View Full Version : Why Cena is still champ

-- As of last week, plans were in place for both Randy Orton and Batista to win their respective titles at SummerSlam. The final decision to let John Cena keep his belt was made on Friday. Michael Hayes is the person in charge of suggesting finishes for matches, but Vince didn't like any of the ideas he came up with. Vince thought that a win over Orton would have been the big perfect big win for Cena, so Cena got the nod in the match. Orton will get another title shot at Unforgiven, and there's a very good chance that he'll be getting the title this time around.
Good call Vince because that is what Cena needed, another big win.

Really though, he atleast coaxed me into buying SummerSlam at the belief that I thought Cena was dropping the title. Not that I wanted to see Orton win, because I didn't, he's one of the people where I'd rather the belt stay on Cena. But Cena losing isn't something we see everyday.

Yeh, Cena going over totally changed my perspective on shit. I love him now and can't wait to finalize my order for that new shirt he has out. I guess he just hadn't won enough before to get over with me.

Boone is prolly wrong on that Cena will lose at Unforgiven. Boone basically got every Summerslam prediction wrong except for the obvious Rey and HHH returns.

I'm not completely on the anyone but Cena boat, I would rather have Cena than Orton or Rey, but that isn't saying much. I was more commenting on the fact that a win over Orton for Cena isn't that big, as Cena has already beaten bigger stars and is a bigger star than Orton. Plus it is a little rediculous to think Cena needs another big win at this point.

My god I'm having visions of next years Wrestlemania.
It's probably good at this point, because Cena is selling on both ends of the spectrum. People are paying to cheer him and people are paying to see him lose. Never has anyone done it to the extent Cena is.

I would rather see Triple-H vs Cena II at WrestleMania 24.

So, Cena retained because they couldn't come up with a decent finish to the match? And here I thought they had a team of high paid writers to think up such things.

Why, so Cena can beat HHH at two non-consecutive Wrestlemainia?

Well, after all the successful title defenses he's going to look weak no matter what once he loses it.

Are people really paying to Cena lose? I think most people gave up and started tuning out.

Also, as much as I dislike John Cena, and have since his dreadful Best of Five series with Booker T, he was the much better choice to walk out Summerslam as WWE Champion. I don't want to go to much into how Randy Orton is a little cock, and rewarding him, not matter how tolerable he has been, is a shitty move, but there it is in summary. Cena is already the WWE Champion, so it's just staying the course having him go over Orton. Randy winning would have arguably been a worse track.
If we're talking Cena next to pretty much anyone else who has been in the WWE for over five years, or has some wrestling skill behind them, I gotta go with the anyone.
Are people really paying to Cena lose? I think most people gave up and started tuning out.
The amount of heat he gets at a lot of arenas proves that they're into it and suggests he's a draw for it.

Most of them did. I'm sure some people are paying to see him lose, as I'm sure some people actually tune in to watch Triple H, instead of the opposite.

I mean, they're gonna blow Taker's streak somehow anyway, so that won't bother me more than had they broken it with, say, Batista. On top of that, the stupid little Taker Marks will fucking riot.

well, that's when you pull outlandish finishes out. For example, Royal Rumble 94. It took about 8 guys for Yoko to beat Taker. That was an insane finish and was booked in a way for Taker to keep his momentum.

Mr. Nerfect

I'm actually thinking that the WWE might take the belt off Cena by having him take Randy Orton's "I'm a cunt punt" in the head, putting him on the "shelf," forcing him to relinquish the WWE Championship. Cue a tournament for the belt featuring Randy Orton, King Booker, Mr. Kennedy, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Carlito, Umaga and Jeff Hardy. John Cena can then take the time off for that second movie he was rumoured to be making.

And to be honest, while I dislike Cena, him ending The Undertaker's streak makes a lot of sense. It's the big kayfabe nudge to finally put him over the top as the biggest thing ever. John Cena is also undefeated at WrestleMania, so if they absorb The Undertaker's streak into his, John Cena would become quite the credible force at WrestleMania.
John Cena should be an unbeatable heel who just wins all the time. That way when he does win, and the place has an orgasm, it will be so much sweeter.

Probably, though in Cena's case, I think he's making a fresh new batch of folks that hate him every few months.
There appears to be a correlation between ratings increases and boos. While I know there's no direct correlation between sales of tickets and ratings, the two effect each other, and it seems that when the ratings go back up, more people start to boo....

The really horrible part about all of this, is that Cena is actually much better than whats been seen in the last few years. He's not really a brawler, he's actually a technical wrestler, and he really can be a lot less lame on the mic. His stuff from smackdown, from when he first debuted the rapper gimmick was awesome. Even when they were turning him face, he still had that chip on his shoulder, and by getting rid of that and making him a full on babyface, it ruined the character. There is no doubt in my mind that if they would have kept that austin-like anti hero persona, and allowed him to delve into his technical skills a little more, that Cena would be a hit withmarks and internet fans alike. Maybe even, dare I say, the next stonecold or rock.

If Cena has to wrestle in the match then he's going to look bad. Unless you think that punching, stomping, and five moves makes a wrestler look good.

I totally agree. Cena should be up there as a egend. A real legend, not just the "Whatever we have on heand we push as great" type in five years. Cena's no Benoit in terms of ring skill, but he can work a match, and his earlier matches make me think he does actually understand psychology.
I had really hoped that the poor reaction Cena was getting would send a message to WWE. It would be so easy to have him reboot, especially against the McMAhons. But they don't seem to get it.

And when I was talking with some of my buddies after Summerslam, we decided that Cena did not overcome the odds, he is the odds. Since no one can beat Cena, nobody can overcome the odds.

Yeah, I've noticed a similar thing, only I noticed it in reverse. As ratings go down, the boos disappear. I figured it as people finally getting fed up and just not watching. The boos are apparently back, as the fans have been behind Randy Orton, so that goes with your ratings theory.
And John Cena can wrestle when he needs to. You and Fignuts are right. I remember in his early days everyone used to admit he had a lot of wrestling talent, he just had no personality. How the times have changed. Although, I'd still argue that Cena has no personality. If they let John Cena wrestle his way, and talk his way, he would not be nearly as bad as he is.

His personality definitely sucks.
It's amazing how Cena can only play to a small audience. When ratings get near the three and a half mark, he starts to get "Controversial" again.
I miss Cena as a guy who looked like he gave 110% in a match, and whose (admittedly lame) freestyles were over with like 99% of the crowd.

I really hate John Cena's current theme. I mean, honestly, I think it may be a large part of why I am so annoyed by him every time he comes out. That and the way he "plays" to the crowd by stomping about and flailing around like a retard.
If he went back to "Basic Thuganomics" and walked out calmly like he used to, he would set a much better tone for himself.
