lol there is a reason why nobody can pull off a good Nirvana cover, you're missing the soul.

Anyways they're a very difficult band to cover. You cant take away the voice of Kurt and replace it with another, nobody ever does them justice.

It's like he managed to write songs that would only sound good performed by himself.

Tori Amos tried hard though.

This was very cringe-worthy though. Another batch of kids that were probably about two years old when the man died.

They were selling on par with Pearl Jam and other "Grunge Acts" before Cobain's death, and despite all the claims, their sales are actually not all that impressive. It seems like blowing his brains out was the best thing he could do.

Which really goes back to the fact that people are "hating" on Nirvana because they're an ass band. People aren't ripping other popular acts, are they?

KK you need to stop. Calling them shit is like trying to say Arod is a shit ball player..or that Gretzky was shit at his sport.

You dont have to be a technical wizard who can play every note to make good music. In fact, it usually works the opposite way.

And dont even deny it. If Nirvana werent so hyped by everyone, including the very men who inspired Kurt to play, guys like Buzz and Thurtson etc..you'd all be able to accept the fact thet yes, they did indeed change the face of music, they did indeed have a huge impact, in a positive way, and they did indeed write some grade A material.

btw, Nirvana can do other bands songs better then they can. Nirvana covering a band is immense. Another band covering Nirvana is usually shit.

What's your point? They sold 7 million copies of Nevermind before he blew his brains out. They sold 3 million of In Utero, and were even back then, BEFORE his death, being hailed as one of the great bands that only come by once every generation and shit. Pearl Jam deserved their massive success as well, they were a damn good band.
Death sells for everyone and anyone, to a point. Aaliyah sold some records after her death, got some hype...so did the dude from Sublime. Hell, Layne was a damn good artists but death didnt exactly do much for him and his former band.

The fact is this: If your music stands up to the hype, which in Nirvana's case it does, and quite a few other late artists, then your music will still be revered, and it will still matter, thus it'll still sell. That's fucking obvious.

If your music doesnt exactly stand up, then your death can only do so much for you. You'll have that momentary time where sales and hype will follow quite freely, but it'll start to sputter.

The great artists never die, they never go away. The music will always be there.

KingofOldSchool
09-20-2007, 06:21 PM
The difference between Layne and Kurt is that Kurt killed himself during the peak of the "grunge" movement. That raised his stock ten fold, Layne died many years after the fact so no one gave a damn.

Now if Eddie was stupid enough to blow his brains out back then and not Kurt, the roles would've been switched. Why? Because the timing was such that either lead singer would've been put up in the spotlight.

Ed kills himself, Pearl Jam gets immortalized.

Kurt lives and Nirvana would probably still be around, they would release more albums, but it wouldn't sell. However, they would still be a huge live band.

Zen v.W.o.
09-20-2007, 06:42 PM
I dont see it entirely that way.

The thing about Pearl Jam is they very intentioanlly did all they could to erase themselves from any of the mainstream spotlight they were previously under.
Pearl Jam still sells relatively well for a band that does shit all besides tour.(no vids, generally little press, etc).

Would Nirvana have done the same? I dont think so entirely. They WERE already doing certain things to alienate their audience. In Utero and Incestiside are evidence of that fact..they were alienating those they saw jumping on their wagon mainly because of Nevermind. They even joked about reducing their audience to about half after the release of In Utero. I think they were trying to weed certain types of people out. Like you enjoy our band for our ability to write a good melody/poprock track, how about when we go back to writing somgs we grew up playing and loving. That already set off some fans.
After that I dont see Kurt as being the guy who would have stuck around doing one thing for very long, had he lived. I saw Nirvana breaking off perhaps a few years later. And I think they would have called it quits while Nirvana still mattered in the mainstream. Thus their epicity would have still been maintained, even though their was no death.

Even still death or no death, if your music plain sucked you wouldnt get the reverence that they do, it would have eventually faded. People would come down from their worshipping clouds and see the band for what they were, if they werent great.

Death didnt make Sublime any better than they really were, despite his death coming at a peak period of time for his band. The reason why was because in life, they didnt already propel themselves into that category, where Nirvana happened to be well ebfore the time of Kurt's passing. The point is they were already where you guys are claiming they go to be, because of death, but in reality it was while they were still alive and kicking.

They did pretty well before he died, fellows..

No one is debating their success before his death, but if you look at it their success grew beyond belief once Kurt blew his brains out.

Wait I take it back...Kurt's popularity skyrocketed. The music industry and the media in general treat Kurt like he is some music martyr. His death was at the height of the whole "grunge" movement, Pearl Jam and Nirvana were the two biggest bands in the country. They were neck and neck in popularity and album sales, not to mention the media hyped up a major feud between the two bands, specifically between Eddie and Kurt. Most of it was fueled by Courtney Love, because she HATED Eddie with a passion. In fact they RESPECTED each other, hell Dave Grohl has performed with Pearl Jam a few times over the years.

So when Kurt killed himself, he immediately got put up on a pedistal as some rock legend. And what did he do to deserve it? Kill himself?

Posting on here certainly helps.

But if I could be serious for a moment, it's not so much that I think I am superior, as that I am often let down by how completely and utterly stupid some of you can be. Stickman is a great example. And it's usually the same lot that says things like "What makes you think your (sic) so smart?"

Zen is another good example. Fuck, between Zen, Stickman and one other Canuck, I think we can pretty much disprove the notion that Canadians are better educated than Americans. They're dumber than fucking Texans, man.

KooSH/Zenny: K, you're welcome. The only thing is, I've said it before, on TPWW, ad nauseum. Other places, too. The Zens don't get it. He can retrofit the truth, but counting comparable albums, sales were comparable to the other big "grunge" acts pre-suicide. I mean, with PJ, they were virtually neck in neck according to the record certs. They only slightly led the other guys. Using their sales, as Zen has done, is fucking pointless. They sold well, in a boom period for music, where that genre alone had four phenomenal sellers, where like a dozen groups were being hailed as that "once in a generation" act. You know, like this generation has thirty bands who are the "saviors of rock and roll." I've even demosntrated a lot of this in the past, using real numbers and figures. I hate re-doing research because someone's too slow to get it the first time though, so I'll deal in abstracts.

But we're talking about a time period where Michael Bolton went 6XMultiplatinum. We're talking about a time where Enya and that other "Ambiance chick" Each were doing 2-3X per record. Garth Brooks. At least 9X. And then there's their own peers...Doing pretty good for themselves.

Hmmm...

And no, Zenny, death cements you. Cobain did the smarted thing he could for his legacy.

EDIT: And you know what makes me think I know so much? While Zenny (And maybe you, Jordan) was fapping to MTV (Whatever the shity Canadian equivalent is) coverage of Nirvana and buying into the hype, I was paying attention to the rest of the media. I picked up a shitload of information on a lot of subjects throughout my life. Information. You know, knowledge.

KK you just wrote a bunch of words and based it as fact, yet it's just what you want to think.

PJ and Nirvana were light years ahead of the other acts in their genre. Make no mistake. Album sales btw are not the be all and end all of success, or of quality. In both cases however, their hype and success financially were well deserved.
For instance, Soundgarden didnt have an album reach 2 million is sales until 94, and we all know what year that was notable for. Nirvana by that time were already huge for two years. AIC had Dirt which got a lot of play, and was very well recieved, but it was not a hot seller in the same vein of Nevermind or Ten. To this day it's only sold about 4.5 million copies in america. Nothing to scoff at, but that is their top seller. And on a worldwide basis, with merchandise and tour revenue coming into play, the gap among the PJ and Nirvana camps and all the others is even wider.
"Nirvana-mania" was a fact and it was huge. Kurts death alone didnt just propel his status for a little while, but it aided the entire movement. Every fucking grunge act got a boost at around the time of his passing. Say what you will but he was the epicentre of the genre.
You can also say his death basically killed the movement. There would not have been another band there to hold the same power over Nirvana and their fortunes or futures.

This thing about death making him a martyr I can totally agree with. But that DOES NOT take away from the band and what they managed to do. It really doesnt, and you can try to spin it so that it looks like you are making some spot on valid points against the basic truth, but it's without merit.

But basically G was the guy I was getting after. He not only gets the reason why Nirvana were popular wrong, but he then goes on to make a presumption about the future of Nirvana and label it as a fact. lolz.
