View Full Version : Why don't they just make Smackdown WCW?
They already use all the WCW titles. All they really would need to do is bring back Tony Schiavone and Norman Smiley.
If they are going to stick with the show divisions, they could at least put some sort of twist like that onto it.

I would like that better than the current situation. :y:

Why? It would still be SmackDOWN! with a different name.

They could mix the show up some, it could be refreshing at least.

It's an interesting thought. At the very least, it would help the still-moronic WWE Championship / World Heavyweight Championship dichotomy. It'd take some real work with all the branding and such, but you could then have the three promotions of WWE, ECW and WCW.
Not a bad idea, really. Not anywhere near as good as just ending the damned brand split, but definitely not a bad idea.

Perhaps a 5 sided ring then?

I prefer the 2 sided rings of Madagascar.

They should use no ring at all and just have it on the bare arena floor.

Make SmackDown the new WCW....
ARE YOU HIGH? That's the stupidest thing in the history of stupidness! When I was 10 years old I stuck an unfolded paperclip in a light socket and that wasn't a stupid as renaming SmackDown to WCW. When I was 8 I tried to pop the tires on the school bus and that wasn't as stupid as renaming SmackDown to WCW. A few years ago I called in sick for work and went there to pick up a gallon of milk in the middle of the day and got caught by my boss and that wasn't as stupid as renaming SmackDown to WCW!
Seriously, the WWE has a fanbase that only watches stuff that is labled as WWE. A fanbase that doesn't watch RoH, TNA, or even ECW. If they gave SmackDown the WCW logo and then called everything WCW titles the ratings, much like WCW post 2000, would suck.

I like the idea of making Smackdown WCW. With the titles that WCW had on there and they have several guys that were in WCW.

When the only really good thing to happen in WCW was a different set of three letters (nWo) than WCW's legacy doesn't have a lot let to ruin now does it?

So, you're suggesting that the title of the product dictates the level of quality of the product? That, if Smackdown, a "successful show" under the WWE banner, changed it's name to "WCW," it would "suck." That makes perfect sense if you ignore, you know, all forms of logic.
This was actually the original plan for the roster split back in 2001. The InVasion was supposed to lead to Linda taking Smackdown, turning it into WCW, and Vince keeping RAW as the WWF/E. The two sides would be kept completely separate, with interpromotional matches at PPVs. After the horrible Bagwell/Booker T fiasco on RAW, those plans were forever scrapped, although the roster split did eventually take place.
WCW still has drawing power as a name. For over a decade it was one of the leading brands in professional wrestling, and except for those too young to be there for it, the monday night wars were some of the finest nights in network television.
Personally, I would love to see Smackdown change over to WCW. Get rid of the horrendous Smackdown set and fist (which I never understood), replace it with the old WCW set (not the HUGE W-C-W that opened down the center, but the classic Nitro set with the "WCW" letters on the sides), call Smackdown "Nitro," and most importantly, KEEP THE BRANDS SEPARATE!
However, the idea is probably a long gone theory at best. Almost 8 years have passed since the death of WCW, and at this point, it's probbaly better left buried.

Personally I always thought the idea was sound. However from a business standpoint changing the name of a product isn't to smart. WWE/WWF is a more recognizable name. And to change a product name when it is successful is somewhat stupid. I mean even ECW is heavily advertised with WWE name in it.

Well, if it were re-named to WCW, then that would at least provide an excuse for it being incomprehensible garbage most of the time.

I think renaming it to WCW would be pretty cool. I'd be down for it. I have a big problem with two brands called Raw and Smackdown! But it may be a bit to late for a change now.

If they could do that, then maybe it would work. Despite all my bitching about the brand split the WWE is convinced that WWE is better with tri-branded PPVs... but that's another rant.
Now maybe I put too much thought into a name, but I would stop watching SmackDown if they changed the name to WCW. Hell, this new WCW could sign Chris Jericho and The Messiah and I still wouldn't watch. When I hear the letters "WCW" I think of a brand that had shitty booking, Hulk Hogan running the show, a clusterfuck of work shoots, Vince Russo screwing everything up, the worst play by play in the history of the industry, and too many titles on one show.
I think of a brand that died a slow, painful death. No, it wasn't all wrestling related. A lot of it was corprate bullshit that was beyond the grasp of anyone in the lockerroom.
For what ever reasons WCW went under I can't help but think of the last few years of WCW when I hear it. A total failure. It would be like someone's parents naming their child Adolf Hitler. While the kid has no real ties to Hitler, because of his name people will think bad things.

Heenan was awesome. Shavonne made me actually think that something big was happening every match, even if it was just Glacier beating some random jobber.

They could do it, but I can understand why some are against the idea. It is a bit of a pointless change, however it would make things a lot "neater," if you ask me.
This "illegitimate child" angle could be the catalyst for this change. Have Mr. Kennedy (or whoever the son turns out to be) get a whole bunch of money from Vince, which leaves him down a lot of cash. Vince is informed that to keep his status, he will need to sell a lot of his assets. Vince decides that he will sell the SmackDown! brand, and comes out on RAW and says that SmackDown! is no longer a WWE product, nor are the World Heavyweight Championship, United States Championship, SmackDown! Tag Team Championship or Cruiserweight Championship recognised by the WWE. Vince tells us that some SmackDown! talent will end up contracted to WWE RAW, and that we should not watch SmackDown! if we are loyal to his vision of the WWE.
Mr. Kennedy (or whoever the bastard child is) comes out and corrects Vince, and tells the fans that there is every reason to watch the CW Network on Friday nights, because a new and improved product will be in place of WWE's Friday Night SmackDown!, and you can catch Mr. Kennedy (or whoever the bastard child is) there. Vince is furious, but says good riddance, because this son has caused too many problems as it is.
Friday Night SmackDown! begins to open, but the intro cuts short (in a stylish sort of way, not just a jutty cut) and Eric Bischoff is in the ring. The former WCW President reveals that he purchased Friday Night SmackDown! from Vince, and that the show will go on. Bischoff says it is now time for "WCW SmackDown!." A new video then plays with a slightly remixed intro, featuring some of the stars from SmackDown!, and some WCW clips.
The show would continue on as kind of a Nitro/SmackDown! hybrid, with Eric Bischoff being the "President," with a roster comprised of SmackDown! guys bought out by Bischoff, and guys who leave the WWE for WCW. Some SmackDown! guys don't sign with Bischoff, and remain loyal to Vince, and make the jump to either RAW or ECW.
