

The BBFC banning a game is extremely rare, the last (and only other) being Carmageddon, which was later allowed release on the Playstation. Rule of Rose also isn't available here, but that was a choice of the publisher. If anything, the BBFC has been lenient to games in the past, suggesting that they could actually be LESS immersive than movies, and allowing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to retain its 18 classification after the Hot Coffee incident, so this would lead me to believe that maybe Rockstar HAVE crossed a line of decency with this title. I haven't seen any gameplay footage of the game, so I can't decide that for myself.

However, I also worry that this has come about either because of the Wii controls (insert "kiddy" comment here), or because of the case of Stefan Pakeerah (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/3934277.stm), which could fuel a lot of controversy whenever a new "sick" game becomes known to the Daily Mail reading public. As long as this is an informed, well judged decision by the BBFC, and not a media-forced reaction to the first game, I'm fine with this, and I guess I can always look around other European countries to pick this up, hoping that the same restrictions aren't applied to Sadness and No More Heroes.

Another concern that isn't brought up much is this from the Nintendo website:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/images/icon_ao.gif AO (Adults Only) - should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.*

*Please note that Nintendo does not sell or license games that carry the ESRB rating "AO" (Adults Only).

So, this means that Rockstar may now be forced to change the game, for fear of being stuck with a Playstation 2 and PSP only game that can't be sold in a major country, and is practically banned from sale in another.

OF course they will. Aside from the Brits, who are going overboard, is anyone here affected?

any minors who were looking forward to it, hoping it was somehow rated Teen?

If it's rated A-O, though, then a lot less retailers would get it and even adults would have a hard time getting a hold of it (if they didn't know where to go for it, obviously).

Wow, even Sony isn't taking it. So pretty much Manhunt 2 will not be released at all, until they dumb it down.

Bad news just keeps coming for this game. Ireland also banned this also.

Unlikely. It's a sequel to a popular game, and like Wal-Mart with ther "family values," they will most likely buckle.

Remember, money talks.

Damn it...Ive Been reading on a few other sites about it

Because Sony and Nintendo refuse to publish this game as a AO rated game it leaves them with two options. 1. Appeal the ruling to the ratings board in a the hopes that they will chane there mind before the July 10th release date....2. Take some of the bad stuff out which probably means that the July 10th release date will be pushed back.

With our luck they will probably take the stuff out but do it in a way where when you cut a guys head off you see like a kitten pop up...kinda like on that X-Play show.

The difference is that this is actually a good game.

Thrill Kill eventually became a Wu Tang Clan fighting game. A very very awful Wu Tang Clan fighting game.

Well its official...

Manhunt 2 has been shelved

They are currently working on editing the game so the release date has been pushed back to a currently unknown date.

To be honest, if Rockstar hadn't thought this might happen they are fools, especially after the first one.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was intended.

Not disagreeing with WWKD though.
