So in the Circuit City ads for the week of July 15th, they've listed the 60GB PS3 for $499 which is rumored to tie in with a price drop announcement at E3 next week.
So FYI, if you were actually thinking about getting one the drop is coming really soon.

I wonder how much that'll be in Canada. Still too much. I understand what's in it, and that it's actually a really good deal, but still. All I want to do is play games.

Yeah. If you don't want a BRD, a media center, and a blender all in one, it's not worth the price.
Plus, the PS2 had issues if you used it as a DVD player, the 360 is said to have similar issues, and so you can TELL how unenthusiastic I am to shell out for something that could have the same problems for using it as intended.

I don't have a nice tv and already have a few dvd players, so I don't need BRD. But my blender broke a few weeks ago........
BRD isn't going to make any real difference to my and my generic brand tv (it's still really good for a 20-incher. Good sound too.)
I just want to play games. That's why I love the DS.

I have an HDTV, but no way am I paying a lot of money to play BRD, since I won't buy any HD until I have a combo player. Hi Def gaming is nice, but not really my first priority. And no way am I paying another 600 bucks just to upscale my DVDs. Gaming's great, but not at that price.

Slickness. I already have one, but this does mean whenever I decide to cash in my BestBuy protection warranty to get a new one within the next yearand a half, I'll get 100 bucks back.
Sony confirmed it today. They also announced that an 80GB PS3 will be coming out for $599 and will be bundled with MotorStorm.

It's on par with the Elite 360 package now, though rumors are already flying that Microsoft will be dropping all of their packages by $50 soon to compete with Sony's drop.
They are talking about a $100 price drop on the 360. But you're right. The elite is basically the same price without the next generation video player.

I'm also wondering if it might be because of the Wii's popularity (it's only 250, after all), and maybe they think it's the Wii's attractive price that is getting alot of good attention.
