MortalKombat Online recently investigated the current status of the much rumored "Mortal Kombat 3" and fans won't be happy with the outcome. First up, New Line head honcho Bob Shaye whose company released the first two films indicated they won't be involved in the third film - "We no longer have any subsequent rights".
Screenwriter and all round legend Drew McWeeny says "I have no idea if the film will be made or not. At one point, it was a priority for Threshhold Entertainment, and that was before MK: DA became a hit or MKVI was released. That said, MK: DA was a hit, and if our film resembles any of the source material in particular, it's that game. I'd say there's a good chance they're still planning to make it, especially since it sounds like they have worked out all their previous problems.
When I worked on it, it went through many different names. MK3 was always the working title we went back to. I don't think they've decided yet what they want to call it....Word is, they're untangling those rights now finally and plan to move forward with the film. I seriously doubt we'll be doing any further work on it at this point, and I'm not sure what script they'll finally put in front of the camera"

With the new MK game on its way, just thought I'd pass this info along in case anyone was wondering about it.
