View Full Version : You'll never forget the name of.... *Inhale*
PLATINUM! *BITE*
Expect Dustin Rhodes to eventually morph into something along the lines of the Goldust persona without using the name. One potential ring name I've heard was "Platinum."

Lame. Lamer than lame.
Even lamer than that.
Just to show that TNA has no fucking clue what they're doing.
LOL, I just realized how the "I Still Remember" thing fits into the Goldust "You'll never forget" gimmick...

It's further proof that TNA isn't even willing to TRY to get a guy over without rehashing his WWE gimmick. That the closest thing WWE has to real competition can't come up with their own ideas. How is that not bad?

That's what I'm thinking. Instead of offering a true alternative, they just have watered down material that has already run its course and has a ridiculously stupid name that'll just constantly remind people what it used to be. A six sided ring alone isn't an alternative.

Why not have him just be Dustin Runnels, who's losing it becasue of the business and what not. Not some over the top charactor that TNA would have no way to get over.

If this happens I swear to god I'm going to kill someone.
If it's the exact same gimmick just with a different name and color what would it matter to a Goldust mark?

Would Ric Flair still be Ric Flair if his name was Haywood Jablome?
Would Stone Cold Steve Austin still be Stone Cold Steve Austin if he was The Ice Block Steve Williams?
Would The Rock really be The Rock if his ring name was Dwayne Johnson?
Would Hulkamania really have run wild if he was just Terry in a pair of yellow trunks?
No.
In "Romeo and Juliet" the question is asked "What is in a name?" Everything. The name is the root of who someone is.
If someone asks you who you are you're going to respond with your name, not with a short essay about yourself. You're going to say "I'm Xero Limit 126", not "I'm that one guy with a phantos avatar on tpww.net. My hobbies include long walks on the beach, doing chairty work for the homeless, and kicking kittens."
Maybe I'm looking too deep into this, but I think that name is needed for the persona to really work.
Goldust works with the Hollywood gimmick. The movie quotes, the wide screen intro, the music, everything fits with Goldust. TNA trying to rehash a persona that I mark out for just won't work.

My question is, why did he turn down coming back to WWE? Dustin Rhodes/Runnels/Golddust is fanstic in WWE, he never fails to entertain me. But outside of WWE, he sucks. Plus, he could come in with his dad and brother and make for interesting tv.

Hey goldy was always entertaining. I'd like to see TNA with the same costume but in silver just to stick it to wwe (as if they'd care)
I think it's more that WWE doesn't want him due to his recent troubles (no showing, etc).
OR
TNA have snapped him up cos WWE might have come a knocking somewhere down the line.

Rofl, the best one was when they did "The Scorpion King" and they showed the clip of how Booker T would have done it in the movie.

Maybe, but this is small potatoes in terms of that. When you've had vindictive little men make half-assed anti-Vince jokes, run your entire promotion with bitter castoffs who trash the competition, and most of your stars are established by the other guy, a cheap and derivative name isn't even worth the mention.
I used the analogy before, but it's roughly the equivalent of raping someone, then complaining about a jaywalker.

If they gave him the same gimmick and called him Platinum, could the WWE possibly sue them for copyright infringement? I mean, obviously he wouldn't be an exact copy, but in essence, wouldn't he be close enough to be construed as the same?

Well, WCW tried to give Ray Traylor the gimmick of "The Boss" which drew a lawsuit. Then they tried to give him the gimmick of "The Man." Same result.

I really don't think this is as bad as people are makng it out to be. Given a choice between Dustin Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes in a suit doing what makes him entertaining, I'll choose the suit every time. Sure, it may not be exactly Goldust, but I am confident that Dustin can make this as entertaining as possible.
I also agree with BDC. Goldust would have really made this program with Dusty and Cody interesting. I have been salivating for a normal son (Cody) vs. black sheep (Goldust) for some time.

I reckon we'll get Dustin back in WWE sooner or later. Imagine Dusty and Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton and Bob Orton.....with interference from Golddust. The Rhodes pick up the win, but Dusty and Cody are pissed off at Dustin for not letting them do it legitimately, which leads to a fued between Cody and Dustin.
That would actually be pretty awesome, I reckon.

Yes, but for some reason it's less likely that a wrestling persona will rsult in a successful character suit. Not to mention how limited recourse is. For example, There was a Captain America knockoff who was sued by Marvel, and it was determined that he was kosher--Providing he didn't throw his shield.

At least it's better than "The American Nightmare". I was kinda wanting him to sign with WWE and fued with Cody. I would've worked him as a face against the "better son" ,Cody, managed by Dusty. They could've made fun of Dustin for the Goldust gimmick and gotten him over. Wold've gotten Cody over too as a heel. Either that or switch it around and have Dustin be the jealous son that is starved for Dusty's attetion.
