View Full Version : So they canceled the NLL season

I'm not sure if anyone here is a LAX fan, but I've bought season tickets the past 3 years to the Sting because they're a good team and the games are always fun. They've made it to the finals 2 of the past 3 years and there are more and more fans at each game.

But then the players association can't reach an agreement and the entire season is canceled. Apparently, the players didn't even to get to vote on it.

Sucks too because this sport was rising like crazy. They've had like 5 expansion teams in the past 4 years. Oh well.

This is the worst thing that could happen to Professional lacrosse and I wouldn't be suprised next season if teams have folded and the remaining teams only get 4000 fans out. The league is not mainstream enough to be cancelled for a year. They will not come back like the NHL with the "new" nll. It's a shame really as the players are all great guys but they don't make enough $$ playing pro to support a family or relocate. Anybody who ever watches a game would be entertained I garuantee that. Sadly, this league is doomed.

One of our bosse's family friend's sons plays in the NLL. I've met him and he's a real stand up guy. He made less than 50k a year playing, lots of travel, but he really had a passion for it. Sad to hear this.

I may have met that guy. I actually played with and against a lot of guys in the NLL. I played Junior A for 3 years, was drafted by the New Westminster Salmonbellies but knew I wouldn't make it, ended up playing "B" with a couple guys who were in the NLL but with work didn't want to play "A". Last year I tried out for an A team that was full of NLLers but didn't make it (I swear it has less to do with talent than it has to do with your name or who you know, especially when you're a goalie). Like I said, lacrosse players are great guys and it's a shame this league is being cancelled for the year.

BTW, I believe the average league salary is $13,000 US. The "franchise" players only make about $24K a year. A rookie probably makes about 7-8k

I was talking to another tech who knows him as well, I'm off on my salary post. I think he's getting @ 30k. That seems to be what I heard today. They fly him from PG to Calgary for each game, meals, hotel, so they $$ must be a little better than you think, Sticky.

Any sponsorships or other deals are not part of the salary. Little quirks such as free flight, hotel and meals add up. It's like any pro athlete, there's money besides the basic salary. Some players get room and board. Ran into one guy I played Junior with who plays for Colorado and since he didn't have a job that he couldn't leave from he moved down there with free room and board and works for the team. He said to do an appearance at a school or something he'd get $100. A few appearances a week is the norm.

If the money was better than I'm telling you, guys wouldn't have to work a real job.

Season saved

I heard this AM that they signed a 7 year agreement. Fuck yeah.

Thank God. Had it been cancelled it would have folded just like in the 70's when they cancelled one year and never returned until 20 years later.
