View Full Version : Could Yokozuna work today?

Yokozuna's first heel run was fantastic. He won the 93 Rumble by eliminating Savage, beat Bret Hart at Wrestlemania IX (I won't mention that shit with Hogan, though he did later beat Hogan) beat babyface Tatanka, retained his title against Luger, and beat the Undertaker in his own match before finally turning the title back over to Bret Hart at Wrestlemania X. Rikishi may have been able to go down a similar road as a heel champion had he not done it for the Rock (although the crowded main event scene at the time probably wouldn't have permitted a run).

Is there a place for an unstoppable super heavy weight today? We have Khali and Umaga, but the times have changed. We have monthly PPVs instead of five a year, and at least five hours of tv programming a week to fill. Would such a character retain heat?

Umaga worked in January and March.... Umaga is the new Yokozuna I think, so yeah the gimmick works and Umaga needs to be IC Champion forever and face a world champion in a title v.s title match at WM 24. Umaga is god.

I think what happened with The Great Khali is pretty much exactly what would happen with a Yokozuna today. I'm not so sure Cena would be able to FU Yokozuna OR put him in the STFU, but he'd find a way.

I would suggest they put Umaga in a Sumo diaper and call him Yokozuna's cousin or something... but nobody would ever buy a Samoan as a Japanese Sumo wrestler. :shifty:

Umaga is pretty good, but I dunno, if he's really the new Yokozuna. Khali, I would say, is more of a modern day Yokozuna due to his astounding presence. Umaga is like a modern day Fatu with more talent.

Khali isn't working and I wouldn't consider Umaga a Super Heavyweight, though they act as though he is. The only "Super Heavyweight" (aside from the Hollys :shifty: ) who has really worked and gotten over in the past ten years or so is Big Show. Big Vis is a giant jobber and Henry (who is probably on that line) has wound up as a disaster.

Henry could totally make money for WWE, they just gotta put him on Raw.

I think people are far too used to impeccable athleticism from a lot of the roster to be entertained by a huge blob of crushing machine anymore. I think Khali and Mark Henry, while impressive in stature, have the most boring move sets on the planet.

I will say though, Yokozuna's offense definitely looked more believable. Especially when he stiffed that guy on the Bonzai Drop. Holy fucking mackinaw, that had to hurt.

He injures half the people he works with now. Don't put him on the brand where he could do the most damage...

Henry could go to Raw take out Orton, then take out Triple H literally he would injure him again thus WWE makes more money! Hahah success!

(you know within 4 months of Triple H on RAW you will want him DEAD)

I'd much rather have Triple H than Mark fucking Henry.

A Triple H title reign is looming. If he's taken out again we get at least 8 more months of Cena holding the title.

The money is in Cena chasing the title, not Cena holding the title at this point. People are tired of him holding the title. Take it off him, get him out of the title scene for a few months then begin a big title chase. It would likely get him more over.

Why not wait until Wrestlemania... it would be much more monumental.

Take the title off Cena at Survivor Series, Cena wins the Rumble and begins the Road to WrestleMania where he faces, and defeats, a heel Triple H.

It's the only thing left to do without them completely changing their booking philosophy.

Has anybody ever turned heel in the middle of a title reign? Just wondering.

HBK superkicked Yokozuna's ass that one time and Yoko got counted out. Just wanted to throw that out there.

To answer the question, if you bring a fat guy out on Raw next week who looks ready and able to destroy and has an offense that makes his size effective, the answer is this: easily.

Henry could totally make money for WWE, they just gotta wish him well in his future endevors.

Wow... a little harsh if not absolutely accurate there!

Agree with one of the first points though - Yoko was mainly over because of his size and the impact it created, quite literally - sadly nowadays that's nothing new.

Sorry Yoko!

It'd be kind of hard for Yokozuna to work today with him being dead and all.

Yoko got more moves and charisma than Khali and Umaga combined.
