Tool is perhaps the best band influenced by the Melvins, along with At the Drive In and Mars Volta (both of which have Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez)
Rush and Clutch are up there, and even then, they have the same issue: A singer whose voice takes some getting used to.
I have to go with Sabbath as best band ever, preferably fronted by Dio.
Rammsteinmad

The answer is Dream Theater.

I dunno about PF being better than DT, but they're up there as one of the greats.
Still, I'm wondering about the context of this thread. :?:

Dream Theater is like having sex for a really long time without being able to blow your load. They're mostly alot of meandering shit, doing whatever they can to prolong their songs way past it's point of relevancy.
Tool is good stuff though, but not the best.

Uhhhh.... no. Not only do I not like Tool but I just don't think they are any good.
I can not like band but respect their music, but that music is horrible.

Tool is progressive, and not for everyone. But you're an idiot if you don't think they are talented at all. I won't go as far as saying everyone in the band is the best ever at what they do, but I will stand by my words that Danny Carey is freaking amazing. And the rest are still very talented.

Agreed. I just don't see how that noise is pleasant. They have good songs that I like a bit, but they are the mainstream songs.

Dream Theater's more like "Not blowing your load prematurely for the sake of a hit single."

I'm assuming since he doesn't like "Noise" he's talking about the industrial and disonant devices, at which point, he probably won't like any Tool, no matter what.

While Dream Theater are probably the most superior band when it comes to musicianship, it is their weakness lyrically which stops them from being the best band ever.

I've listened to a few of their songs plus the whole of the Laterus CD (or whatever its called) it didn't really do much for me personally. I wouldn't say they aren't talented though.

Honestly, there is no way to make a definitive list of greatest bands. Music is far too subjective. What Zen, KK, and CSL said about radiohead, someone else may say about Led Zepplin. YES, there are people who hate led zepplin. They exist. Fuck, there are people who think 50 cent is the greatest rapper ever. And there is, in all honesty, nothing wrong with that.
I've always said that there is no such thing as bad taste in music. Just a different taste in music. Aren't you supposed to listen to music you enjoy? You don't listen to music for other people's sake, so if YOU enjoy it, how can it be a bad taste in music. Only way that is possible is if you willingly listen to music you hate. Which I'm pretty sure no one does.
Indifferent Clox
01-16-2008, 02:19 AM
I think bad taste in music is to listen to music with no artistic originality, when there are so many amazing bands out there with artistic talent.
That's just how I feel though.
I mean I listen to my share of bands that suck even in my opinion, in comparision to others (i.e. Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne stand nowhere near The Black Lips or The Sex Pistols, in punk but both those first bands are still very listenable at times)
too tired will continue this point later.

Tool is probably "better" than Dream Theater overall, but that really comes down to Dream Theater's singer being atrocious. He comes in and ruins all of their songs, whereas Maynard knows how to blend with the music perfectly. I don't listen to Tool very often anymore, but they are still a great band. I'd be willing to give them a greatest of the 90's award, but I don't know about going much farther with it.
As far as greatest band of all-time, the answer is simple: Sound Tribe Sector 9
