View Full Version : I never, EVER thought WCW was better than WWF

I started out with WWF when I started watching wrestling, and then WCW came on right afterwards and I thought to myself "why did they change it to the bad wrestling?".

WWF even in 1997, 98, whenever they were being beaten in the raitings by WCW, WWF was so much better than WCW ever was. When WCW had the NWO storyline going strong (in 96) that was the only time I thought WCW at least equalled WWE. But especially 97, probably my favorite year for WWE product. In WCW you had clusterfuck after clusterfuck, people turning face and heel like it was nothing... while in WWE you had Bret Hart and Steve Austin tearing it up every night weather it was wrestling or promos. The Nation of Domination which was probably the best mid card stable WWE had ever come up with at that point. But most importantly, in early 97 you had the amazing feud of Undertaker and Mankind, which every match was gold. Also Triple H joining with HBK in late summer of 97 in one of my favorite matches of all time, HBK and Triple H vs Mankind and The Undertaker.

I can't think on one stellar WCW match in 97 that didn't involve Eddie Guerrero, Rey, Dean, Chris Benoit, or Jericho. And really the only one that sticks out is Eddie/Rey from Halloween Havoc. The on the good show you had, Austin Bret at WM 13 and then IYH, the whole Canadian Stampeade PPV, anytime Taker and Mankind fought, anytime Triple H and Mankind fought, anytime the Heart Foundation fought against Steve Austin, Austin/HBK 1, Austin/HBK vs LOD, LOD vs Owen and Bulldog, Taker vs HBK at Ground Zero and Badd Blood, Kane vs anyone was entertaining as hell, Owen/Austin 1 and 2...

I just don't see how anyone could have choosen WCW over WWF in 1997, fucking fantastic year for wrestling. And one of the best things about it was there were so many great matches on Raw for FREE! A lot of them I have already mentioned but how about Mic Foley vs Terry Funk, or Terry Funk vs Steve Austin on Shotgun Saturday Night?

Worship WWE in 1997 here.

I forgot to mention Vader/Bret/Austin/Taker from Final Four which I was at live!

I only started watching the WWE (part-time) during the Summer of 1997. I became a full-time fan shortly before Wrestlemania 14.

The reason I got into wrestling, was because of Stone Cold Steve Austin....and his feud with the Hart Foundation.

Bottom line - I was never really a fan during the peak of WCW/nWo. I can't really comment on WCW too much, because I never really watched them.

And the peak started in May.

I was always a WWF fan too. I'd watch the first hour of Nitro, but once Raw came on, I'd watch it all the way through, usually not even flipping during commercials. I also watched all of the WWF PPVs and hardly any of WCW's.

I was a WCW mark when I started in mid-1996 (a bit after the nWo came to be) then became a full-fledged WWF mark from about the Royal Rumble 1997-on. I still paid a bit of attention to WCW but I was a WWF guy from then on.

Shamefully I mised this period of wrestling completely.

I used to watch as a kid right up til some time in 95 then I stopped and watched absolutely nothing until 98 around the time of SummerSlam / Breakdown / Judgment Day.

I used to watch WCW back in 93 on Saturday afternoons on ITV. In fact back then WCW was the only free wrestling available, but stil I was a WWF mark. Always have been I guess.

WCW came off as sub par back then and I missed the heydays of the company 96 - 98. Even when I got back into wrestling I didn't watch WCW. Then they started showing Worldwide on Channel 5 around 2001/2002. By this time WCW was again sub par.

Ao to cut it short, WWE over WCW as a kid. WWF over WCW as a teenager. And I have to say currently, TNA over WWE as a 23 year old.

I've watched WWF/E for as long as I can remember. But also watched WCW when it was on. I'd flick over to it, but never watch it over WWF. I think I taped it once or twice. But never did i prefer it over WWF.

I started with WWF in 1993. Then started watching WCW when Chris Benoit appeared there. Was a WCW guy ever since. (Although I did still watch WWF, and ECW if I could).

Until 98, WCW TV had it's moments. Often in 95 and 96 it pissed over WWF TV. Their PPV's up until 1998 were miles better too with the exception of Canadian Stampede. People at the time said the WWF main events were in another league to WCW's but the undercards were very poor in comparison to WCW's.

I used to watch a bit of WCW but I grew up watching WWF so that was what I always watched. With that said WCW was never really as availible in the UK at that time as WWF was. WWF was on Sky Sports and Sky one every weekend.

The only reason I knew about WCW was because I left my TV on after Cartoon Network finished at 9pm.

TNT I knew about because that was what came on after Cartoon Network if I remember correctly, Bravo I had no idea about.

I watched NWA/WCW from 85 to its demise, and I thought they were better for most of that time. The Late 80s was good on both sides, I think WCW was better in the early 90s (even though both sucked HORRIBLY) and during the late 90s is when the WWE took the reigns.

would have loved to see WWF back in 1997, but didn't start to get into wrestling till 1998 when some friends convinced me to check it out.

Check out some of the matches I posted above, especially the Raw matches they really will show what what it was like. I know some are on youtube.

No way. WCW blew away anything WWF put on in 1995 and 1996, especially 1996. 95 and 96 were complete shit in WWF land. The WWF started to turn things around during Survivor Series 1996 and took off soon after.

I've always thought NWA/WCW was better then the WWF from 1990 until 2001. Never once did I like the WWF better, but then again I'm just a blind mark.

I have to disagree.

WWF in 1997 may have had good stars who eventually became major names in the company; Shawn Michaels, Triple H, The Rock, Stone Cold... but they also had a bevy of some of the worst gimmicks and wrestlers to fill up a ring in years. We're talking Chainz and 8-Ball, the Headbangers, Bob "Spark Plugg" Holly, Savio Vega, the Godwinns, "Double J" Jesse James. Even if there were highlights in guys like HBK, Hart, Diesel, Razor Ramon and Undertaker, the undercard was still filled with absolute shite. And it was for years. Not until WWF lost Hart, HBK, Hall and Nash did the era of Austin/Rock/DX begin. And by that time, WCW had already long lost it's footing.

On the other hand, WCW had the biggest names in wrestling that fans wanted to see back then: Hulk Hogan, Sting, Lex Luger, The Giant, Macho Man Randy Savage, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, the Steiners, and even Rowdy Roddy Piper. Even if they weren't the most athletically gifted main eventers in the world, they were the names that drew crowds, and they were a hot ticket for any wrestling promotion.

They also had one of the most solid undercards any company has ever had. They had a bevy of cruiserweights from Mexico (Mysterio, Guerrero, Guerrera, Kidman, etc). They had younger guys with tons to offer (the likes of Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Ultimo Dragon, Diamond Dallas Page, Buff Bagwell, Jeff Jarrett, Harlem Heat).

They had the Turner machine behind them, allowing them to produce top of the line videos and live television (something RAW could not offer at that time).

The card was packed from top to bottom with either the biggest stars pro-wrestling had to offer (Rock and Austin not being anywhere NEAR the stardom they would eventually achieve), or the best wrestlers and most entertaining athletes the sport had ever seen in the United States on a national level.

Any given Nitro circa 1997 > any given RAW circa 1997, easily.

Did WCW sell out the Alamodome? Seems to me their highest ticket that year was Starcade at the MCI Center, 25,000 tops.

I remember they bitched about WWF giving away tickets to the Royal Rumble in that building. They didn't mention that they also sold 48,000 tickets and that event alone was bigger than any WCW show that year and without checking, I might be bigger than any WCW show ever.

I was a WWF guy as I never got WCW on TV. Once we finally got TBS I'd get the Saturday afternoon show. I was always intrigued by WCW. It seemed a little on the badass side. Less cartoony I guess. But once TSN started showing Nitro I'd watch both all the way through as nitro aired on Tuesday. I found myself consistantly falling asleep during Nitro compared to Raw. Probably due to it being 3 hours long. They were different from each other so I liked them both.
