I don't know how I feel about Nigel McGuinness becoming the ROH World Champion. Actually, I realise now that I quite like it, I just hope that we get Austin Aries as the first-ever two-time ROH World Champion very soon. I'm hoping that is the purpose of his program with Bryan Danielson now.

I'd also like to comment on Jigsaw being in The Vulture Squad. A lot of people around the place have been saying that he doesn't fit, but on the contrary, I think it is a really solid move. I was personally leaning towards the third member being Ricky Reyes, but this way allows Jigsaw to become more than just an enhancement guy in ROH. Eddie Kingston seems to be a popular choice for a third member of TVS, but I think that would make the group too similar to BLKOUT. If Kingston came in, and was a part of a stable, I'd much rather he be a part of some new one (although ROH has too many stables as it is), with Nigel McGuinness and Claudio Castagnoli, with the purpose of feuding against Sweet 'N' Sour Incorporated. Just thought I'd throw my Jigsaw support out there. Oh, and someone in ROH needs to yell out "JIGGA what?!?" at least once.

But yeah, the company seems to be building towards Nigel McGuinness vs. Bryan Danielson or Austin Aries. I like Danielson and all, but he's just been ROH World Champion. Right now, Austin Aries feels fresher and more exciting to me. I'm really hoping we get Nigel McGuinness vs. Austin Aries, with Aries going over, and cutting Nigel's reign a little short, yeah, but you can't have every guy running a marathon with the World Title.

I would just like to point out Chris Hero is awesome. I guarantee that by next year he will be RoH champion. Jigsaw is a perfect fit for the VS. Also if they bring Kingston in I think he would fit best in a loner type role.

Chris Hero is indeed pretty awesome. I'm not as big on him as some, and neither is Gabe, apparently. I am liking his rivalry with Claudio Castagnoli, and as much as I prefer Claudio, and think it is great that he's finally getting his due, I think Chris Hero should be getting a few more nods in this program than he seems to be. This just screams a "heel dominates via shenanigans until the face makes the heroic improvement needed to get the feel good victory."

I don't know why, but a Claudio Castagnoli & Eddie Kingston vs. Chris Hero & Larry Sweeney match would really capture my attention. Have Kingston come in, and develop a bit of a hatred for Larry Sweeney, maybe with Tank Toland being Kingston's first opponent, as he works his way up the roster. Keep him officially a loner, but then have Claudio's program with Hero, and Eddie's program with Larry come together in an epic tag match.

Give ROH a break...

I mean,

TNA stole AJ Styles, Alex Shelley, Amazing Red, Chris Sabin, Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, Hernandez, Homicide, Jay Lethal, Low Ki, Michael Shane, Samoa Joe...

The WWE stole Brian Kendrick, CM Punk, Colt Cabana, Jamie Noble, Jimmy Wang Yang, Paul London...

Now that's he's ROH World Champion, I'd love to see Nigel McGuinness develop a bit of an ego. Have him come out with the ROH World Championship and the ROH Pure Championship belts, even though the later Championship is defunct. Nigel works really well as a cocky prick, in my opinion. You don't need to turn him heel, but it's good character development.

Nigel McGuinness' ROH World Title win will apparently air on PPV on January 8, so I guess his reign will last at least that long, probably longer. So there goes my short reign theory.

Yeah, Nigel isn't my favorite guy, but he's solid, and he definately deserves it. I too don't really wanna see him hold it for too long, but we'll just see what happens. He might step up huge in 08. I agree he should lose it to Aries. He's the best guy now in ROH. I love Dragon, but he's kinda plain looking, and Aries has a little more charisma and would be fresher as champ. Who knows, maybe Claudio will step up and do something. 2007 was a year of change and transition for ROH. Now with all the pieces falling into place, 2008 looks to be pretty awesome.

I'm indifferent to the title change. On one hand, Morishima's lost the title and I was never high on him. On the other, Nigel's won the belt and while he's better than great, I don't think he should be holding it.

Jimmy Jacobs for ROH champion Woooooooooo

Mr. Monday Morning

- I never want to see Ricky Reyes again. He's fucking awful.

- Jigsaw deserves a shot, he's a pretty good athlete and remarkably good face for a masked guy

- CHRIS IS AWESOME *clap clap clap clap clap*

- Claudio takes the title, WM weekend

- Necro vs the Briscoes is off the charts great

Alienoid you really should check out the last year or so of Chikara if you want Hero/Claudio/Sweeney/Kingston stuff. I don't think they've ever had a tag like you outlined but they all do arguably their best work there.

It is kinda weird how ROH seems to have an awesome year, then kind of quiet/middling, then back to awesome. 2004 & 2006 were phenomenal years, 2005 & so far 2007 have been kinda meh.

That Claudio prediction is actually really likely. You might be right on with it. :y:

CHIKARA was what inspired my idea of a Claudio & Kingston vs. Hero & Sweeney feud, actually. I've been trying to track some of it down, though, because as familiar as I am with it, I haven't actually seen too much out of CHIKARA.

This year has really been a year of change and adjustment for ROH. They've had to make some new stars to replace some departing ones, and they've done a fairly decent job. Plus there has been the move to PPV. I think ROH is its own worst enemy in a way, because every star they've really help create (CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Austin Aries, etc.) wants to move on to more money, and more fame, so they leave the company, and there is a vacuum to plug. ROH has managed to survive because they hang their hat on a style and a philosophy, rather than just a single wrestler, in my opinion. They're getting really good at adapting, and using what they have available to them.

Are you on PWTorrents? Their stuff crops up there from time to time, most of the past couple years have been on there at one time or another. They're good for the most recent PWG releases as well, which are worth checking out for various reasons.

Guess a bad commercial.

I just realised that my only gripe with Nigel winning was that I wanted to see Austin Aries become the first two-time ROH World Champion. It took me a few seconds to realise that Aries can still be that guy. I'm going to credit that to ROH building up Morishima as the man to beat in an effective manner.

With Bryan Danielson having the Driven PPV victory over Nigel McGuinness, they can probably make a case for him getting a title shot. Austin Aries should win this Best of Three Series, and Takeshi Morishima should get a rematch. There are three big defences for McGuinness over the coming weeks. Also have Doug Williams come back and get a shot from his partner, and you have a pretty solid start for McGuinness' title reign.

We beat Australia in some egg chasing game and now a Brit has a decent title in the US.

I probably would have gone had I known that it was in Edison a few weeks ago. Wouldn't have gone out of my way for a regular taping but a PPV taping would have made me make more of an effort to go.

Well I did want to go because I haven't caught any of their events yet, but didn't because I had family visiting from California that night. However, had I known it was a PPV (something that never crossed my mind as I don't think much of my town), I would have told them to wait outside for me to get back.

Pretty much...this is the second Edison event I heard of and didn't know till last minute.

The first one I found out about when I showed up at a computer show, and found out they were running a show next door. Didn't even know it was ROH till I peaked in and saw the ring apron.

JT
10-07-2007, 02:49 PM
I did know about the one yesterday because of a commercial on ECW, but they never said PPV. Just that ROH was coming back to Edison.

It's sad every other 2 bit promotion has announcements of events plastered in every store front in this area, but ROH can't even get more than one commercial out for a PPV events on Sci-Fi.

I just really jope Nigel goes back and inserts some of his old pure title style into his matches, because I'm getting sick of his lariats.... He really needs to use his rebound lariat more sparringly, because tryin to insert it into every match is making it old real quick. Like when Jimmy Rave speared him, and he rebounded from the ropes and his the lariat, that was bleh. When Marufuji superkicked him and he rebounded and took off Morishima's head, it was awesome.

So here's the question... How many champions before we see Jimmy Jacobs with the belt. Looking at the roster, there's a lot of eligible champions, especially since there's only one belt. Right now, I could see Chris Hero, Claudio Castignollia, Austin Aries, Bryan Danielson, or Jimmy Jacobs legitimately having a shot at winning the belt in the future. Plus Roderick Strong, and probably Eric Stevens, or Davey Richards in the distant future.

Plus, ROH is going to start using Quack more it looks like, which will be a good thing.

And on a totally different note, I think the Briscoes are going to split in the near future. They've been built as a damn near unbeatable team. I think eventually a team (Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black being the most likely right now) will finally top them, causing the Briscoes to go their own way and pursue single careers. Although part of me has the sneaking suspicion that Jay may end of joining AotF.

Apparently the RoH marketing sucks.

I don't like taking shots at ROH for the sake of it, but a large part of their PPV promotion takes place on their website. I feel like slapping them and letting them know that people who are on their website are probably already aware of the PPV, and are probably going to buy it without their shitty reminders.

Well, things could completely change by January next year. This Age of the Fall thing could really make Jimmy Jacobs a big name, or it could flounder horribly and Jacobs will need a few months to get his awesome back on track.

Claudio Castagnoli seems like a good pick for the next Champion, although I personally wish it was Austin Aries. I'm still going as Aries' second reign being the 11th ROH World Title reign, and that Jacobs is the guy to beat Aries. So, with McGuinness likely being ROH World Champion for a long time, I don't know if it will happen anytime soon.

An idea I read regarding The Briscoes and AotF, was that Jacobs' crew would brainwash Mark Briscoe, and turn him against Jay. It seems very sports entertainmenty, but for some reason, I'd buy it.

Mr. Monday Morning
10-08-2007, 07:33 AM
Jimmy needs to stay healthy and have a run of about 6 months before he gets anywhere near the title. If he can put a good program together with the Briscoes that will help a lot.

10-08-2007, 08:22 AM
ROH does have shitty marketing. No doubt about it. I don't recall ever seeing any non-internet advertising for Detroit shows. I mean, WWE (and ECW in the past) draw decently enough down in TOledo, and Detroit is only an hour away, yet no advertising takes place. Hell, a lot of the fans would be willing to schill the product if they were given sampler DVDs or fliers to give out.

Mr. Monday Morning
10-08-2007, 10:14 AM
Something that only just occurred to me this afternoon, and having double-checked the results page on the official site it appears to be true - Claudio and AmDrag have never met in an ROH ring. Weird huh? You could quite easily have those two battle for the #1 contendership while Aries challenges Nigel.

Either way. Also, people need to quit whining about TNA and WWE stealing RoH talent. They are bigger, so talent is going to move up when they can. RoH is a feeder the way ECW was a feeder for WWF and WCW. Get over it people. And be happy your local hero has made it up to the bigs. It is like bitching when a college basketball player gets drafted to the NBA. Did you honestly think they would stay they forever?

What Would Kevin Do?
10-09-2007, 02:29 AM
I don't care that WWE or TNA sign ROH talent... I just care when they're horrible misused. Matt Sydal, I have a feeling, will be one of them. The guy is essentially a pure cruiserweight, and WWE has no lightweight division. I don't understand why they would sign someone, when they're probaby just going to limit most of what they do. I mean, in Sydal's case, he won't be able to do the SSP, The top rope Belly to Belly moonsault, or the "Here it is" driver.

IF anything, they'll have him use his legdrop reverse DDT esque move ( imagine Big Show's Hog Log, but actually efficient.) I don't understand the logic of "let's hire someone, then change everything about him because he doesn't fit our image"
